our goal is balance. By reducing middlemen and having a near vertical operation we can

We developed the Feather Weight Coverall specifically for the oil and gas industry 

and designed it to keep workers cool and comfortable. The Feather Weight is 

lightweight, non-abrasive, and breathable; a coverall you actually don’t mind 

wearing in warm weather. Benchmark’s FR 5.5 oz. Twill is made from combed cotton 

ring spun yarns, which yields a durable yet lightweight material. Our fabric is nonallergenic, 

skin safe, and will not react with sweat while working.

Crossover 

The Crossover Coverall is a medium weight coverall which meets the HRC 2 

requirement for electrical workers and also is compliant to NFPA 2112-2012. 

It crosses over between the electrical field and oil & gas… one coverall for 

both threats. 

Arc-Rated 

Until recently, clothing worn to protect against flash 

fire (boom) or arc flash (zap), were both referred to as 

flame resistant clothing. The 2012 Edition of NFPA 70E 

is introducing a new term called “arc-rated” to further 

define the materials used to protect against arc flash. 

Materials that are used to protect against electrical 

discharge must be flame resistant and also must carry 

an arc-rating. To achieve an arc rating the material needs 

to have been tested for exposure to electrical arc. All 

Benchmark FR products carry an arc-rating noted as a 

number followed by “cal/cm 2 ,” to represent the ATPV or 

Ebt of the product.

Burn Injury Prediction 

This illustration is the result of an instrumented mannequin test used to predict 

the percentage of body burn a wearer could theoretically receive during a three 

second flash fire. According to NFPA 2112, 50% body burn is the threshold between 

passing and failing. 

Our Standard Coverall received a 7.38% total body burn with 6.56% of that being 

the unprotected head. Only one sensor, covered by the fabric, registered a 2nd 

degree burn representing .82% of the mannequin surface.

Temperature & Productivity 

High temperatures affect several human responses including comfort, perceived 

air quality and work performance according to a study at the Lawrence Berkeley 

National Laboratory. It was determined, in a controlled-environment experiment, 

that the ideal temperature for working is 72 degrees. As the temperature increases 

comfort and productivity go down. Studies indicate that work performance 

decreases by 2% for every 1.3º Fahrenheit rise in temperature. 

We designed 2nd Skin as the 

coolest and lightest product 

we could make and continue 

to exceed flame resistant 

performance requirements. 

While 2nd Skin can be an 

excellent layer in the winter, 

its most appreciated in hot 

environments as an effective 

tool to help combat the heat. 

2nd Skin is a blend of inherently 

flame resistant fibers and 

natural cotton fibers. This 

blend helps regulate body temperature and offers consistent flame resistant 

performance. The blend of fibers also serves a third purpose; some fibers wick 

moisture, others spread the moisture creating a larger area for evaporation to keep 

the wearer dry. It is also important to note that 2nd Skin has excellent static electric 

decay capabilities.

We re-engineered the fleece fabric to have a minimal amount of 

shrinkage (less than 4%) , excellent colorfastness, and increased tensile 

strength. The weight was reduced to feel more like a “store bought” 

garment. Industrial laundering will not affect the FR properties of this 

product but is not recommended because it may cause premature wear.

Breathable Two Layer System 

Added Protection From Layering. 

The Bomber Jacket is lined, rather than insulated, which makes 

it ideal for wearing in above freezing temperatures. Multiple 

layers of flame resistant material will trap insulating air 

and offer a greater thermal performance than a single 

heavy layer. 

Example: When tested as individual layers the shell 

receives an ATPV rating of 13.2 cal/cm 2 and the 

lining receives a 6.3 cal/cm 2 . When simply added 

together these ratings total 19.5 cal/cm 2 . 

When these materials were layered and tested 

together the overall system received a 32 cal/cm 2 . 

That is more than a 64% increase in the arc thermal 

performance value. Below is a graphical representation

individuals today want to be sure that protective garments not only provide the 

required protection, but are also safe to wear. With this goal, we have voluntarily 

adopted the most stringent applicable international health codes, monitoring levels 

of toxicity and allergens in flame resistant garments.* 

Benchmark FR is unique because our treatment process yields a fabric that is safe 

to wear directly against the skin and also non-allergenic. In other brands, direct 

contact with the skin or bodily secretions can leach or dissolve textile finishing 

products. At Benchmark, our core process and technology chemically bonds a 

flame retardant to the cotton’s cellulose fiber so that it becomes an integral part of 

the cotton’s structure; it is not a simple surface “coating.” 

Benchmark’s FR does not contain any heavy metals or halogens. The end result is 

a superior flame resistant fiber which will not react with saliva or sweat**, nor pose 

any other secondary threat to human health. With regard to bodily contact, there is 

virtually no difference between Benchmark FR cotton and untreated cotton.

We have recently verified the formaldehyde levels for some of the cotton and cotton/ 

nylon blended flame resistant fabrics on the market today. When tested according 

to AATCC 112 typical samples range from 631 to 900 ppm of free formaldehyde. 

Imported fabrics had higher levels than domestic brands. To put this into perspective, 

at concentrations of less than 1 ppm in air, formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, may 

cause headaches, a burning sensation in the throat, and difficulty breathing, and can 

trigger or aggravate asthma symptoms. It is a known carcinogen. 

If you believe you have a flame resistant garment which has high levels of 

formaldehyde contact us and we will test it for free at an independent lab.

Benchmark’s fabrics conform to the Oeko-Tex 100 and the Japanese Law 112, which are the most 

stringent international standards currently gauging toxicity and formaldehyde content in flame 

resistant garments. 

In both indirect and direct contact dermatological tests for saliva and sweat interaction performed by 

the Food and Drug Research Laboratory, the University of California’s San Francisco Medical Center, 

and SGS Laboratories, no evidence of harmful or irritant reactions was shown. These tests conclude 

that there is no mutenegenic behavior, no immunotoxicity and no cytotoxicity predicted for users of 

Benchmark FR products.

Four important things to know about flame resistant garments: 

1. They will not completely prevent injury; rather they prevent the extent of the injury. 

2. FR is considered a “secondary” personal protection equipment, just like a hard hat or 

steel toe boots, they are a last line of defense. 

3. Threats range from temperatures that are 4x the heat required to broil a steak (flash 

fire) to electrical threats generating heat with more than 4x the surface temperature of 

the sun (arc flash).

You Want to Wear 

Fit Matters 

Fabric Comfort 

All Benchmark flame resistant garments contain premium natural fibers for increased 

protection and comfort. Yarn construction is a critical part of what makes a fabric 

feel soft and comfortable to wear. A unique part of our process includes long staple, 

combed natural fibers which are formed into ring spun yarns. When woven together 

into fabric, ring spun yarns yield durable fabric with a smooth feel. Benchmark fabrics 

range from 100% Benchmark FR cotton to blends which incorporate modified acrylic, 

anti-static and aramid fibers. 

Combed Fibers 

Our combing process separates up to 80% 

of the longer, more desirable fibers from the 

shorter fibers, naturally found in raw cotton. 

Fit Matters 

More than any other singe variable, fit determines the comfort of your flame resistant 

garments. Think about it: you could have the thinnest, softest, most natural feeling 

material, but if a shirt is two sizes too small it is not comfortable. 

When Benchmark designs and manufacturers a garment we pay 

careful attention to fit. This means our clothing’s fit is based 

entirely on what is comfortable to wear and not what is the most 

economical to construct. 

During an informal survey of safety professionals 

almost 9 out of 10 people said that non-compliance with 

personal protective equipment is still an issue in their 

workplace. Poor wearability was the number one reason 

why workers failed to wear PPE. Benchmark FR takes the 

excuses away. 


Ring Spun 

Once combed the long staple fibers are 

tightly twisted together which results 

in a strong, cable-like yarn. Ring spun 

yarns ultimately yield a smoother, more 

durable fabric. 

Blended 

Depending on the desired thermal 

protection and comfort we will design 

and construct a fabric with both natural 

and inherently FR fibers. All materials 

are blended so the fabric properties are 

consistent and retain the desired properties 

of natural materials. 

When exposed to an ignition source such as flames, severe heat or an electric arc, 

Benchmark FR fabrics will react to protect the wearer by self-extinguishing within 

moments after the ignition source has been removed. It is this rapid reaction that 

can save the wearer’s life and limit the extent of an injury. Benchmark FR fabrics will 

not melt or drip in the presence of heat. If our simple care instructions are followed 

the flame resistant properties will remain effective for the life of the garment, 

regardless of the number of washing and wearing cycles. See page 45 for complete

In a comparison between a Benchmark Long Sleeve 

Shirt ( # 1004FR) versus a similar button-up style shirt 

from a leading flame resistant brand, we found 

many areas where the other brands’ fit was smaller.

Fabric is the single most expensive cost in 

manufacturing a flame resistant garment. Many 

manufacturers try to remain competitive by changing 

the fit of their garment so they use less material. This 

often results in a poor fitting garment.

As a policy Benchmark will not change or make 

additions to a garment in such a way that it will 

make the garment unsafe. This includes but is 

not limited to large embroideries or patches, 

flammable reflective tapes or altering a 

garment in any way that permanently exposes 

the arms or legs. 

Benchmark FR garments will remain flame resistant for the life of the garment 

provided they are cared for properly. Our wash instructions are simple and mostly 

require that you leave out extra chemicals during the laundering process. 

Important 

• Remove and clean clothing if soiled with 

contaminants or flammable material. All 

materials influencing flammability must be 

completely washed off the garment. 

Option A: Home Wash 

This is the preferred method for cleaning your 

flame resistant garments because even the most 

vigorous home wash will keep your garments 

looking better than an industrial wash service. 

This is because there are less garments being 

washed at once; hence less abrasion. 

Do: 

• Set washing machine on cotton cycle. 

• Warm or normal temperature setting 

(140° F) 

• Laundry detergent (i.e: Tide ® or All ® ) 

• Tumble dry medium heat. 

Don’t: 

• Do not use bleach whether separate or 

contained within the detergent. 

• Do not use hydrogen peroxide or 

oxygenating agents (Oxy Clean ® ). 

• Do not use lye based, or home 

made soaps. 

• Do not use fabric softeners. 

• Do not use starch. 

Option B: Dry Cleaning 

While all Benchmark products can be dry 

cleaned, it is the favored method for washing 

Benchmark insulated garments such as parka’s 

and bibs. 

• The dry cleaning solvents should be clean. 

• Solvent systems are safe. 

• Solvent systems charged with water and 

detergents are safe. 

• Wash Benchmark garments once every 

six months regardless of use, to remove 

soiling and to maintain peak flame 

resistant properties. (ASTM F2757 & 

ASTM F1449) 

Option C: The Industrial or 

Commercial Wash 

You must notify your laundry service that they 

are washing a flame resistant product. Flame 

resistant garments are designed to react to 

heat and it is important the laundry service 

knows to follow the wash instructions which 

are embroidered/sewn inside the back of every 

Benchmark garment. 

• Wash soiled Benchmark flame resistant 

garments separately. Flush, break, carry 

over and rinse with water not exceeding 

165° Fahrenheit. 

• Lower temperatures for lightly soiled 

garments are recommended for increased 

garment life and maximum color retention. 

• Adequately rinse garments to remove 

detergents and residues. 

• Garments should have a pH of 7 or should 

be slightly alkaline. 

• Do not use sour or acid rinsing agents as 

last step. 

• Adequate rinsing to achieve dilution 

and a neutral to slightly alkaline pH should 

be used. 

• Do not use bleach whether separate or 

contained within the detergent. 

• Do not use lye based, tallow or homemade 

soaps. 

• Benchmark FR garments can be dried using 

typical methods for cotton, however avoid 

over-drying. 

• Typical cotton pressing techniques can be 

used, however avoid finishing and pressing 

with open steam. 

• Do not use starch.

CAUTION: With the exception of product 3002 (Hard Hat Liner - non FR) all garments in this catalog are constructed from flame 

resistant fabrics which will resist ignition and will not continue to burn when the ignition source is removed. These garments are 

designed for continuous wear as secondary personal protection equipment and meet the requirements of NFPA 70e, ASTM 1506 

and OSHA 1910.269. These garments are not intended to protect the wearer from physical trauma or burns in the immediate areas 

of ignition. When worn alone these garments are not intended for fire entry. Remove garment if soiled with flammable material. 

Benchmark flame resistant garments must be correctly matched to the risk or threat the wearer may encounter. Benchmark flame 

resistant garments will remain flame resistant for the life of the garment, provided they are cared for properly. See page 45 for 

detailed wash instructions. 



Three Seconds... 

This sequence shows Benchmark’s Standard Coverall exposed 

to simulated flash fire on an instrumented thermal mannequin. 

This simulation is a burn test that lasts for three seconds. These 

images were captured on a high speed camera.

Where the Benchmark Standard Coverall 

covered the mannequin’s sensors there were no 

3rd degree body burns and less than 1% of a 

predicted 2nd degree body burn. Visit our website
