International Law Moot
Court Competition
The Jessup Competition is a legal advocacy contest
in which teams of students write briefs and present oral
arguments before a simulated International Court of
Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United
Nations. The Competition was created in 1959 when a
dedicated group of students and professors at Harvard
Law School organized the first “International Law
Moot,” which later was named after the eminent scholar
and jurist Philip C. Jessup, who served on the ICJ from
1961 to 1970.
Today, the Jessup Competition is the world’s largest
moot court competition, with participants from over 550
law schools in more than 80 countries. The Competition
begins in September with the release of the Compromis,
a fact pattern describing a fictional legal dispute between
two countries. Teams of students work together
to research the legal issues raised in the Compromis,
and then write legal briefs and prepare oral arguments
on behalf of each party to the case.
More than a competition, the Jessup is a professional
training experience which teaches practical skills in
research, writing, advocacy, and teamwork. The Jessup
has also served as a source of inspiration to many
generations of students in promoting the rule of law and
the peaceful resolution of disputes. Several countries
have fielded successful Jessup teams even while their
countries were in the midst of violent conflict or internal
political strife.
One of the most unique features of the Jessup Competition
is its cultivation of a global community of legal
professionals who have shared and continue to share an
invaluable cultural and academic exchange. Former
Jessup participants can be found in the world’s finest
law firms, universities, governments, and international
organizations. They are today’s leaders in international
law, and they continue to support the Jessup as administrators,
volunteer judges, and team coaches.

Structure of the Jessup Competition
The Jessup Competition is divided into two levels:
qualifying tournaments and the international rounds.
At both levels, teams compete in head-to-head matches
before a panel of judges and advance based on the
quality of their oral arguments and written pleadings.
A national qualifying tournament must be held if two
or more schools in the same country register for the
Jessup Competition. The winners of qualifying tournaments
earn the right to advance to the international
level of the Competition, called the White & Case
International Rounds.
National and Regional Rounds. As the number
of participating schools continues to rise, so does
the size and impact of qualifying tournaments called
National and Regional Rounds. Each competition has
its own unique structure and rules, depending on the
size of the Competition, the academic calendar, the
local mooting culture, and other local factors. In some
countries, such as the U.S. and India, the number of
teams participating is so large that the qualifying level
of the Competition is broken up into multiple regional
rounds instead of a single national tournament.
White & Case International Rounds. Sponsored by
the global law firm of White & Case, the international
rounds are a week-long cultural and educational event
held every spring in Washington, D.C. in conjunction
with the annual meeting of ILSA’s sister organization,
the American Society of International Law. Participating
teams argue their case before leading practitioners
and scholars of international law, vying for the
coveted White & Case Jessup Cup and the title of
Jessup World Champion. The final round bench has
consistently included the most prestigious names in
international law, most notable among them former
and current ICJ Presidents such as Judges Schwebel,
Owada, and Higgins.
An essential quality of any good lawyer is the ability
to prepare and present the best legal case available to
their client. Mooting is an excellent way of developing
that ability and the Jessup has the extra-values of
emphasizing the wider world in which all lawyers
operate (or should) and of providing great opportunities
for meeting law students from other cultures.

Jessup Participants and Alumni
Each year, students from more than 550 law schools in over 80 countries participate in the Jessup Competition. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe,
these students are the best and brightest young legal minds from their law schools and countries. The Jessup experience instills students
with a valuable advantage in the global marketplace by exposing them to complex, timely issues of international concern. Moreover, students
develop strong teamwork, legal research, and oral and written advocacy skills by representing both sides of the case from start to finish in a
rigorous and competitive environment. Jessup alumni commonly refer to the Competition as their most challenging and rewarding law school
experience, and often point to the Jessup as the academic exercise that best prepared them to work in the international legal arena. It is no
surprise then that many former Jessup competitors are now leaders in law, business, and goverment in instituions around the world.
Each of the 550 Jessup teams that compete each year are composed of two to five students from the same academic institution. More than 125
of these teams advance from the National and Regional Rounds of the Competition to the International Rounds held in Washington, D.C. As the
world’s largest and most expansive gathering of law students, the Jessup International Rounds give many participants their first exposure to
student and attorney counterparts from other countries. Through spirited debate and socializing, Jessup competitors come to view their peers
from around the world as allies, partners, and friends. Relationships between competitors remian strong even after the Competition has ended,
and the “Friends of the Jessup” network of former competitors--thousands of individuals from around world--continue to support the Jessup
year after year as volunteer coaches, judges and mentors to the next generation of international lawyers.

in the Jessup during at least one of the last three years, 2008-2010. Note that approximately 550 student teams are formed each year,

The Jessup Competition in the News
Because the Competition is among the largest, oldest and most rigorous international contests, achievement among a field of over 80 nations
yields substantial news coverage and a sense of national pride. Each year, national television stations attend the International Rounds of the
Competition to film the team(s) from their country arguing in the World Championship Rounds, and broadcast the footage back home. Numerous
local news agencies also cover the National and Regional competitions held around the world.
The magazine articles reprinted on the following pages represent just a fraction of the overall news-media coverage the Jessup Competition
and its competitors receive each year. They are stories of successful Jessup teams who return home after the International Rounds to great fanfare,
meeting with high-ranking court and government officials, even heads of state, and stories of how the Jessup Competition brings together
students in all parts of the world, with the end goal of uniting them as champions of the rule of law.
The Jessup Competition remains the preeminent, worldwide
moot court competition, which has proved its worth
as a teaching tool of remarkable utility. It not only teaches
the substance and procedures of international law. It
teaches that there is more than one way of looking at
issues of international law. And in the process, it not only
hones the forensic skills of its participants, it contributes
to the international understanding and fellowship in
significant measure.

The Jessup Competition is one place where the rubber
hits the road—that is, where law students finally get to
see whether they can apply law to fact and emerge with
a coherent (though not always winning) argument.
The competition also makes international law—which
tends to be viewed in the abstract—a bit more real.
For these reasons, those students lucky enough to
participate in the Jessup are likely to be better lawyers,
and not only just better international lawyers.
