Hello from the
University of Central Lancashire
Dear Student,
Congratulations on deciding to
study at the University of Central
Lancashire!
Preston is one of the UK’s newest cities offering an
exciting social and cultural life, combined with a
warm welcome. The North West of England is
famous for its friendliness and you will find people
happy to meet you and welcome you and the many
other international students and visitors who come
to Preston each year. The University of Central
Lancashire (UCLan) is a dynamic, modern University
and you will find student life busy, fun and
intellectually stimulating.
This guide has been written for you to give you
as much information as possible to help you
prepare to come and live and study in Preston.
If, after reading the booklet, you have any
questions or would like any further information,
please do not hesitate to contact the
International Student Support Team. I wish
you a safe journey to Preston and we all look
forward to welcoming you to the University of
Introduction
Going to live and study in another country is very
exciting; it can also be very challenging. At the
University of Central Lancashire we have many
years’ experience of welcoming international
students and we are here to help you every step of
the way. We know that you will have a lot of
questions before you leave home and this booklet
has been prepared to help answer as many of your
questions as possible.
This booklet contains key information for all of our
international students and it is very important that
you take the time to read through it. Please carry
this booklet with you in your hand luggage when
you travel to the UK.
The map of the UK on the back page shows you
where Preston is and how far it is from other cities
such as Manchester and London. If you are bringing
your family with you to live in the UK during your
studies, you should read carefully the sections on
immigration, accommodation and living in Preston.
If, after reading this booklet, you have any questions
please do not hesitate to contact us. Our details are
shown in the back of this booklet. You do not have
to wait until you have a question to contact us: if
you want to email to say ‘hello’ and introduce
yourself, or to give us feedback on this booklet, we
would love to hear from you.
We look forward to meeting you when you arrive.
Section 1: Pre-Arrival Information
Advice on how to prepare for your life and studies at UCLan
Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
(CAS) Number, Visas and Immigration
Tier 4 (General) Student Visa
International students applying to come to the UK
to study at degree level or above (and some English
language courses) will normally have to apply for
their visa under Tier 4 of the Points-Based System
(PBS). The only exceptions to this are non-
EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals (please see below –
EU/EEA/Swiss National students).
You should contact the visa section in your local
British Embassy/High Commission and they will be
able to provide you with full information, including a
list of all documents that you will need to apply for
a Tier 4 visa and information about any health
checks/certificates you may need to have/provide.
You can apply for your Tier 4 visa three months
before the start date of your programme of study.
To check where your nearest British Embassy is
located, please visit
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/countries
To obtain your student visa you must
supply the British Embassy/High
Commission with the following:
• a completed visa application form
with the required fee
• a current passport or travel document
• a CAS number from UCLan (if
applying for Tier 4) OR a letter from
UCLan (if applying for a Student
Visitor Visa)
• documents to show that you have the
correct level of finances (maintenance)
available
• documents used by UCLan when you
were accepted onto the course
(if applying for Tier 4)
• your biometric details
5

IMPORTANT
Please check that, once granted, your Tier 4
visa lasts for the duration of your course of
study in the UK. It can be very difficult to
change the information on your Tier 4 visa
once you have used it to travel to the UK.
There is more information about coming to the UK
to study on a Tier 4 visa at http://www.ukba.home
office.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/ and on UCLan’s
International Office website (under Immigration).
The International Student Advisors at UCLan are
trained to provide you with specialist information
about applying for a visa to come to the UK and
about extending your visa when you are in the UK.
Further information about visas and immigration
can be obtained from the UK Council for
International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website:
www.ukcisa.org.uk
The UKCISA website is a very good resource and
contains lots of information for international
students.
Your CAS Number
You will need a CAS number in order to
apply for a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK (or to switch
from a different immigration route [or Tier] to Tier
4) under PBS. Your CAS number will confirm that
UCLan is your sponsor, in immigration terms, and
that you have fulfilled our requirements for entry
onto your course.
Please note that we will need to see the originals
of all your certificates and transcripts at enrolment
as well as your passport and visa (please see the
section on Enrolment in Section 2).
You should accept your offer as quickly as you can.
If you applied through UCAS you should accept
your offer through them. If you have applied
directly to UCLan or are a postgraduate student you
can confirm your acceptance to your School or
International Admissions:
InternationalAdmissions@uclan.ac.uk
Registering with the police
Please see ‘Police Registration’ in Section 2 of this
booklet. This is done following your arrival at UCLan.
Enrolling and Attending
As a Tier 4 student, you will have a number of
very important responsibilities. These include
enrolling on your course at the right time and
attending regularly. Penalties for failing to
comply with PBS will be implemented by UKBA
and may be severe and long-lasting. UCLan staff
are committed to helping you comply with PBS
regulations. If you have any questions, please
contact us.
For more information, please see ‘Attending
classes’ and ‘Enrolment’ in Section 2 of this
booklet.
University Pre-Sessional
English courses
If you are coming for a University Pre-Sessional
English course http://www.uclan.ac.uk/schools/
languages_and_international/pre_sessional_
english.php and have a conditional offer for a
degree level course (i.e. entry to your degree course
depends on the successful completion of your
University Pre-Sessional English course) you will only
get a Tier 4 visa for the length of your University
Pre-Sessional English course plus one month. Upon
successful completion of this University Pre-
Sessional English course, you would have to apply
for an extension to your Tier 4 visa (this can be
done in the UK and the International Student
Advisors will be able to help you with this). Please
note that if you hold a Student Visitor Visa
whilst studying the University Pre-Sessional
English course, you will need to return home
to apply for a Tier 4 entry clearance visa for
your main degree course.
FoundatiONCampus Courses
If you are coming to join a FoundatiONCampus
course please contact the UCLan International
Student Support Team for advice about applying
for your visa.
Students wishing to bring their
families to the UK
There are very strict rules about whether you can
bring your family to the UK whilst you are studying.
There is more information about this at:
http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/student/immigration.
php#bring_family
If you are able to bring your family with you to the
UK during your studies, please be aware that it may
take some time for you to find suitable
accommodation for your family – please see the
Accommodation section below. You may also need
to arrange the enrolment of your children in school,
if you have children between the ages of 5 and 16,
and then organise accommodation close to the
school (please email ISATeam@uclan.ac.uk before
you arrive; we can provide you with a list of schools
and nurseries). For these reasons we do not
recommend that you bring your family with you to
Preston until you have secured suitable
accommodation.
If your husband/wife and/or dependant children are
EU/EEA/Swiss nationals then they do not have to
apply for a visa. We would recommend that you
apply for an EEA Family Permit. Please contact us if
you want more information about this.
Cost of living
The cost of living in Preston represents excellent
value for money compared to other cities in the UK.
A single student (with no family) on a course lasting
9 months or more will need to provide evidence to
UKBA of access to living costs/maintenance funds
totalling £7,200 per year, in addition to evidence of
funds to pay tuition fees. If you are on a course
lasting less than 9 months you will still be required
to demonstrate access to maintenance funds of
£800 per month, as well as having enough money
to pay your tuition fees.
When you arrive in the UK you should ensure that
you have enough money to pay for your
accommodation and buy food for the first few days
while you are waiting to open your bank account.
We advise you not to bring large amounts of cash
with you. You should bring about £400 and carry it
in your hand luggage.
PLEASE REMEMBER: AS AN INTERNATIONAL
STUDENT YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY
TO THE STUDENT LOANS COMPANY.
Student Visitor Visa (SVV)
You can apply for this type of visa if you are a
non-EU/EEA/Swiss National coming to UCLan to
study on any course which is for six months or less
or for certain English Language courses that last
up to 11 months.
If you are a visa national – i.e. you need to obtain
entry clearance to come to the UK – you must
apply for this visa before you travel to the UK. You
should be aware that you cannot extend your
Student Visitor Visa while you are in the UK - at the
end of the six months (or 11 months if granted for
certain English language courses) you must return
home. You cannot ‘switch’ to a Tier 4 (General)
Student Visa while you are in the UK if you entered
the UK with a Student Visitor Visa.
If you enter the UK on a Student Visitor Visa you
will not be able to work (whether this is paid or
unpaid; this includes work placements).
If you are a non-visa national – i.e. you do not need
to obtain entry clearance before travelling to the UK
– we would still recommend that you apply for entry
clearance as a student visitor before you travel.
However, if you are a non-visa national and you
decide not to apply for your Student Visitor Visa
before you travel to the UK, you will need to explain
to the Immigration Officer at the UK airport/port of
entry about your course, stating that you require a
Student Visitor Visa. You will need to show
documentation (your original offer letter) for the
course which lasts six months or less and evidence
of your financial resources to pay tuition fees, living
costs, and the fare for your return journey home.
Please note: If the Immigration Officer refuses you
entry into the UK when you arrive and you have not
obtained your visa before you travelled you will not
be allowed to remain in the UK to appeal against
the decision to refuse you entry; you would be sent
home immediately. A list of visa nationals can be
found at the following web address (if your country
is not on this list, then you will be a resident of a
non-visa national country):
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visasimmigration/general-info/
8 www.uclan.ac.uk/international

Passports
If you have a passport and are using it to apply for
a visa to travel to the UK, please check that it is not
due to expire within the next six months and that
you have enough blank pages left in it.
EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals
The following countries are members of the
EU/European Economic Area (EEA):
Austria Greece Netherlands
Belgium Hungary Norway
Bulgaria Iceland Poland
Cyprus Ireland Portugal
Czech Republic Italy
Romania
Denmark Latvia Slovakia
Estonia Liechtenstein Slovenia
Finland Lithuania Spain
France Luxembourg Sweden
Germany Malta United Kingdom
If you are an EU/EEA or Swiss national and you
have accepted a place on a course at UCLan, you
can enter the UK without a visa and you also have
the right to live in the UK for the time you will be
studying on your course.
Although not essential, people from the EU/EEA
can apply for a UK residence permit. A residence
permit simply confirms that EU/EEA nationals have
the right of residence in the UK under European
Community Law.
This is very helpful if your husband/wife or
dependants (children) are not EU/EEA/Swiss
nationals and are going to live with you in Preston.
The EU/EEA Residence Permit is free of charge to
EU/EEA and Swiss nationals and their families.
Please email us if you want any further information
about this.
Insurance
We strongly recommend that you arrange adequate
insurance for your stay in the UK. We suggest your
insurance includes: travel insurance, belongings
insurance and personal insurance to cover
unexpected events such as the need to travel back to
your home country in an emergency. You may wish
to arrange appropriate insurance before you leave
home; alternatively, you may wish to make insurance
arrangements once you are in the UK (although if
you choose this option, please ensure you have
enough travel insurance for your journey to the UK).
Companies such as Endsleigh Insurance offer good
student packages - see www.endsleigh.co.uk.
Remember to make sure your insurance covers the
value of your possessions.
Integration
Integrating successfully into life in the UK will mean
the difference between your experience being good
and your experience being fantastic! The process of
integration can start right now with you preparing
yourself for the differences you will encounter in the
UK; this preparation is very important and we have
attached a link on our website to a free online
resource to help you develop an understanding of
the differences in academic life here and also about
how best to integrate socially and culturally into life
in the UK; the link is
www.prepareforsuccess.org.uk/
We want to help you to make the most of your time
in the UK and get the maximum benefit from your
time here. In order to help the process of you
integrating into the life and customs of the UK, and
making friends with both UK students and students
from other countries, the International Student
Support Team organises a wide range of social
events and activities in the first few weeks of term
and throughout the academic year, including a
welcome party, day trips and evening events. Please
make every effort to join in these activities as
integrating well from the start will help you to have a
rich and varied experience in the UK.
You can also watch videos of some of UCLan’s
international students talking about integration at:
Accommodation
Living in Preston
Compared to other cities in the UK, living in Preston
is good value for money. Before you leave home
you will need to decide if you want to live in
University accommodation or in University-
Registered private accommodation.
Private accommodation: University
registered accommodation
If you choose to live in private registered
accommodation, the Accommodation Staff at
the University will give you details about how to
look for somewhere suitable once you have
arrived in Preston.
Private accommodation
(not registered with the University)
This type of accommodation is not owned by the
University and has not been checked by the
University. If you decide to choose this type of
accommodation, please ensure that you are satisfied
with the standard of the accommodation and that it
meets safety regulations. The Accommodation
Service can give you advice on UK safety regulations
in relation to shared housing. If you decide that you
want to live in private accommodation you will need
to find and book this accommodation as quickly as
you can when you arrive.
Accommodation for Students
bringing their family with them
The University does not have accommodation for
students with families. However, there are a lot of
‘Letting Agents’ in Preston – we can give you a list
when you arrive at UCLan. It can take time to find
accommodation which is suitable for a family and
we recommend that you do not bring your family
with you to Preston until you have been able to find
accommodation. UK law governs how many people
can share a single room; therefore you and your
wife/husband and children cannot share a single
room. If your children are over the age of five, they
will need to attend school so you should choose
accommodation which has a school close by.
If you do not book accommodation before you
arrive in Preston, you will need to arrange Bed and
Breakfast or Hotel accommodation. Useful
information can be found at
Section 2: Arrival Information
A-Z guide of useful information for once you have arrived at UCLan
A
Academic information
The way we teach at universities in the UK may be
different to teaching methods in your home country.
You might be used to your tutors telling you
everything you need to know. In the UK you are
responsible for getting the information you need
and you will be expected to check your School
notice-boards, the UCLan website and your emails
on a daily basis.
Academic study methods
You may find that the way students write their
essays, undertake course work and study at UCLan
is very different to how you worked in your home
institution. During your course you will be given
information about reading widely around a topic
and how to research it thoroughly. You will also
learn how to analyse and describe the work you
have undertaken.
It is very important that you learn how to
present and write your work correctly at UCLan.
See the section ‘Plagiarism’ for more information.
If you go to the following website you will find lots
of useful tips which will help you:
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/information/services/
sas/the_i/course_stuff/assessment_exams.php
#Plagiarism
Methods of learning at UCLan include:
Lectures - this is where a tutor will talk to the class
and give information about the subject. You are
expected to listen and make your own notes. You
are not expected to write down everything the tutor
may say but you should write down the most
important information.
Seminars - these are discussion groups that take
place between the tutor and students. During
seminar sessions you could discuss the previous
lecture or a piece of reading material. Seminars
allow you to become more involved with your
studies by discussing what you have learned and
also enable you to ask questions. Seminars are very
important and you will need to ensure that you
prepare well beforehand.
Tutorials are when you meet with your personal
tutor with whom you can discuss planning and
preparation of your work, including study methods
used at UCLan, or any academic problems you
might be having.
Small working groups will allow you to work with
other students on a task assigned by your tutor.
Working in groups is enjoyable and will allow you to
share your ideas, develop your English and make
friends with other students on your course.
Laboratory, workshop or studio work may be required
as part of your course. These are valuable sessions
which will allow you to develop your course skills.
Computer work is required in almost all subjects.
You will be expected to submit word-processed
work to your tutors. Please see the section ‘IT’ for
more information.
You will also be expected to carry out study by
yourself. This will include reading widely on your
subject, making referenced notes and researching
information. Independent study is expected of all
students studying in universities in the UK. If you need
more information about this please speak to your
tutor who can help you prepare and plan for this.
If you are having any problems with your course it is
very important that you go and see your tutor as
quickly as possible; s/he will try to help you.
If you are still worried you can speak to your
Academic Advisor (based in Student Services) or you
can come and see the International Student Support
Team (ISST) based in The ‘i’.
A
Advisory service for students
with disabilities
There are specialist advisors at UCLan who can
give you information and advice if you have a
disability. These staff are based in Student Services
and can be contacted on 01772 892572.
More information can be found at:
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/information/services/sss/
disability_services.php
Please also see the section on ‘Disability’ below
for a definition of disability in the UK.
Attending classes
It is very important that you attend your classes so
that you get the most out of your studies and meet
the requirements of your Tier 4 visa. The University is
required to monitor your attendance and report
unauthorised absence to the UK Border Agency. If
you need to apply for a visa for additional leave to
remain as a general student in the UK your course
leader will be required to confirm that your
attendance has been satisfactory. If you are unable
to attend due to illness, or for another reason, you
should ensure that you tell your lecturer about the
classes that you will be missing.
B
Bank accounts
Now you are in the UK, you will need to open a
UK bank account.
Before you can open a UK bank account you will
need to pay your fees and enrol (please see
‘Enrolment’ and ‘Fees’ for more information).
When you have decided which bank you want to
use, you will need to contact them to ask what
documents you will require to open your
account. Normally you will need:
• your offer letter and your UCLan Corporate Card
AND
• your passport
• a letter from the University*
* You can get this letter from the International
Student Support Team in the ‘i’. Please note
that it can take up to 10 working days to
produce this letter.
C
Clubs and societies
It is a really good idea to make as many new
friends and integrate with as many people as
possible. An excellent way of doing this is for
you to join a University club or society. This will
help you settle in and feel at home. You will find
a full list of the clubs and societies at:
www.uclansu.co.uk/activities/clubs.php
This website gives students information about
sports clubs, societies, media volunteering,
volunteering in general, student council fora,
course representatives and ‘Give It a Go’. You
can also telephone 01772 894860.
Council tax
This is the UK’s local government tax.
International students sharing a home with other
full-time students or living alone will not
normally have to pay council tax during their
official course dates.
If you get a council tax bill from Preston City
Council, take it to the reception in The ‘i’ where
the staff there will be happy help you.
C
Culture shock
Living and studying in a new country can be
stressful and even though it may be something you
have planned for, the effect that culture shock can
have on you may surprise you.
It is good to remember that most international
students will experience this when they first arrive –
it is normal to experience culture shock.
Tips for dealing with culture shock
• Keep in touch with family and friends at home
• Have familiar things around you such as
photographs
• Eat familiar food
• Eat a healthy diet
• Take regular exercise. It is good for your health and
can be a way of meeting new people. Why not
visit the UCLan Sports’ Centre to find out more?
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/uclansport/sir_tom_finney/
index.php
• Make friends with other international students
either from your own culture or from others, as
they will understand how you are feeling
• Make friends with local students so that you can
learn more about each other's culture
• Make use of University services, for example
Counselling in Student Services. Even if you
wouldn't consider using such services in your
home country, in the UK it is normal and can be
quite beneficial.
• Visit the Multi-Faith Centre, or see the website:
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/information/services/sss/student_
services/multi_faith_centre/multi_faith_centre.php
• Visit the Students' Union and find out about its
societies: see the website www.yourunion.co.uk
The International Student Support Team is also
available to talk to you about culture shock and can
refer you to other specialist services and resources to
help you deal with this issue. Please contact us on
ISATeam@uclan.ac.uk
Please also see the section on ‘Integration’ above
which provides useful information about how to
make the most of your time in the UK.
Currency
The currency in the UK is the pound (£GBP). One
pound contains one hundred pence. The coins in
use in the UK are 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1
and £2 coins. Bank notes (paper money) in use in
the UK are £5, £10, £20 and £50. Some shops in
the UK are unwilling to accept £50 notes and
you are advised to change these at a bank to
smaller notes before going shopping.
D
Dentists
If you have pain or problems with your teeth you
will need to see a dentist. You will need to pay for
dental appointments and treatment. When you
register with a dentist you should ask for a list of
their treatment prices or payment schemes.
If you need a dentist you will find a list in the UK
telephone directory (Yellow Pages) or you can
look on the web at www.yell.com
If you need any further advice please contact the
International Student Support Team.
Disability
The definition of ‘disability’ under the Equality
Act (2010), includes individuals who have a
physical or mental impairment and/or an
impairment that has a substantial and long-term
adverse effect on one’s ability to perform normal
day-to-day activities. More details about the
definition of disability and the Equality Act
(2010) are available at
Doctors and Health Care
During your first weeks at UCLan we will give you
information about registering with a doctor
(General Practitioner – GP) at the University’s Health
Centre and the Buddies will help you to register.
You need to register with the Health Centre as soon
as possible. The University Health Centre can be
contacted on 01772 89 2598. You will need to
book an appointment to see the GP.
If you are staying in the UK for six months or more
you can get free health care from the NHS (National
Health Service) -including GP appointments and
hospital care. If you have dependants (husband, wife
and/or children) they are entitled to free health care if
they are staying in the UK for six months or more.
Emergency care at hospital is free for everyone. For
more information about keeping healthy, visit
www.ukcisa.org.uk/student/info_sheets/keeping_healthy.php
If you are not an EU/EEA/Swiss national and are
in the UK for less than six months, you should
make sure you buy medical insurance for yourself
and your dependants.
EU/EEA/Swiss nationals will need to apply for a
European Health Insurance card which you can
get by applying through the NHS. An application
form is available here:
Driving in the UK
If you plan to buy a car and/or drive in the UK,
you must tax and insure your vehicle. You must
also have a valid MOT certificate. If you have
been in the UK for more than one year you are
required to apply for a UK driving licence.
You must obey driving laws including keeping
within speed limits, wearing a seatbelt and
keeping your car in good working order. There
are very severe penalties for driving when you
have drunk too much alcohol. Penalties can
include a ban from driving and imprisonment.
We recommend that you never drink alcohol
before driving.
If you wish to buy a car, you should go to the
following websites for information:
www.dft.gov.uk/dvla and
www.ukcisa.org.uk/student/info_sheets/driving.php
Plugs in the UK are unique and you will need an
adaptor to plug in any electrical equipment from
your home country. You can buy them in
Wilkinsons, Boots, Maplin and major
supermarkets. The standard electrical system
used in the UK is 240v ac.
Emergencies
The national emergency telephone number in
the UK is 999. This is for the police, ambulance,
fire service and coastguard and is ONLY TO BE
USED IN GENUINE EMERGENCIES. You can call
this number free from any telephone. If you are
using a landline telephone, the emergency
services will know where you are calling from. If
you are calling from a mobile you must explain
where you are.
If you are not sure about whether or not you
should ring 999, you can ring UCLan Security
and they will advise you (see the section on
‘Security’ for more information).
F
Food
Food in the UK may seem strange at first but
trying new foods is part of your experience of
living in another country.
There are some large supermarkets close to the
University. The cheapest supermarkets in the city
centre are Home Bargains and Aldi. In addition,
the indoor market (known as the Fish Market) is
very good for fresh food and is open every day
except Sunday. Outside the town centre you will
find Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Morrisons and Lidl (you
will need to take a bus, ask at the Bus Station for
times). On average you will spend approximately
£50 on food each week.
You can also buy ready-cooked foods at
‘takeaways’ to take home and eat. Friargate has
many takeaway food shops, including burgers,
Chinese and Indian food, Fish and Chips, kebabs
and pizza. You will also find some Halal
takeaways. Most takeaways open from 17:00
until 00:00.
You will naturally miss the foods you would
normally eat in your home country. However,
Preston has a large number of shops that provide
food for many different nationalities including
Polish, Chinese, Arabic and Indian.
On campus there are a number of cafés and
restaurants where you can buy hot or cold food
and drinks. During your first weeks at UCLan you
may consider buying a Smartcard. This card can
be topped up with money and you can use it in
University cafes and restaurants.
The Students’ Union has a number of cafés
where you can buy hot and cold food and
drinks. The Students’ Union also has a shop
called ‘Essentials’ where you can buy fresh fruit,
cold drinks, sandwiches, chocolate and many
other items. You can check out the Students’
Union facilities at www.uclansu.co.uk
Life in the UK
One of the benefits of living and studying in a
different country is the opportunity to meet new
people, eat new foods and find out about other
cultures. As the UK is such a cosmopolitan
society you will probably find that many UK
customs are already familiar to you. However,
you may have certain questions or want to find
out more about particular customs. As such, you
may find the following on-line resources of
value: http://www.educationuk.org/Life-in-the-UK
M
Maps
A map of both the campus and Preston is included
in your Welcome pack. You can also access these
maps via the UCLan smartphone app.
Medicines
If you are feeling unwell and make an
appointment to see the doctor, s/he may give
you a prescription for medicine. The prescription
should be taken to a pharmacist (sometimes
called ‘chemist’). From April 2012 there is a
charge of approximately £7.65 which you must
pay before you will be given your medicine(s).
Some students may be exempt from or qualify
for a reduction in prescription charges. If you
have any questions about this please talk to the
staff in the Health Centre or The ‘i’ who will be
happy to assist you.
Mobile phones
There are many mobile phone stores in the city
centre. Think carefully about what is more
convenient for you: a contract or a ‘pay as you
go’ option. If losing your mobile means you will
owe a lot of money to the mobile phone
company, you are advised to get insurance.
Check which network your friends are using as it
may be free to call people on the same network.
The main mobile phone networks in the UK are:
Vodafone, O2, T-mobile, Orange, and 3.
You will need proof of who you are before you
can sign a contract; this is normally one form of
identification and something confirming your
address.
Identification: any one of the following:
• UK credit/Visa/MasterCard/Switch/Delta/
American Express/debit card
• full or provisional driving licence
• UK/Irish/international passport
Address: any one of the following:
• utility bill - dated within the last 3 months
• bank/building society/credit card statements -
dated within the last 3 months
• full or provisional driving licence
• council tax bill
Multi-Faith Centre
The Multi-Faith Centre welcomes students from a
wide range of faiths, in particular those new to
University. The Centre is opposite the main doors
of the University Library in St Peter’s Square.
It is open each weekday in term time. You can
have a hot drink in the coffee lounge and relax
and meet people in an informal setting.
The Multi-Faith Centre encourages members of
all faith traditions, or none, to develop their
spiritual and religious understanding as they
themselves develop socially and intellectually at
University.
Staffed by a team representing a range of major
religious traditions, the Multi-Faith Centre
provides a friendly welcome, offers personal
guidance (religious or otherwise), can give
information about places and opportunities for
prayer and worship, and puts people in touch
with fellow members of their own faith tradition.
Several different faith groups meet regularly at
the Multi-Faith Centre for worship and discussion.
Regular events at the Multi-Faith Centre include
Christian Union prayer meetings; Muslim Jummah
prayers on Friday; meetings of two Buddhist
groups; meetings of the Pagan society; group
meditation and a faith encounter group. The
Muslim Prayer Room is open all day in term time.
There is also a prayer and worship room open to
members of all faith traditions and a quiet space
for individual prayer, meditation or reading. The
Multi-Faith Centre's library can be used for
reference and the loan of books.
O
Opticians
Eye care is provided in the UK by opticians. There
are many opticians in Preston. Normally you will
have to pay for an eye test on the NHS (between
£17 and £30) unless you are under the age of 19
and in full-time study. When you have had an
eye test you may be given a prescription by the
optician. Glasses (frames and lenses) and contact
lenses vary in price. You might be able to claim
for the costs for new glasses and should see
someone from the International Student Support
Team or The ‘i’ for further information. If you are
interested in having laser eye surgery, you should
contact your optician in the first instance.
P
Personal problems
If you are having problems or concerns that are
not about your studies there are lots of trained
staff who you can talk to.
Counsellors in Student Services will be able to
talk to you about your issues and help you to
understand what is happening, what it means to
you, and how it is affecting you. As you talk
about your situation you may see things
differently and this will help you to deal with
these issues. Appointments made through the
Counselling Service are confidential between you
and the counsellor.
You can make an appointment to speak to a
counsellor by telephoning 01772 892572.
You can also come and speak to an International
Student Advisor about any issues you may have.
The Advisor will help you as fully as they can or,
if they feel it is better for you, could refer you to
speak to someone else.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism means copying work from another
student or from a book, website, journal or other
source, without referencing it.
UCLan has very strict rules on plagiarism and the
penalties are severe.
You will be given more information about
plagiarism by your School when you start your
course. More information about this is available at
Stamps and envelopes can be bought at most
newsagents and at the Post Office on Theatre
Street, Preston. There is another Post Office on
Plungington Road.
Smoking
Smoking is banned inside all UCLan buildings
including student accommodation and is banned
by law in all indoor public places in the UK. This
includes pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and private
members' clubs. You may still be allowed to
smoke outdoors but smoking could still be
banned at certain outdoor locations that are
'substantially enclosed'. This includes football
grounds and railway platforms; therefore, you
need to check before you light a cigarette. If you
are caught smoking in a banned area you could
be fined £50.
If you rent accommodation in the private sector
you must check with your landlord whether or
not you may smoke in the accommodation.
Social life
It is important to get a good balance between
your academic studies and your social life while
you are at University. Having a good social life
will help you to settle in well, provide you with a
network of friends and enable you to try new
activities you might never have thought of
before! If English is your second language then it
will be a good way of improving your English.
Here are some tips:
• Find out about Clubs and Societies organised
by the Students’ Union (SU)
• Join a sports club - this is a really good way to
make friends and keep fit
• Join the International Students’ Association
• Go to the Students’ Union to find out more
about social events and ‘Give It a Go’
• Look at the SU website www.yourunion.co.uk
Social media
You can get up-to-date information on issues
that could affect you as an international student,
by subscribing to our various social media
platforms. Follow UCLanISST on twitter; search
Sports
UCLan provides a wide range of indoor and
outdoor facilities, catering for students’ sporting,
fitness and recreational needs. There are both
casual and competitive opportunities in a wide
range of sporting activities.
We want you to enjoy your time at UCLan and
make the most of the sporting opportunities that
are available. UCLan has the North West's best
outdoor sports arena and its new indoor facility
was opened in summer 2011.
Student Charter
UCLan’s Student Charter is a two-way commitment
or ‘contract’ between the University and each
individual student. It has been developed by the
University and the Students’ Union so that students
gain the maximum from their UCLan experience. It
is a means of establishing what students can expect
from the University in terms of support, and in
return what we expect from our students in terms
of commitment to study. You can read the Charter
at www.uclan.ac.uk/studentcharter
Student Lobby
This is a personalised on-line portal designed for all
students at UCLan. It can be accessed directly from
the internet explorer icon on any University PC.
Once you have logged on to the portal, you will be
able to find out more information about your course
and timetable, as well as access learning resources
and information about student support.
Students’ Union (SU)
The SU have staff whose job it is to help you
settle into life in Preston and help you during
your time studying here. At the SU you can meet
new people through their many social events.
The Bridge 01772 894894, is based in the Students’
Union Building and can help you find part-time work.
The ‘i’
The Student Information Centre, known as The
“i”, is a modern facility operating along the lines
of a one-stop shop, providing a wide range of
information, support and guidance. It is one of
many initiatives developed as a direct result of
UCLan’s philosophy to place students first.
The main reception area offers a general
information facility covering all aspects of
Travelling outside the UK
During your time at UCLan you may have
opportunities to travel which will widen your
experiences of other cultures and enhance your
time in the UK. Applying for a tourist visa can
seem confusing or difficult, so it is important
that you plan and prepare in advance. Most
students who travel to Europe will apply for a
‘Schengen’ Visa.
The International Office has more information on
holiday travel and Schengen visas on their website:
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/information/international/
student_support/immigration.php
Twitter
Remember to follow UCLanISST on twitter to
keep up-to-date with issues and events affecting
UCLan’s international students. Sign up to twitter
and follow us at www.twitter.com/UCLanISST
U
UCLan corporate card
If you did not receive your UCLan corporate card
you will need to take the following to the LIS
Corporate and Retail Services desk in the Library:
• an official document with your signature, e.g.
passport, driving licence, bank card, etc.
• UCLan enrolment checklist
Corporate cards can normally be
created while you wait
and are valid for
use within
24 hours.
V
Visas - extending your Tier 4 visa
The International Student Support Team are the
ONLY staff at UCLan who can give you visa and
immigration advice.
Students with visas may need to extend them at
some point. About six weeks before your visa
expires make an appointment to attend a visa
extension workshop. Keep your bank statements
safe as the most recent month will be needed. You
will need to show that you have enough money to
cover your tuition fees (if you have not already paid
these) and your living costs while studying at UCLan
(usually £1600 if you are extending your visa, but
this figure could rise to £7,200 or more depending
on your circumstances - please see an international
student advisor for more information). The
International Student Support Team has a free visa
extension checking service. It is strongly
recommended that you attend a visa extension
workshop before you send your application.
For information about extending your visa, go to
www.uclan.ac.uk/information/international/
student_support/immigration.php
Very important: All students will have to pay a fee
of £394 (plus £197 for each dependant) to extend
their Tier 4 visa in the UK by post. Students who go
in person to the Public Enquiry Office will have to
pay £716 (plus £358 for each dependant). More
information and forms are available at:
www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk
Voluntary work
Voluntary work is a good way to get experience,
meet people and it looks very good on your CV
when you apply for a job. You don’t get paid for
volunteering (although the time spent
volunteering counts towards the limited number
of hours you can work on a Tier 4 visa). For more
information go to The Centre for Volunteering
and Community Leadership in Livesey House,
room 312, or see the website:
W
Working in the UK during your studies
EU/EEA/Swiss Nationals
If you are an EU/EEA or Swiss National you do
not need a work permit to work in the UK.
If you are from Romania or Bulgaria you must
check with the International Student Support
Team before you look for a job.
Nationals of other countries
If you are from any other country, you will need to
have an endorsement on your visa showing
whether or not you can work.
If you have a visa for six months or more you will
normally be given permission to work either 10 or
20 hours per week during term time and full time
hours during vacation periods. When you get to
UCLan, bring your passport/ID card/visa to the ISST
and we will confirm your work status. If you have
dependants we can check their visa for you too.
If you have a visa for six months or less you will not
normally be allowed to work. It is possible to get a
work restriction changed in certain circumstances
but you should talk to the ISST about this. A work
restriction would also apply to any dependants you
have brought with you to the UK.
UCLan has a student employment agency
called The Bridge, which has information about
part-time work in Preston. You can also speak to
the Job Centre or other employment agencies. If
you have any questions about work you can email
us before you arrive in the UK or talk to us when
you get to UCLan.
National insurance number
Everyone who works in the UK and earns more
than a certain amount per week must pay
National Insurance. To get your National
insurance number (N.I. number) you will need:
• a definite offer of employment
• an appointment with the Job Centre, located
at: The Job Centre, Ring Road, Preston. Tel:
0845 6000643. When you telephone this
number your call will be answered by a
member of staff in the Job Centre. They will fill
in an application form by asking you questions.
The telephone call will take approximately 10-
15 minutes. At the end of the telephone call
you will be given a time and date to go in for
an interview.
+44(0)1772 201201
37

W
You must attend the interview and take the
correct documents with you (see below).
When you go for your interview you
will need to take:
• two forms of identification such as passport,
library card, bank card, or driving licence
• letter from ISST confirming that you are a
student at the University (please allow ten
working days for us to produce this letter).
• a bank statement or utility bill such as
telephone, electricity or gas bill with your name
and address on it
• Police Registration Certificate (if you have to
register with the Police)
• a definite offer of employment from your
employer
You are allowed to start work without
your permanent National Insurance
number as it can take six weeks or
more before you receive it.
However, you can get a temporary
N.I. number immediately. Your
future employer may not know
this so if you have any
difficulties you should ask your
employer to telephone Preston
Job Centre or The Bridge for
confirmation of this.
If the employer does not want to
do this you should go to The Bridge
and ask them to ring your employer
for you. The Bridge, your employer or
the Job Centre can give you a
temporary National Insurance number.
Please note that all legitimate
employers will require your National
Insurance number for taxation purposes.
You should not work for an employer who
offers to pay you ‘cash-in-hand’ – this is
illegal in the UK.
Working after your studies
For advice on employment after you finish your
studies at UCLan, our Careers Service - ‘futures’ -
can offer you a range of services. These services
include providing information, holding job fairs,
offering one-to-one advice and CV checking.
Further information on working after your
studies is available from UKCISA -
