Frame Relay is a data communications
service that gives subscribers high-speed
data connection between and among their
widely distributed end user locations. By
setting up a virtual private network using our
Frame Relay service, your customers receive
dedicated connections at the speed they
require. Subscribers are charged only for the
resources they actually use, making Frame
Relay an affordable solution.
For carriers, Frame Relay supports a costeffective
access method for moving data
across your network points-of-presence
(POPs). Using Verizon’s shared platform,
you’ll open a new avenue for increasing
revenue, promoting customer retention and
attracting new business, because you can
offer bandwidth options at competitive rates.
The Efficient Data Carrier
Frame Relay is an industry standard
technology for accessing fast packetswitched,
“cloud-topology” data networks.
It is used across the interface between
subscribers’ data terminal equipment
(DTE), such as routers, bridges and host
machines, and Verizon’s network equipment
or data circuit-terminating equipment
(DCE). Frame Relay provides connectivity
via logical channels or permanent virtual
circuit (PVC) connections deployed over our
dedicated access facilities and shared on a
high performance switching platform. This
shared data platform and backbone makes
transport more efficient, so your customers
receive better network throughput as well as

Frame Relay gives you a means
for statistically multiplexing many
logical data conversions, known as
virtual circuits, over a single physical
transmission link. This allows for more
flexible and efficient use of available
bandwidth, so you can meet your
customers’ exact requirements.
Unlike voice transmission that requires
a certain bandwidth to function
properly, data has many gaps between
its transmission, making it transport
as large bursts of data with intervals
in between. Verizon Frame Relay
service is primarily suited for the
“bursty” nature of data traffic because
it uses the majority of its bandwidth for
customer traffic rather than for service
overhead. Little latency is experienced
at each switching node and network
performance is optimized to decrease
delays and raise throughput levels.
In turn, this efficiency maximizes the
revenue you generate from supplying
the service.
Flexible Applications
Your customers perceive Frame
Relay as a value-added service
because of its flexibility in usage and
its many applications. For example,
since multiple virtual connections are
established over one physical access
line, Frame Relay can reduce the
number of customer premises router
ports necessary for WAN applications.
The number of private lines required
to attain mesh connectivity and
reliability can also be reduced. What’s
more, Frame Relay handles terminalto-host,
LAN-to-LAN connections
or applications like imaging, e-mail
and graphic file transfers with equal
simplicity. With all of these capabilities,
Frame Relay is a cinch for resale.
Options in Access Types
Verizon Frame Relay service gives
you options in types of access to our
network, so you can offer a level of
service that is most beneficial to the
individualized needs of your customers.
Providing for your customers’ exact
needs saves them money, and thus
strengthens your reputation in the
marketplace. Our service offerings
include:
• Digital Data Service (DSO)
provides a capacity of 56 or
64 kbps (clear channel)
• Fractional T-1 – offered in speeds
of 128, 256 and 384 kbps
• DS1 over a T-1 Link – access
at 1.544 Mbps
• DS3 Access at 45 Mbps
• PVC interoperability with
ATM networks
• Interzone or statewide PVC’s
are now available in California,
Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri,
Ohio, Oregon, Washington and

Your customers can specify the
maximum amount of bandwidth
they need between locations for the
traffic entering your network. Their
specifications or committed information

ate (CIR) tell us how to create their
virtual circuit. We will set up a data link
connection identifier (DLCI) that our
network will use as an address to steer
their data frames.
We ensure that you always maintain
high service levels because our CIR
guarantees you’ll have a minimum
bandwidth even when the network is
crowded. And, when network activity
is not at peak capacity, your traffic can
burst to the maximum available speed.
Terminating to the Network
You can build a fully meshed virtual
private network (VPN) for your
customers which connects all of their
sites together, while preventing overload
of any one path by bursts of traffic
from different locations. Meshed-frame
topology provides redundancy in case
of network failure. Plus, Frame Relay
shares the network resources with all
of the end users on your network to
reduce the cost to each customer.
Verizon offers Frame Relay Access
Devices (FRADs) or assemblers/
disassemblers for terminating your
access line to the network. Our FRADs
are manufactured by FastComm for
high quality connectivity.

Ethernet user port and up to three
optional serial ports
• MonoFRAD – provides one serial
user port and one network port
• Fastick Modular I/O Board
provides the interface type of any
user or network serial port on the
FastComm FRAD
Cost-Effective Yet Profitable
Verizon Frame Relay service goes easy
on the budget. Our flat rates are based
on the bandwidth you reserve and use
– not on usage. Frame Relay also offers
sizeable savings when interstate traffic
is involved.
Revenue rolls in from your subscribers
from various components of the service
to maintain your profitability. You can
charge for Frame Relay Access Lines
(FRALs), PVCs by CIR and a user-tonetwork
interface (UNI) port only, plus
access or a UNI port with an access
rate element.

Approximately 60 percent of the

access to Verizon. Coupled with our
dedicated wholesale organization, you
can implement Frame Relay nationally
through a single contact – your Verizon

Your Verizon account manager can
coordinate Frame Relay implementation
