RESOURCES
Industry Leading Expertise
With a resource base and scope of operations
second to none, Imperial Oil’s Resources
Division is positioned to continue as a leader in
the development of the three areas that
represent the future of Canada’s petroleum
industry – the Alberta oil sands, the East Coast
and the Far North.
Imperial Oil continues to be a major producer of
conventional oil and gas from properties in BC,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest
Territories. These properties represent a large
share of our current production and provide
many investment opportunities for the
company as well.
Imperial Oil’s Resources Division operates the
largest thermal recovery operation in North
America, and the second largest in the world, at
Cold Lake. We also hold a significant interest
(25%) in the Syncrude Canada oil sands mining
project at Fort McMurray, the world’s largest oil
sands development project. We are a participant
in the Sable Island offshore energy project and
hold significant exploration acreage off Canada’s
East Coast. In addition, Imperial Oil is the largest
resource-holder in the Mackenzie Delta area of
Canada’s Far North, holding more than half of
the discovered on-shore natural gas resources.

from, the global upstream expertise of the

Your Opportunities
Each year, the Resources Division hires recent
graduates from Engineering, Geoscience, and
Business disciplines as well as students at the
undergraduate level for Co-op and Summer
work terms. Starting assignments can be in
Calgary or in one of our many field locations.
Many Calgary-based roles require a working
knowledge of field sites, so you can expect
opportunities for considerable travel to field
operations such as Cold Lake or Norman Wells
in Canada’s Far North.
Depending upon your field of expertise, you
can expect to be involved in a number of
projects and activities. Starting assignments are
typically in Facilities Engineering, Reservoir
Engineering, Drilling, Subsurface, and
project management.
Your Career
Early career development is focused on technical
training, the application of technical theory,
practical experiences, technical mentoring and
exposure to the relevant parts of the business.
As a new hire, you should expect two or more
roles within your first four years. The key
milestone in early career development is to
achieve the fully qualified level in one discipline,
which means you will achieve all of the
requirements to gain your professional
designation in four years. Opportunities are

PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS
Refining & Supply and Petrochemicals
As Canada’s largest refiner and marketer of
petroleum products, Imperial Oil operates an
extremely efficient coast-to-coast
manufacturing and supply network that is
managed by some of the most highly
skilled technical professionals in the country.
The Products and Chemicals Division
manages our petroleum products and
petrochemical operations.
A full range of petroleum products, including
gasoline, aviation fuels and lubricating oils, are
manufactured in our facilities across Canada.
Imperial Oil’s refining capacity of approximately
500,000 barrels per day is the largest in
Canada, and exceeds our nearest competitor by
over 50%.
In our petrochemical operations, we
manufacture highly specialized hydrocarbonbased
chemicals and products at our facility in
Sarnia, Ontario. Our polyethylene plant is world
class and, after completion of existing
expansion plans, it will be the largest single
train polyethylene unit in the world.
Who We Hire
Every year, Imperial Oil looks for the best
candidates that Canada’s engineering schools
have to offer. We are especially interested in
meeting with students and graduates in
Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, and
Applications Engineering.
Your Role
Wherever you start in Refining & Supply and

Imperial Oil has almost 30% of Canadian Refining Capacity
Imperial Oil owns and operates four refineries across the
country. In Eastern Canada, the company operates one
refinery at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and two in Ontario
(Sarnia & Nanticoke). Our largest refinery,
Strathcona, is in Western Canada outside of Edmonton.
In addition to fuel products, Sarnia and Strathcona
produce and package lubricants and specialty products.
The Sarnia Research Centre
The Sarnia Research Centre offers opportunities
for postgraduate Chemists and Chemical
Engineers and for Chemical Technologists to
contribute their expertise to continually
improving Imperial Oil’s products and
manufacturing processes. The Sarnia Research
Centre is the largest, as well as the oldest,
petroleum research facility in Canada. Research
of the scope and scale conducted by Imperial
Oil requires both world-class facilities and
outstanding people. Imperial Oil’s laboratories
in Sarnia have some of the most advanced
facilities in North America. While the Sarnia
Research facilities are outstanding, we are
particularly proud of our people. There are
approximately one hundred and thirty
scientists, engineers, technologists and support
staff, over forty with advanced degrees. The
staff is diverse, having been born and educated
in seventeen different countries.
Dartmouth
Customer Service & Distribution
Delivering from Coast to Coast
Providing customer service, taking orders and
getting our products to market are critical
elements of Imperial Oil’s business. That’s where
our Customer Service and Distribution network
fits in, supported by two Business Support
Centres in New Brunswick. This network
facilitates the movement of product from the
refinery gate to the end customer, providing
operationally excellent and customer-focused
services to external customers and to internal
sponsoring business units. Modes of
transportation include pipeline, rail, truck, and
marine. This area provides an excellent
opportunity to use many engineering and
business skills in practical applications while
working with professionals from various
departments to achieve business goals.
Your Opportunities
In an entry-level role within Customer Service &
Distribution, your initial assignment may be in
Calgary, Toronto or Moncton. You will gain
exposure to a wide variety of functions. New
Engineering and/or Business graduates will find
themselves working in one of the following
roles: Financial Analyst, Network Optimization
Analyst, Business Process Specialist, Terminal
Operations Analyst or Transportation Analyst. In
addition to gaining extensive understanding of
the scope of our business, you can expect to
gain experience in corporate planning, project
management, process improvement, financial
reporting, logistics and supply optimization.
Initial assignments are generally for a 9 to 18
month period during which time you will receive
challenging work and have the chance to identify
your preference for a second assignment within
a wide spectrum of opportunities.

Marketing & Sales
MARKETING & SALES
As an engineering or business grad, you can build
a rewarding career with the marketing groups of
Imperial’s Products and Chemicals Division. You
bring the talent and dedication, and we’ll provide
the opportunity.
We sell Esso-branded products – Esso is one of
the strongest brands in the world – and we’re the
leader in our industry. We also provide both
formal training and on-the-job experience to help
you develop a wide range of skills and expertise in
sales and marketing, including such areas as
market dynamics, account relationships and
price/volume/margin analyses.
Retail Sales
Our Retail sales business team is responsible for
the products and services offered through
Imperial’s network of some 2,100 Esso-branded
retail gasoline sites across Canada.
After extensive training covering our retail
objectives and operating practices, you might take
on the role of a Territory Manager, managing the
relationship between Imperial and the retailers
who operate our company-owned sites. This
includes helping the retailer in maximizing his or
her business opportunity, which often combines
operating a large convenience store and car wash
operation in addition to selling motor fuel and
other Esso-branded products. Your responsibilities
would also include ensuring that the best retailers
are operating the best sites through recruitment,
contracting, training, managing performance, and
recognition & deployment initiatives.
Industrial & Wholesale Sales
The Industrial/Wholesale sales business unit sells
products and services directly to some of
Canada's largest industrial companies, who use
them in materials and products found in virtually
every walk of life. Our customers operate in all
industrial sectors, including transportation (road,
rail, marine and aviation), mining, forestry, energy,
automobile and auto parts, and general
manufacturing. We also maintain a national
network of agents, resellers and dealers
(collectively known as associates) who sell Essobranded
products to residential, farm, marine,
aviation and commercial customers, as well as
distributing products to large industrial customers.
Following a comprehensive training program, you
could be placed as a Territory Manager or Sales
Executive. Territory Managers support the
business by supervising the day-to-day operations
of a network of associates by helping them

maintain high operational standards and deliver
industry-leading customer satisfaction. Sales
Executives develop technical and logistical
solutions for a wide variety of industries that
make use of our products in an even wider variety
of applications.
Marketing Services
Our Marketing Services business unit includes
important development and operating functions to
support our sales efforts. Centres of Excellence
exist within Marketing Services in a variety of
areas. They include: offer development; pricing;
network planning; engineering services for
construction, maintenance and remediation of our
physical assets; brand management including the
development and delivery of marketing support
programs, advertising and promotions;
convenience retailing including category
management; and marketing technology, including
e-business applications.
Lubricants and Specialties
Lubricants and Specialties is an integrated
business unit that includes not only marketing
and sales functions but also manufacturing and
delivery of the wide range of lubricants and
process oils sold by Imperial. We operate
lubricant blending and packaging plants in Sarnia
and Edmonton, and our three lubricants sales
organizations reach almost every market sector
in Canada. The industrial sales division serves
customers in the mining, forestry, energy and
manufacturing sectors. The passenger and
commercial vehicle sales division covers key
transportation sectors with direct sales to
railways, auto and truck manufacturers, and
large trucking companies and with sales through
selected channels such as car dealers, mass
merchants and auto parts stores. The branded
distributor sales division supports a network
of distributors dedicated to selling Essoand
Mobil-branded products to farm and
commercial customers.
We also have a basestock and petroleum
specialties sales division that serves customers
who use basestocks to manufacture their own
brands of lubricants, or who use process oils
as raw materials for products that they
manufacture, such as tires, rubber hoses,
adhesives and waxes.
Following an extensive training program, you
could be assigned a role as a Sales Executive,
Technical Specialist, Operations or Supply
Coordinator. Your responsibilities might include
the offer development process, direct sales to a
wide range of customer segments, supply
chain efficiency, quality system analysis or
technical product services, as well as
involvement in many special projects.

Corporate
As Canada’s largest fully integrated petroleum

expertise of a vast array of professionals in
support areas and divisions across the country.
While some support services are provided in all
of our major locations, certain facilities require
specific expertise depending upon the business
area. The following is a brief outline of our key
corporate departments.

Located in Toronto, the Treasurer’s Department
provides expertise to the corporation on a broad

assignments in corporate finance. Transfers within
the department are common and are designed to
expose you to a broad range of activities. In this

The Controller’s Department is a key player in
the success of Imperial Oil. Controller’s offers
dynamic opportunities for professional
accountants in Imperial Oil’s head office in
Toronto and in many operating functions and
facilities across the country. Accountants in the
Early Professional Development Program gain
exposure to a variety of challenging accounting
experiences through a series of job rotations.
Initial assignments involve financial accounting,
earnings analysis, business control reviews,
and the preparation of a variety of analytical
reports for management. This program provides
the necessary CMA/CGA work experience
requirements for those enrolled in those
programs. Working in a team environment,
you’ll progressively advance into senior
Controller’s and management positions as you
gain valuable business knowledge and further
develop your professional accounting skills.
Procurement Services
Most of the Procurement Services business is
centralized within Imperial Oil’s Calgary office,
where it oversees the purchasing function for
the vast majority of the company’s business
units. Through contracting, procurement,
accounts payable and inventory/warehousing
functions, Procurement Services staff are
exposed to virtually every aspect of Imperial
Oil’s Canadian operations – from exploration and
drilling, to production, refining and marketing.

As a new graduate, you can expect to start in
an entry-level role in contracting or purchasing,
and over time, gain exposure to both functions.
Human Resources
The Human Resources Department is critical to
the success of Imperial Oil’s businesses. HR
provides a wide variety of support both to
managers and employees in areas such as
workforce planning, performance management,
compensation, benefits, recruitment,
employment equity, diversity, workplace policy,
education & training, and industrial relations.
The HR Professional Development Program
provides a structured developmental approach
through broad exposure to a variety of HR
functions and a wide range of training and job
assignments. The objective of the program is to
provide a broad background that supports your
continued career growth and development as a
human resources professional. As a new
addition to our HR team, you can expect to
make a contribution in a wide range of areas
including: the development, monitoring and
improvement of HR policies, practices and
programs; specific project work in
compensation, benefits, diversity, employee
development, or workplace policy; or the
provision of HR internal consulting services and
change management support to business unit
management and employees.
Safety, Health & Environment
This function is responsible for developing
policies, systems, and procedures for all
aspects of the company’s health and safety
programs and establishing environmental
protection requirements and regulatory
compliance programs. This important area also
includes defining and maintaining plans for
responding to all types of emergencies. This
function is comprised of senior professional
technical advisors, including environmental
scientists and engineers, who provide support
to various upstream and downstream
operations. The work is varied, challenging, and
requires excellent working relationships with
operations personnel, senior management,
regulators and the public.
Information Services
Work associated with Imperial Oil’s information
systems service delivery function in Canada is
performed primarily by Exxon Business Support
Centre Canada ULC (the “Business Support
Centre”), under a services agreement between
Imperial Oil Limited and the Business Support
Centre. The Business Support Centre is an
