3:00 p.m. Check-in at Hotels (for overnight guests only)<br />

Men: Candlewood Inn, across from Hilton Garden Inn<br />

Receive your room key, leave your suitcase, and proceed with your instrument to check-in<br />

at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts Lobby, located at Seventh and Chestnut Streets<br />

4:00-7:30 p.m. Placement Auditions<br />

Placement in the ensemble(s) will be based on the strength of the audition. Every student is required<br />

FESTIVAL INFORMATION<br />

<strong>January</strong> <strong>14</strong>-<strong>16</strong>, <strong>2011</strong><br />

The Department of Music at <strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> announces the ISU All-Star<br />

Honor Band Festival, to be held on the <strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> campus on <strong>January</strong><br />

<strong>14</strong>-<strong>16</strong>, <strong>2011</strong>. Students will have the opportunity to perform in an ensemble<br />

conducted by Dr. Roby G. George, Director of Bands at <strong>Indiana</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong>;<br />

Douglas Keiser, Associate Director of Bands at ISU; and Dennis Ballard, conductor<br />

of the Concert Band and head of Music Education at ISU. Students will also attend<br />

masterclasses by ISU Wind and Percussion faculty, participate in sectionals, attend<br />

a special faculty chamber concert, and enjoy the fellowship of other high school<br />

musicians from <strong>Indiana</strong> and Illinois. All sessions are open to directors and parents.<br />

The Sunday afternoon finale concert at 1:30 will be held in Tirey Hall, Tilson Music<br />

Hall.<br />

Please read the following brochure closely as some information has<br />

changed. Directors are encouraged to nominate as many students as you wish who<br />

meet the qualifications as listed on the next page. Please make brief rankings on<br />

the forms and include as many color instruments as possible (horn, double reeds,<br />

low clarinets, percussion.)<br />

Eligibility<br />

Any number of students are eligible to be nominated<br />

for this event if they are:<br />

• currently a member of a high school band in good<br />

standing<br />

• a previous member of an IBA All-<strong>State</strong> Band or IMEA<br />

Honor Band (or Illinois equivalent)<br />

• any member of a District Band<br />

• a recipient of a Division I rating in a Group I solo at a<br />

<strong>State</strong> Contest<br />

• any student not in the categories above but are highly<br />

recommended by their director<br />

Selection<br />

Selection and placement is based on the strength of the<br />

audition and the consideration given to the Band Director’s<br />

ranking of his/her students. Students will be placed<br />

in the ensemble best suited for their abilities. A balanced<br />

ensemble with appropriate instrumentation will factor<br />

into the placement of each student as well.<br />

Entry<br />

Band directors should nominate students on the accompanying<br />

form. Only nominate students who are able to<br />

attend all scheduled events from Friday evening through<br />

Sunday afternoon and who are committed to participate<br />

if selected. All nominations must be received in the<br />

Department of Music no later than Friday, October 22,<br />

2010.<br />

Notification<br />

Each student selected will be notified at his or her<br />

home address and provided with the schedule and other<br />

pertinent information. Directors will receive a list (either<br />

e-mail or hard copy) of students selected from his or her<br />

school. All students and directors will be notified beginning<br />

Monday, November 22, 2010.<br />

Registration<br />

Registration will take place on Friday, <strong>January</strong> <strong>14</strong> from<br />

3:30-7:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Center for Performing and<br />

Fine Arts on the ISU campus.<br />

Placement Auditions<br />

A brief placement audition will be held immediately after<br />

registration. Students will be asked to perform several<br />

scales, a sight-reading excerpt, and a brief prepared selection<br />

demonstrating tone and technique. Percussionists will<br />

be asked to perform a prepared piece and sight-read on<br />

their most proficient instrument.<br />

Cost<br />

Resident student fee: $100 (includes housing for 2<br />

nights)<br />

Commuter student fee: $50. Students may commute<br />

only if they are living at home, accompanied by a parent,<br />

or staying with a relative in Terre Haute.<br />

Note: Registration fees are payable when students<br />

return their acceptance form. Do not send payment with<br />

nomination forms. No refunds will be issued.<br />

Meals<br />

Students are responsible for the purchase of all meals.<br />

Concert Dress<br />

Each student will wear dress clothing for the Sunday<br />

concert.<br />

Performance<br />

All concerts are free and open to the public. Directors,<br />

parents, family and friends are encouraged to attend. All<br />

concerts will be held in either the Center for Performing<br />

and Fine Arts, Recital Hall or Tirey Hall, Tilson Music Hall.<br />

Additional Information<br />

Resident students will be housed in the Candlewood<br />

Inn (men) and the Hilton Garden Inn (women). Designated<br />

ISU Band students will supervise resident students.<br />

Appropriate behavior is expected of all students and in<br />

accordance with proper All-<strong>State</strong> conduct and behavior<br />

guidelines.
