AS residents enjoyed a pleasant weather
with a speculation of early onset of
Fall in the country on Monday, the
Department of Meteorology (MET) has
urged people to brace up for a hotter
temperature on Tuesday.
The temperature on Monday fell
three points below the Sunday’s 46
degrees Celsius, giving the resident an
opportunity to relish cool breeze, especially
during the early hours of evening.
MET forecast put Tuesday’s peak
temperature in Doha at 45 degrees
Celsius and 34 degrees as lowest.
According to Abdullah al Mannai of
MET, the fluctuation in the temperature
was normal occurrence in the
month of August.
“The fluctuation in humidity rate in
this month is normal. The wind direction
remains stable for the past four
days despite the changes in temperature.
All these occurrences are normal
in the month of August,” he said.
Asked if this year’s Fall is likely to
begin earlier, Mannai said,
“Seasonally, temperatures will go
down after September.”
MET urged residents to expect a hot
temperature with slight dust in some
places on Tuesday.
Medical practitioners in the country
have been raising the awareness of the
community that the strong dust winds
that the country has been experiencing
over the past few days is behind the
sudden rise in respiratory problems,
especially among children.
With Eid al Fitr just around the corner,
residents are looking forward to
enjoying favourable weather.
“It would be nice to have this pleasant
temperature during Eid as my family
and friends are planning a trip outside
Doha, perhaps an outdoor activity,”
Melvin, a Filipino expat said.
Suresh, another expat from India, said:
“We plan to have a picnic at Al Bidda
Park on a day during the Eid holidays.
We really hope weather gets better so
the children can enjoy.”

DFI to host short film
production workshop

THE Gulf Development Unit (GDU)
of the Doha Film Institute (DFI) will
launch the second phase of its film
production workshop aimed at nurturing
the local filmmaking industry.
The four-day workshop tagged
‘Tawash’ will run from September
1 to 4
The workshop will introduce participants
to the basic skills and concepts
involved in short film production,
including the role of the producer
and director, the craft of screenwriting,
budgeting, location scouting,
and the processes involved in casting,
shooting, and editing, with hands-on
demonstrations. The Arabic word
‘tawash’ is used to refer to a pearl
diver and trader.
Talking to Qatar Tribune, Yousef
Adel, a participant in a previous DFI
workshop on script-writing, said:
“This kind of workshop will definitely
enhance the local film scene. I
learned a lot about filmmaking at the
previous workshop I attended. It was
also a perfect opportunity to meet
other film-makers. I would encourage
other filmmakers and even beginners
who have a serious interest in
making movies to participate in the
event.”
The training programme is open to
everyone from enthusiastic film fans,

RASGAS invested over $49 million
in projects that reduce emissions
and enhance waste management
in 2011, said Managing
Director of RasGas Hamad
Rashid al Mohannadi.
The company on Monday
released its 2011 sustainability
report, which provides a comprehensive
review of its environmental,
social, economic and corporate
performance for the year 2011.
Speaking about the report,
Mohannadi said, “Our 2011 operational
results highlight our key
strength: the ability to safely and
reliably deliver on our commitments.
The strong safety and operations
performance underpins
good environmental performance.
In 2011, we invested more than
$49 million in projects that reduce
emissions and enhance our waste
management.”
RasGas Company Limited
established producers in television
and theatre to aspiring film industry
professional. Even those who are only
able to attend one of the days are welcome
to apply. Registration for the
workshop is open until August 23
and selected participants will be notified
on August 26.
The workshop will be facilitated by
a pioneering Emirati producer and
director Abdullah Hassan Ahmed of
the UAE, who will share his skills and
knowledge with the participants.

participants to
the basic skills and
concepts involved in
short film production.
Participants will analyse and discuss
four of Abdullah’s short films
Tinback, Soora Naqesa, Sabeel and
Asghar Min Alsama’a. The will
analyse the films across filmmaking
disciplines, including screenplay
craft, budget creation, the shooting
process and post-production techniques.
Speaking about the workshop,
Ahmed said, “I am honoured to have
an opportunity to educate upcoming
filmmakers on the craft and share
the insights I have gained throughout
my career. Short films may not
carry the same commercial weight

GHG verification, screening
of emission reduction opportunities,
engagement with local stakeholders
and assessment of options
for developing its voluntary
reporting.
As part of its efforts to reduce

Ahmed is one of the founders of
the Emirati film industry, with over
15 years experience in the industry.
His works include the award-winning
documentary Rise of the Doing
(2005), Small Sky (2006), which
screened at the Dubai International
Film Festival, and Tinbak (2007).
Ahmed’s films have actually been
shown at several international film
festivals. He received the Best Film
prize at the first edition of the Gulf
Film Festival and Best Director at
San Francisco’s Arab Film Festival
in 2008. In addition, Ahmed is a cofounder
of Faradees, a non-profit
film production group dedicated to
promoting Emirati cinema.

a series of film education and training
programmes for filmmakers
here in Qatar as well as the GCCº
region.

injection (AGI) scheme that stores
CO2 and hydrogen sulphide
(H2S), reducing emissions of CO2
and sulphur dioxide (SO2) from

resulted in eliminating one million
tonnes of CO2 and 11,000 tonnes
of SO2 per year.
The company also completed a
five-year flare minimisation programme,
the first of its kind in
Qatar, which resulted in an overall
emission reduction of 66 percent.
In addition, in terminal operations,
the Jetty Boil-off Gas
Recovery Project was designed to
minimise flaring at loading terminals
in Ras Laffan.
In shipping, RasGas’ use of larger
vessels fitted with liquefaction
facilities resulted in a reduction in
number of voyages required,
which cut emissions per nautical
mile. Older vessels were retrofitted
to use clean LNG as a fuel,
reducing direct emissions from
