Read<strong>in</strong>g the Old Testament from a Nigerian<br />

Background: A Woman’s Perspective<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

In spite of the fast development be<strong>in</strong>g experienced <strong>in</strong> most sectors of life <strong>in</strong><br />

Nigeria and an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the number of women educated <strong>in</strong> various walks of life,<br />

the situation of women with respect to literacy still needs improvement. This is<br />

reflected <strong>in</strong> different approaches of Nigerian women to the Old Testament. This<br />

essay studies Nigerian women’s understand<strong>in</strong>g of the Old Testament and their<br />

varied responses to it, particularly how their socio-cultural background determ<strong>in</strong>es<br />

their <strong>in</strong>ternalisation of the Sacred Scripture. Sources utilised <strong>in</strong> this contribution are<br />

tripartite: literary works by some women, questionnaires, and personal <strong>in</strong>teractions<br />

with women from various Nigerian tribes and Christian communities. Besides<br />

stat<strong>in</strong>g their ages, Christian denom<strong>in</strong>ations, tribes and academic qualifications, the<br />

women <strong>in</strong>terviewed were requested to express their personal views on the Old<br />

Testament and how the Sacred Texts affect their lives as women. The results of this<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigation are presented <strong>in</strong> five <strong>in</strong>terrelated steps, which form the next five<br />

sections of this article:<br />

• Nigerian women readers of the Old Testament;<br />

• Levels of mean<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• Social background of the readers;<br />

• The readers’ social background with respect to the Old Testament;<br />

• The readers’ wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g responses.<br />

WOMEN READERS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT<br />

In this context the phrase “women readers of the Old Testament” stands for the<br />

extensive groups of women who have access to the Bible and whose levels of<br />

literacy and social backgrounds condition their approaches to the Sacred Texts.<br />

They are Christian women who belong to different tribes and to numerous Christian<br />

communities <strong>in</strong> the country. One can dist<strong>in</strong>guish at least three large groups of<br />

women readers.<br />

There are <strong>in</strong> the first place those Christian women who, as a result of their<br />

limited level of formal education, have access to the texts of the Old Testament<br />

only by listen<strong>in</strong>g to read<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> their religious services. These read<strong>in</strong>gs are often <strong>in</strong><br />
