Big Basin Redwoods <strong>State</strong> Park<br />

• Henry Cowell Redwoods <strong>State</strong> Park: redwood ecology, logging,<br />

preservation, plant communities, Ohlone.<br />

• Memorial Park, San Mateo County: redwood ecology, land use<br />

history.<br />

• Natural Bridges <strong>State</strong> Beach: coast ecology and geology, monarch<br />

butterflies.<br />

• New Brighton <strong>State</strong> Beach: animal migration (including monarch<br />

butterfly, sooty shearwater), human migration (including Ohlone,<br />

Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese), the CCC, park area recreation<br />

history.<br />

• Pescadero <strong>State</strong> Beach (marsh preserve): coastal wetland<br />

ecology.<br />

• Pigeon Point Lighthouse <strong>State</strong> Historic Park: lighthouse,<br />

shipwrecks, whales and whaling, Monterey Bay National Marine<br />

Sanctuary, <strong>California</strong> Coastal Trail.<br />

• Pigeon Point is also one <strong>of</strong> the gateways for the <strong>of</strong>fshore<br />

<strong>California</strong> Coastal National Monument (CCNM). The Bureau <strong>of</strong><br />

Land Management (BLM) is the primary agency in charge <strong>of</strong> the<br />

CCNM; <strong>California</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>Parks</strong> is a partner.<br />

• Portola Redwoods <strong>State</strong> Park: redwood ecology, timber<br />

harvesting<br />

• Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, Santa Cruz County: area<br />

cultural and natural history, including sandhill plant and animal<br />

special status species.<br />

• San José History Park, City <strong>of</strong> San José: This facility is outside the<br />

study area, but is located only 22 miles from Big Basin<br />

Headquarters. It is worth noting because it contains the relocated<br />

and restored Andrew P. Hill home. Interpretation <strong>of</strong> the home<br />

includes the story <strong>of</strong> Hill’s role in founding Big Basin Redwoods<br />

SP.<br />

• San Lorenzo Valley Museum, Boulder Creek Historical Society:<br />

logging and other forest product harvesting, life in the San<br />

Lorenzo Valley c. 1900.<br />

• Sanborn County Park, Santa Clara County<br />

(interpretation/education run by Youth Science Institute):<br />

nature-based science study.<br />

• Skyline Ridge/Russian Ridge Preserves, Midpeninsula Regional<br />

Open Space District: natural communities, pond ecology,<br />

recreation opportunities and orientation. These adjoining open<br />

space preserves share a visitor center and interpretive program.<br />

• The Forest <strong>of</strong> Nisene Marks <strong>State</strong> Park: redwood forest ecology,<br />

logging and other land use history.<br />
