IMS hosted a spectacular season of racing in 2012, with exciting editions of traditional races and a new look
for one of our long-standing events.
Dario Franchitti joined an elite group by earning his third Indianapolis 500 victory in an emotional event
dedicated to the memory of his fallen friend, two-time winner Dan Wheldon. The new IZOD IndyCar Series
car was a rousing success on track, as there were an event-record 34 lead changes in a thrilling race.
NASCAR superstar Jimmie Johnson also earned a spot among the legends in July with his fourth victory in
the Crown Royal presents the Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard powered by BigMachineRecords.com. He
became just the second driver to win the prestigious NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race four times, joining
teammate Jeff Gordon.
The July event also took on a new look, as the Kroger Super Weekend at the Brickyard featured four races
in three days on two tracks. Fans enjoyed two GRAND-AM Road Racing events on the 2.534-mile Grand
Prix road course at IMS, followed by the inaugural Indiana 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on the 2.5-mile oval. It was the first time races took place on the IMS road
course and oval on the same weekend.
MotoGP standout Dani Pedrosa also made history in August by becoming the first two-time winner of the
Red Bull Indianapolis GP.

Fans enjoyed the new-look event lineup in 2012, and that schedule will continue in 2013.
The 97th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, with Franchitti and Helio Castroneves trying to
become just the fourth four-time winner of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” The second annual Kroger
Super Weekend at the Brickyard is set for July 25-28, and the season will conclude with the sixth annual Red
Bull Indianapolis GP on Aug. 16-18.
