Nippert-Eng Plays
Role in Thomas
Gray Installation
Christena Nippert-Eng,
associate professor of sociology,
appeared in and helped
to coordinate interviews for
the installation by Londonbased
Thomas Gray in the
Zaha Hadid Chicago Pavilion,
which opened in Millennium
Park in August to
mark the 100th anniversary
of the Burnham Plan.
The pavilion, called the “Zpod”
and praised as “a virtuoso
display of structure, space and
light” by the Chicago Tribune,
was only temporary and was
torn down November 1.
Every evening at dusk, the
pavilion ran Gray’s installation,
called “Chicago Past,
Present and Future.” The seven
and a half minute, beautiful
multimedia production
included collages of striking
images, sounds of the city,
and spoken musings about
the future of Chicago.
Blair Kamin of the Chicago
Tribune said of its importance
to the pavilion, “The
[Gray] installation, which
evocatively conveys sounds
and images of Burnham’s
Chicago as well as visions
for tomorrow’s metropolis, is
crucial to cluing in parkgoers
that this is a pavilion with a
purpose, not a mere folly.”
Nippert-Eng said that
she got connected to Gray
through a friend, the architect
and designer Paul Bluestone.
Gray came to her office at IIT
and discussed the project; she
offered her help. Ultimately,
that turned out to include
helping him get interviews
with children at the Chicago
Lab School, where her
children go to school; being
his “assistant for the day” for
those interviews; and being
interviewed herself. “[He
wanted] a sociologist’s view on
The Zaha Hadid Chicago Pavilion in Millennium Park,
featuring Thomas Gray’s multimedia installation.
the distant future of our city to
go along with that of all those
architects and planners he
talked to,” Nippert-Eng said.
