Indigo! Success
Thank you to all Indooroopilly State School parents, children and
staff for a wonderful and very successful Indigo! which raised a
substantial $62,000 for our school. It was a beautiful day, sunny
and warm and the crowds came. It was a delight to see the number
of parents and students who came early on Saturday morning to set
up for Indigo! Putting up marquees, setting up stalls and signs,
hanging paintings and helping with the many other aspects of Indigo!
preparation. Past students, parents, staff, students and friends
helped set-up, pack-up and serve. Thank you all for a wonderful day
and a successful Indigo!
Outstanding Student Indigo! Presentations
I was very proud to be the Principal of Indooroopilly State School as
I watched the International Flag Parade, Student Talent Quest, and
viewed the Class Canvas Display. The children who participated in the
International Flag Parade were so proud of their country and
heritage. Some children dressed in their National Costume and all
children carried their country’s flag with pride. The Talent Quest
gave many Indooroopilly students the opportunity to display their
singing, dancing and entertainment talents. (Dr Jill Elsworth (DP) was
an entertaining compere for the Talent Quest!)
DATES to REMEMBER
The Class Canvases were absolutely outstanding this year. The quality and variety of the paintings were
wonderful and attracted a great deal of feedback and praise from parents and the wider school community
for the high quality standard of the work and the outstanding teaching at our school. A group of senior
citizens visiting Indigo! told me they couldn’t believe the children were capable of such outstanding artwork!
While the canvases raised more money than in previous years, as Principal of Indooroopilly, I was extremely
proud of the high quality children’s art on display. The Class Canvases showcase the high quality teachers and
children at Indooroopilly SS and I am extremely proud to be their Principal.
Indigo! Thanks
There are so many people to thank for the success of Indigo! –
from Cafes, Pocket Money Stall, Plants, Face painting, Fairy Floss, Fishing, Chocolate Toss, Cafés, Nachos,
Pizza, Drinks, Cakes, Books, Pocket Money and Bar to the Silent Auction which involved obtaining thousands of
dollars of donated items, the Curry Stall involving cooking huge quantities of delicious curries, the Hamburger
Stall that involved slicing hundreds of tomatoes, and the Class Canvases which involved supporting children
and teachers to paint each canvas and hang all the canvases in the Art Cafe, your support has been
outstanding! Thank you all!

Thank you Indigo! Co-Ordinators – Susie Dash, Merissa Seymour, Tania Dempsey, Shannon Breen and
Thank you Indooroopilly SS Families – Thanks to all our supportive families and children who have done so
much to make Indigo! this year a huge success!
Thank you Sponsors – Audi WestBrisbane who provided $10,000 in sponsorship for Indigo! your support
atmosphere of our Fair.
Doug Disher Real Estate – thank you for sponsoring our fireworks display to
the value of $5,000. Everyone loves the fireworks and it is a fabulous way to
end a great day. Thanks to Doug and his team for attending the Fair all day and
for giving out balloons, sample bags and a raffle to support our school.
and help in so many different ways. You are a fantastic staff and your support
and enthusiasm is most appreciated.
Indooroopilly State School is a wonderful school and Indigo! enabled us to
showcase our great school. Thank you to all involved and all who supported
our Fair.
Olympic Games
Over the next two weeks as you enjoy the Olympic Games as they are televised from London, look out for
three members of the Australian Swimming Team – Cate Campbell (Women’s 50m, 100m freestyle); Bronte
Campbell (Women’s 50m freestyle); and Christian Sprenger (Men’s 100m breaststroke). These three
swimmers train in our Indooroopilly SS Swimming Pool and Cate and Bronte’s proud sister Abigail is in 6A at
our school. We wish Cate, Bronte and Christian all the best at the Olympic Games. Coach Simon Cusack is
attending the games with these athletes and is proud to have been selected as an official Australian Swim
Team Coach.
Sports News
West Taylor Bridge Athletics Carnivals, Friday 3 and Monday 6 August 2012, University Of
Queensland Athletics Track
This year we have a large contingent of athletes representing our school at the WTB Athletics Carnival,
approx 46 on each day. This year we have hired coaches to transport the students and if any parents would
like to go on the bus please call Mr Pearce to confirm your seat. Since our school sends 2 staff members to
help with the running of the day then we urgently rely on parents to help supervise the students in the stand
waiting for their races. This is not an onerous task but helps with the smooth running of the day. We
encourage parents to attend the day to support their child and to cheer on the Indooroopilly team. Team
members need to meet Mr Pearce at the Taringa Pde bus stop outside the pool at 8.00am on Friday and
3

Monday. You will return to school by 2.30pm. Please wear athletic clothing as well as sun protective clothing
(hat, sunscreen, t shirt/polo shirt to cover your shoulders). Please take plenty of water and food for the day.
MUSIC NEWS
Changes to Mrs Lee Long’s Program Tuesday 7 August
Mrs Lee Long is required to assist at a music camp on Tuesday 7 August so there will be no lessons on this
day. She will transfer these lessons to Thursday 9 August. Could her students please bring their instruments
to school on the Tuesday and the Thursday? Mr Grainger will take rehearsal for Senior Concert Band and
year 7 Extension Music on the Tuesday as usual.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM RECRUITMENT 2013
Our Instrumental Music recruiting process is commencing earlier this year to encourage maximum
participation in our fantastic music program in 2013. Students in Year 2 will be encouraged to consider entry
into the Strings program and students in Year 4 will be offered places in the band program.
Our Instrumental Music program offers one 30 minute lesson per week and one before school rehearsal each
week. Students then participate in a music program to learn an instrument with several performances
throughout the year on school parades and in local school music competitions. A student’s commitment to this
program is approx 15 minutes per night practice on the instrument and reliably attending schedule rehearsals
and lessons. Participation in the Strings program is a 5 year commitment and in the Band Program is a 3 year
commitment. If your child leaves the school during this period and attends another state school then he/she
automatically is enrolled in that school’s music program. There is a music handbook containing all information
on the program and outlining the costs to parents. Costs include a music levy, instrument purchase/hire and
performance uniform (purchased at Uniform shop). Students are offered an instrument based on their
suitability to that instrument and to balance the ensemble or band. Our instruments on offer are violins,
violas, cellos, double base, woodwind, percussion and brass.
The recruitment process:
• All students in years 2 and 4 are assessed on their music ability by our classroom music
teacher, Mrs Hoey during class time.
• 2013 Instrumental Music flyer sent home to Yr 2 and yr 4 students
• Class teachers then complete a learning profile on each of the qualifying students from this
assessment (e.g. independence in learning, reliable, on task behaviour, etc)
• Instrumental teachers assess students on different instruments
• Parent Information Night on Monday 3 September 6.30pm – 7.30pm for all Year 2 and Year 4
students and parents in hall
• Teachers distribute offers to qualifying students to join the program
• Parents respond with a confirmation/rejection
• Parents are invoiced for the program.
SHARING COMMUNICATIONS
To keep parents up to date with classroom learning our Year Level teams will send home a Year Level
Newsletter once per term. This year we have been trialling the new Australian curriculum ( English, Maths
and Science) in our classrooms and our teachers have only been informed of the units of work approximately
6 – 8 weeks ahead of delivery. In 2013 we will be implementing a new History curriculum. Our teachers and
students are enjoying the new challenges presented by this fantastic initiative along with the online
resources. So now we would like to help parents understand the topics being covered in the classroom so they
can assist their child with any homework or projects associated with the classroom learning.
From the Acting Deputy Principal, Wendy Fender.
Picnic Games – 9am to 12.30pm
HOW CAN I ENCOURAGE & SUPPORT MY CHILD TO READ?
“Reading is for enjoyment and learning. Independent and successful readers use a range of strategies to
understand an author’s message.”
• Talk with your child
• Provide a positive role model
• Read with your child every day
• Listen to your child read
• Encourage your child to read from a wide range of sources
• Try to locate books about his/her interests.
Other strategies you could use include:
• Using a timer for a set amount of reading time that they can negotiate.
• Reading a book aloud to them. (Have your child read words that you know
he or she can already read).
• Having them point out words while you read aloud.
• Reading aloud together.
• Reading 10 pages together, five each.
• Suggesting that they read into a voice recorder or a microphone.
• Asking them to read to a favourite pet or sibling
Can’t work out a word? Don’t understand?
If your child pauses while reading, wait for five seconds to allow time to work
out the word, then give a helpful prompt; for example:
• What do you think you could do to work out the word?
• Look at the first letter. Look at the last letter. Look at the letters in between.
What do you think the word might be?
• Does it look like any other word you know?
• Try sounding it out.
• Try breaking the word into syllables eg. qui / ver / ing
• Read the sentence again.
• Read to the end of the sentence. Any idea?
• Does it make sense in the story?
• Does the word look right for what else is on the page?
*If your child has not worked out the word after two prompts, name the word.
Then ask them to say the word again, start the sentence from the beginning
and continue.
Sometimes it is useful to ask a question while they are reading to
confirm their understandings or suggest a strategy; for example:
• What do you think it says here?
• Find the part where it says that…
• On this page I can see a word you know. Can you find it?
• What word on this line tells you that..?
• How do you know that?
• Find the words starting with a group of letters eg. ‘str’ - string.
• Find the words that contain a group of letters on the page. eg. ‘in’ – find.
• Show me the part that tells us about the diagram.
Broaden your child’s reading experiences:
• websites • accounts • text messages • school newsletter • memos • school notices• recipe books •
newspapers • instruction manuals• magazines • signs • menus• forms • emails
