Reflections on the result of the Novi Sad Implementation Lab

We had the great pleasure to organize and conduct this workshop in Novi Sad, as one in a series of
implementation laboratories that enhance the quality of urban development in the cities of the Danube region.
Developmental concepts for the areas of the Chinese district, Fisherman’s and Kamenica island prove previous
urban solutions, proposed by the PE for Urban Planning during the last few decades, largely successful.
Fisherman’s and Kamenica island developmental proposals in particular conform to the existing planning
documents, as it has recently been confirmed in four case studies of sustainable development conducted by the
PE for Urban Planning.
New developmental solutions for the Chinese district area are particularly interesting. Existing facilities and the
relative proximity of the University complex indicate further development potential. Our current problem is the lack
of space to meet growing needs of the University of Novi Sad. Therefore, the proposed Chinese district
developmental solution should provide incentives for entrepreneurs, especially those from the IT sector which is
poised for continued growth in our city.
The implementation of the proposed area development is of great importance. For us, it represents the most
important result of this workshop. Serbian legislation is currently being harmonized to the legal framework of the
European Union. However, we have not yet had the opportunity to put this sort of urban development into
practice.
This workshop is a confirmation of our success and the ideas proposed here challenge us to continue the dynamic
development of Novi Sad.
