The diversity of the bazaar or web city would be analogous to the web and the ability to move from one space to the next analogous to surfing the web. Drawing on principles taken from good design elsewhere the group expressed the following ideas in visual form. 1. At the wider strategic level, it is important to ensure that there are links created with the ‘regional level’ green space and smaller green spaces in Kista. The potential to create a link between Kista and nearby water bodies should be explored. 2. To create more green space within Kista a north south pedestrian boulevard was identified. This could include water elements (eg. a swimming pool and an ice rink) and would link existing vestiges of green space. The plaza at the end of the boulevard could be created by building over the existing surface car parking and creating parking underground. 3. Bring water into the town, through creating water features, building a canal to channel water from existing water courses. 4. Exploit the sense of place that is given to a town by the town walls and gates. There is a potential to utilize some of the physical and natural boundaries around KISTA and to see these as metaphorical city walls. This led to the idea of marking the gates in some way, providing an indication to the visitor that they are entering KISTA. This could be done by using lighting or other design features, thus creating distinctive landmarks. 5. Design key components in a manner which reflect the local climate. This is exemplified by the idea of building a glasshouse/greenhouse in the existing greenspace beside the motorway. This glasshouse could perform a number of key functions. A glasshouse feature built in the vicinity of the motorway, could act as a landmark, identifying KISTA from the motorway. It would act as a wonderful indoor facility during the winter months and would be a fantastic resource for both residents and workers in KISTA and Helenelund. It would also create a potential link between KISTA and Helenelund. MILUnet Stockholm Kista Workshop Report 38
PROCESS The process should have the following steps: 1. Vision in headlines: - Open up the grid - Website City - Grid Bazaar Innovative design The grid is a stimulating disaster! 2. Survey: It is very important to involve all stakeholders, so check the wishes of: - Big companies like Ericsson - Users/Shoppers - Inhabitants (do not forget the immigrant communities!) - Workers - Students 3. Organize conferences starting with a small party of stakeholders, who are very committed to the projects, and only later a big party 4. Create Plan + regulations (a so-called mainframe of clear procedures and rules) for the public/private space. Establish project organisation (=Stockholm) 5. Have an interactive process - Exchange of ideas - Create Win/Win situations - Work from Small – medium – large - Envelopes (investor, tasks, responsibilities) 6.
