High Holy Day Services at
Benilde-St. Margaret’s
This year, as we excitedly construct and improve our
building, we will be holding some of our High Holy
Days programming next door at Benilde-St.
Margaret’s (BSM) school.
We are incredibly grateful for our neighbor, Benilde-
St. Margaret’s school. When they learned of our construction,
they immediately opened their arms and
doors to us. As if this act of brotherhood was not
enough, they are not charging our synagogue for the
use of space. We have always been proud of our relationship
. This year especially, we give thanks!
As always, we will be conducting services in the
main Spiegel Sanctuary, Gruman Social Hall and
Fiterman Chapel, however, other programming,
including our Family and D’rash creative services,
will be at Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Signs and staff will
be available to provide direction. See page 12 for
details and High Holy Days services.
Training for a Mountain Climb
by Rabbi Avi S. Olitzky
A few years ago,
Sarah and I had the
opportunity to climb
Twin Sisters Peak
while on a short vacation in Colorado.
The summit was well above 12,000 feet.
The journey up was two hours, with an
additional hour spent on the peak, and just
shy of two hours descent. We felt it was
an amazing accomplishment. We were
blessed to see the beauty of God’s endless
creations and take in the air that few get to
breathe. I remember our conversation on
the way down from the peak: how we
never could have reached the summit had
we not trained for it.
The High Holy Days are “early” this
year—just a short month away. As I look
ahead to the Hagim, I realize that the Holy
Days are just like a mountain climb.
There we are in synagogue, for hours on
end, pushing forward at full-speed ahead.
We here at Beth El Synagogue do try to
take pit-stops here-and-there during our
services for soulful reflection and meditation,
but even as Ne’ilah approaches, the
constant checking of the watch occurs.
If we are to climb the mountain that we
call the High Holy Days – a trying,
weighty and powerful period of time spent
in body and spirit in the synagogue – how
can we not train for it? We would not try
to climb a mountain or run a marathon
without a serious period of preparation
and training beforehand, so how can we
enter the High Holy Days without such?
Though many might think the easy solution
is regular attendance at synagogue—
that’s really not it at all. Sure, that is a
great place to start. Getting reacquainted
with the feel of the pews. Getting reacquainted
with the lighting in the sanctuary
and the air of the room. But that is only
physical. I’m talking about the mental
and spiritual preparation. How do we
prepare for the mountaintop of Rosh
HaShannah and Yom Kippur? (Enter
this month of Elul.)
Elul is about (as my father would call
it) Preparing our Hearts for the High
Holy Days. Soul-Searching. Heshbon
HaNefesh. We sit back and reflect on
the past year. We make lists of what we
did right and what we might have done
better or differently. We finally pick up
the phone and make that phone call.
Perhaps we affix that mezuzah we’ve
needed to put up or take out that dusty
pair or Tefillin and “re-wind.” We
reacquaint ourselves with our Selves,
our Jewish Selves our Jewish souls.
No one would expect you to finish the
mountain climb without the training;
we cannot have a meaningful and powerful
High Holy Days without the
preparation. As we begin rounding out
the summer, trekking through the
month of Elul, ask yourself: What are
you doing to train and to prepare this
year? It’s just something to have on
our minds this month of Elul—our
Training Season.
Beth El Welcomes New Aleph
School Director
It is with great pleasure and excitement
that the search for a new director
of the Shirley R. Abelson Aleph
Preschool of Beth El Synagogue has
come to a close. Following the recommendation
of a search committee chaired by congregants
Helen Siegel and Debbie Mann, the position of the
Director of Shirley R. Abelson Aleph Preschool has been
offered to, and accepted by, Karen Burton. Karen's loving
nature towards children and parents, her expertise in child
development, extensive experience as a preschool director
and her contagious excitement for early childhood programming
make her the perfect leader for our school. For
the last five years, Karen has established and directed the
Torah Tots program at Torah Academy. Before that, she
founded and built a preschool in Florida for sixteen years.
The search for a new director was made with great
thoughtfulness and concern. Our national search was carried
out by a diverse committee comprised of parents,
teachers, and non-Aleph Preschool parents. We sought
input from as many constituencies as possible and appreciate
the many people who attended interviews, meetings
and offered input. The Aleph Preschool is the gem of our
Beth El Synagogue. For this reason, finding the right person
was critical. We are confident that Karen will truly
lead Beth El forward, "with our young and our old" and we
look forward to the congregation meeting her in the coming
months.
a message from our president `iypdn
During these last few years, I
have been privileged to help
serve this wonderful community.
As I reflect on my experience
of working closely
with our clergy, staff and
Board of Trustees, I have to
confess that I had no appreciation for the affection that
so many have for our shul. I feel blessed by the counsel
of our past presidents, and especially my cabinet of
officers, each one of whom deserves credit for working
so effectively so that we could thrive during the
financial storm that challenged us.
The Yiddish saying, “When one must, one can” neatly
summarizes how our community of Beth El members
responded to the Great Recession that began nearly
two years ago. The economy cast a dark shadow over
our decade-old plan to renovate, redesign and reinvigorate
our facility. Our desire to develop and sustain
innovative programs was at risk. But despite this difficulty,
we were able to move forward.
I will forever treasure the actions of so many members
that stepped forward to help, knowing that we were
not the only Jewish institution asking for support. Our
entire Jewish community felt the economic ground
shift under them yet you felt that we must sustain our
beloved shul during its hour of need.
During the last few years, there were many happy
occasions, stimulating learning experiences and spiritually
comforting moments. However, I was most
touched by the generosity of those whose support
meant that those who were less fortunate could maintain
their ties to our shul.
We are now able to proceed with our plan to build a facility that
meets our current and future needs, only because of the generosity
and the incredible tenacity of many who helped raise the necessary
funds and continue doing so.
The ongoing changes in our building dovetail with a progressive,
strategic plan that will sustain our community’s health into the
21st century while preserving our tradition. Here’s a sampling
of what these changes offer you:
• A state-of-the-art Aleph Preschool for our Tiny Treasures; the
new facility will feature light-drenched learning spaces, providing
a nurturing Jewish preschool experience based on a developmental
curriculum of excellence, led by a highly experienced,
charismatic director who upholds the highest of educational
standards.
• Care for members and family support for those who face serious
health concerns; comfort, education and assistance by our
shul’s nurse within the Jewish tradition, care that is not available
in the larger community.
• Superb youth programs; fun-filled, social and educational
experiences for elementary to high school aged children.
• An alternative Shabbat experience; an encounter with Shabbat
that uses musical instruments, readings and prayer to create a
moving and thoughtful experience. Watch for several other
Shabbat experiences.
• Unique adult experiences highlighted by small study groups
with our superb rabbis, healing services with our inspiring cantor,
internationally recognized speakers in our sanctuary,
thoughtful Shabbat and holiday programming, including
Shabbat dinners for Empty Nesters, Young Adults and Families,
a shul seder and the Purim extravaganza.
Within the warmth and familiarity of our tradition, we need to
continue growing in ways that best address our community’s
changing needs. By doing so, we can continue offering
an experience of Judaism that enriches all of our lives.
With your ongoing support, efforts of our professional
staff and dedicated lay leaders under my able successor,
Gil Mann, we will continue – L’dor V’dor, from one
generation to the next – to thrive during this exciting
time in our history.
It has been an honor to serve this wonderful congregation.
Thank you for your support over these last few years.
TEN semi truckloads! That is how much material was packed up
and moved during the month of June in preparation for construction at Beth El! As in
any move, we also discarded dumpsters worth of broken furniture, fixtures, equipment
and piles of other materials that have accumulated and outlived their usefulness over the forty
years we have been in our building. How was all this done? Through the efforts, muscles
and commitment of many volunteers and staff. The efforts were led by Peggy Kerska our
facilities director who with competence and good humor orchestrated the entire process and
whose hours of work on this project could not be tabulated. Her husband,
Dennis and sons, Joe and Matt deserve credit and thanks as well. Peggy
was assisted mightily by Dan Ribnick, who worked closely with her and also
saved the synagogue tens of thousands of dollars in moving and storage costs
including donation of a truck for transporting and warehouse storage space.
Many others deserve thanks including Jack Fiterman who donated 1500
boxes, pallets and shrink wrap. Marcia Oleisky who packed forty boxes of
books. We thank the dedicated staff and volunteers who gave thousands of
hours of their time and strength to make our move successful. We’d love to
thank everyone in person and unfortunately, we do not have a complete list
of those who generously gave their time and energy to this project. Please let
us know if we are missing any names, and we will include them in our next article: Mike Blehert, Jill Blustin, Talor
Blustin, Larry Braufman, Benjamin Cantor, Bruce Cantor, Pam Friedman, Mike Frisch, Mace Goldfarb, Howie
Kampf, Markle Karlen, Craig Kupritz, Roger Landy, Stan Levich, Donna Leviton, Steve Moldo, Mark Rice, Ari
Weinstein, Gary Weinstein, Jody Wolk, Norma Wolk, Shawn Wolk. Todah Rabah to them all!
Construction Update
In the last 30 days, competitive
bids for every aspect of our construction
project have been
received and reviewed. A line
by line review of bids has been
conducted by members of our
construction committee together
with our architects and general
contractors. That review is complete,
though will be ongoing
during construction. Bank
Financing is nearly complete and
actual construction should be
underway in a matter of weeks.
First phase work will include the
Aleph School, handicapped
accessibility and our offices. You
should see construction workers
and equipment on site shortly!
Working from the Coatroom!
A magical transformation occurred in June as our offices moved from their space
upstairs to the coatroom. Yes, the coatroom! This was not really magic--it was
hard, dedicated work! Phone lines and internet service needed to be moved and set
up. Old offices needed to be packed…including going through thousands of files.
Desks and files needed to be put in place and many other arrangements also needed
to be made to keep our complex operation up and running without interruption.
Special recognition goes to Linda Goldberg and Peggy Kerska for organizing and
leading this challenging and successful transition. Jessica Zehavi did back flips to
pull off the technical and electronic move. All of our staff deserve our thanks for
squishing into their new space, in a few cases agreeing to work from home, having
such a positive attitude and
keeping our shul humming.
These folks include: Rabbi
Davis, Rabbi Olitzky,
Cantor Abrams, Jerry
Frick, Jeanette Eisenberg,
Raquel Swanson, Marilyn
Weisberg, Barb Parks,
Marilyn Sussman, Danelle
Cunningham, and Anne
Devitt. Todah Rabah to
them as well!
MAX JACOB SEFFREN
Son of David & Cheri Seffren
Honoring Max on his bar mitzvah, his parents will be sponsoring the kiddush.
Mitzvah Program: This year, on his journey to bar mitzvah, Max had several family members pass
away. Max never missed a beat, and never complained about going to another funeral or Shiva minyon. Max has learned
about the mitzvah of (aveilut) or mourning the dead this past year. He has attended the services and shivas and displays
a natural compassion for the rest of the family that are grieving. Max has enjoyed learning about our older generation of
great-great aunts and great-great uncles, and cousins who have passed on. He has learned that giving of “yourself” is as
rewarding to him as it is comforting to others. This experience will be with him on his journey to adulthood.
Honoring Tobie on her bat mitzvah, her parents will be sponsoring the kiddush and
the congregational Shabbat lunch.
Mitzvah Program: In preparation for my bat mitzvah, I had the opportunity to perform many mitzvot. One of the most
meaningful mitzvot was visiting the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery and planning an enrichment activity for the children that
were staying there. I read books to the children and planned an arts and crafts activity for them. It felt really good to
see the smiles on the faces of the children and to see how much they appreciated the activities I planned for them.
Volunteering at the crisis nursery made me understand the saying, “one mitzvah leads to another” because seeing the
smiles on the children’s faces made me want to go back and give even more to my community. In honor of my bat mitzvah,
I will also be donating books to Children’s Hospitals of Minnesota and the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery.
Mitzvah Program: Jack feels very strongly about performing mitzvot in the community. Jack has been volunteering at
with the JFCS Passover and Hag Sameach programs. In addition to those activities Jack and his dad have been volunteering
at STEP and Feed My Starving Children for the past 3 years. Jack will be making donations to both programs in
honor of his bar mitzvah. “One of the values I have learned as part of the Harris /Bass family is the value of mitzvot. I am
his favorite games to donate to the Hag Sameach Toy Drive. Jordan has regularly participated in the annual family
Aleph Preschool Fall Location Announcement
The Aleph Pre-School summer camp, B’Yachad, has been a flurry of
activity. From water games to Shabbat services, we have made B’nai
Emet our temporary new home and have provided our children with
all of the love and care that they deserve and desire. Put simply, they
are having a great time.
Even as summer programming continues, we are planning for the
new year. After much consultation with staff, synagogue leadership
and after extensive discussion with B’nai Emet, we are pleased to
announce that the Aleph Preschool will remain at B’nai Emet campus
until our new home is ready.
Beginning in the fall, we will operate our own school with our own
staff, program and curriculum. Through careful planning, we are confident
that spaces will accommodate our needs as well as those of the
B’nai Emet program. Utilizing our Beth El maintenance staff as needed,
we will ensure that the facility meets our standards for these temporary
accommodations. Beth El clergy will likewise be a presence in
the school. In other words, the same Aleph Preschool that you have
known and loved will operate as usual in the fall.We anxiously look
forward to moving into a beautiful, new facility after winter break.
Thank you for your patience and understanding in this period of transition.
Heart Disease Submitted by Hadassah Zohara, Shul Nurse*
*The Congregational Nurse program is made possible in part with grants from the Minneapolis Jewish Community Foundation, Oscar z''l and Ann Victor Congregational Nurse Fund and
Home Health Care Inc. Congregational Nurse Fund, the Park Nicollet Foundation, and the Mt. Sinai Foundation.
Heart Disease remains one of the leading causes of death in the
United States. To prevent heart disease, physicians over the
years have devoted their efforts towards counseling and assisting
patients to stop smoking, modify their diets (predominantly
by reducing fat intake), and exercise more in addition to
medically treating their hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol.
While the data is increasingly clear that those who
have, or are at very high risk for, heart disease should receive
medical treatment, there is much that an individual can do to
reduce their risk of developing heart disease and possibly
reduce, or even eliminate, the need for medication.
As we have known for a long time, among the most important
factors in reducing heart disease risk are diet and exercise.
Research has continued to bear out that sedentary lifestyles and
diets high in saturated fat-containing foods, like red meat and
butter, increase heart disease risk. It is also known that intake
of "trans" fats from partially hydrogenated oils increase cholesterol
and therefore the risk of heart disease. Lesser attention
has been paid to a significant body of research that suggests
that those who are happier and less stressed and who have
stronger social/spiritual support have less heart disease than
those who don't.
Cholesterol
The current cholesterol treatment guidelines are based on looking
at the most cost-effective way to reduce cholesterol in the
general population with the assumption that, overall, this will
reduce heart disease deaths. When we look at individuals, however,
it becomes clear that there are many people with high cholesterol
who have no heart disease and many people with heart
disease who have "normal" cholesterols. So, what is going on?
It turns out that the cholesterol picture is more complicated than
the public has been told, but experts are still looking at how to
apply this knowledge in a cost-effective manner across a large
population. Individuals, however, can take matters into their
own hands with the help of their physician and a nutritionist.
It turns out that not all "bad" LDL cholesterol is bad and not all
"good" HDL cholesterol is good. Each has a variety of forms
and, for both of these; it is only the small, dense forms that are
really the bad actors. What are called the large, fluffy forms
appear to have minimal, if any, negative effect in the case of
LDL and significant beneficial effect with HDL. Why is this
important? Nutritional factors can play a large role in determining
which forms predominate. In particular, a state of
insulin resistance, or what could be called "pre-diabetes,"
strongly favors the small, dense forms and this can be significantly
altered with nutritional therapy. A diet low in saturated
fat and sugar and high in fruits, vegetables, and fiber as well as
8 g
the beneficial fats found in fish oil, flax seeds, avocados and
especially olive oil along with regular aerobic exercise can
work to dramatically lower insulin resistance. The use of
niacin can also be very helpful but should only be done under
physician supervision due to potential liver toxicity issues.
There is a safer form of nutritional niacin called inositol
hexanicotinate but even this can cause liver irritation in some
people and should be monitored.
What you should know is that there are non-drug ways to
reduce inflammation. Nutritional research has long shown
that increased intake of processed carbohydrates and sugar, as
well as inadequate intake of essential fats, promotes inflammation.
The answer is, therefore, to reduce or eliminate intake
of "the whites," white flour and white sugar, and increase
intake of "good" fats, especially the omega-3 fats found in
fish, fish oils, flax, coconut oil and olive oil.
The last, and least known, risk factor that responds to non-drug
therapy is iron. It is a little known fact that iron overload is a
risk factor for heart disease. This is because iron rusts, i.e. oxidizes,
and as we noted above, excess oxidation increases heart
disease risk. Men and post-menopausal women are at particular
risk for iron overload from too much red meat and iron-fortified
foods like cereals and breads. Your iron status can be
checked by a simple blood test called a serum ferritin level.
While most labs will call anything in a range of around 20-380
"normal," it has been shown that a level of 200 doubles your
heart attack risk. An ideal level may be more like 50-85.
Salt and Cardiovascular Health
Some have suggested that since salt intakes are related to
blood pressure, and since cardiovascular risks are also related
to blood pressure, that, surely, salt intake levels are related
to cardiovascular risk. This is the "salt hypothesis" or "sodium
hypothesis." Salt is essential not only to life, but to good
health. Salt maintains the electrolyte balance inside and outside
of cells. Most of our salt comes from foods, some from
water. Doctors often recommend replacing water and salt lost
in exercise and when working outside. Wilderness hikers
know the importance of salt tablets to combat hyperthermia.
Oral rehydration involves replacing both water and salt.
While salt intake may need to be restricted/eliminated for
some people related to their medical diagnosis/disease, others
may actually need to increase their salt intake at certain times.
If you have restricted salt from your diet, you may need to
consider taking a iodine supplement. [Often found in multivitamins
but check label.] If you enjoy salt in your food, you
might not need to change your intake unless medically indicated
or recommended by your M.D.
Yom Kippur Food Drive
The need for food is greater than ever! According to Hunger
Solutions Minnesota, 1 in 10 Minnesotans relied on food
shelves for 60 million pounds of groceries in 2009. This is a
33% increase over the previous year. According to a new
Gallup survey, nearly 14% of Minnesotans faced a hunger
hardship in 2009. Our Yom Kippur Food Drive makes a significant
impact in helping several hundred families each year
with food at STEP. Our theme this year is "Fill an empty plate,
all of us can make a difference.”
Please take home one empty bag after Rosh Hashanah services
and try to bring back two bags filled with non-perishable
foods, beginning Friday, September 17th for the Yom Kippur
Food Drive. Let's show once again that Beth El cares about our
community.
Feed My Starving Children
Beth El volunteers packed food for starving children around the
world on July 13. A total of 11,520 meals were packed for children
of Haiti. Many thanks to the following volunteers: Artice
Silverman, Nechama, Shira and Shoshana Yardley, Jane
and Solomon Polansky, Ian Champion, Ben Weinshel, and
Dominic LeBlanc. The next opportunities to pack food at
FMSC (Chanhassen site, ages grade 3 and up) are Tuesdays,
September 28 and November 30 from 6:00-7:30p.m. For more
St. Louis Park Emergency
Program
Each day, so many people in the
Twin Cities go hungry. The St.
Louis Park Emergency Program (STEP) is a nonprofit
emergency assistance agency here in our community
that works hard to keep that from happening.
About 10% of the population of St. Louis Park now
visits STEP for food. STEP is open 5 days a week
and distributes more than a ton of food every day.
STEP has the largest kosher food shelf in our region
and people who live outside of St. Louis Park can
access this source of kosher food. No other food
shelf in our region provides the amount of kosher
food that STEP does, including kosher chicken,
salmon, and eggs. Of the food that STEP purchases,
25% is kosher; STEP spends $1,000 each month on
kosher poultry alone.
STEP has been operating in St. Louis Park since
1975, supported by gifts of cash and food primarily
from individuals and local congregations. With a
small staff of eight people and hundreds of volunteers
each week, STEP works to provide stability for
those experiencing times of crisis. Each client at
STEP is screened by and meets with a licensed social
worker at each visit. STEP also provides financial
assistance, school supplies, clothing and transportation
to households in need. STEP also has a
December holiday program that provides food to
households and gifts to children.
STEP is an agency truly helping the needy. Please
join STEP in fighting hunger and poverty by making
a cash gift, a gift of kosher food or a gift of toiletry
items.
STEP moved to a permanent home in May and is
raising funds through a capital campaign to purchase
it. Its new address is 6812 W. Lake Street, St. Louis
Park, MN 55426. Phone: 952-925-4899
Loaves & Fishes
The next opportunity to serve for Loaves and Fishes
serving is Tuesday, September 26. We provide a
Olshansky Family Gift to the
Congregational Nurse Program
Barbara Krupp, Healing Cabinet
Shayne Karasov, Community Relations HHC
The Olshansky family (David, Asya, Mark & Roman)
moved to St. Louis Park in 1989 from St. Petersburg,
Russia. Helped by many wonderful Jewish volunteers,
the Olshansky family was grateful for the assistance they
received upon restarting their lives as jews in America.
In 1994, they opened Home Health Care, Inc. (“HHC”)
with the goal of maintaining independence and improving
the lifestyles for people in need of home health care
in their residence.
“We wanted to operate the agency in a way that would
reflect how we would take care of our own family,” says
David Olshansky. “After 16 years of caring for the
requests of clients and their loved ones, we want to give
back to the very same community that helped us in our
time of need.”
In this same spirit of giving back to the community,
David Olshansky approached Rabbi Davis about wanting
to make a contribution to a meaningful program at
Beth El. He learned about the Congregational Nurse
program and met with Hadassah Zohara, shul nurse.
“After meeting with Hadassah, we were moved by the
caring work she does with congregants” stated David.
The Olshansky family felt that Hadassah’s work was a
good fit with the goals they had set for their own agency,
HHC. They have made a generous contribution of
$12000 to this program in the form of an unrestricted
fund. This means that this gift can be used immediately
to offset the cost of running this program for this year’s
synagogue budget.
HHC has always wanted to play a positive role in the
Beth El community and the Jewish community at large.
Beth El has a congregational nurse that serves and visits
congregants in need of support. Home Health Care
believes in congregational nursing and is happy to know
that Beth El has the largest congregational nursing program
in the country. By keeping people safe at home and
preventing unnecessary hospitalizations HHC became
the number one company in Minnesota based on
Medicare’s twelve service indicators. HHC hopes to be
an available resource for Beth El congregants.
Beth El is grateful to the Olshansky family for their very
generous gift and looks forward to many years of working
together. David Olshansky regularly attends services
on Shabbat, so please say hello to him when you see him.
Introducing MSP Kosher
To ensure that a restaurant or food establishment
is kosher, it is placed under the supervision of a
rabbi or a Kosher Supervision Agency. Although
there are several agencies in the Twin Cities
(Minnesota Kosher, Blue Ribbon Kosher, United
Mehadrin Kosher, etc), there is new agency in
town: MSP Kosher.
Because the Kosher Supervision Agencies (hashgahot)
serve as the livelihood for many of those
involved in each agency, kosher supervision
often is a fee-based service, and at times, can be
a relatively high-priced fee-based service. This can add to the high
costs of Kosher food, as well as exacerbate the dearth of kosher food
options. Additionally, sometimes, the role, practice and standards of
the kosher supervisor (mashgiah) are relatively nebulous to the consumer.
MSP Kosher was established to address some of these challenges. The
primary goals of MSP Kosher are three-fold: (1) to increase the quantity
of supervised kosher establishments and foodstuffs in the Twin
Cities; (2) to provide strict Kosher supervision free-of-charge, and
reduce the costs of kosher foodstuffs in the Twin Cities; and (3) to offer
transparency in kashrut supervision.
Rabbi Olitzky is the Director of Supervision for MSP Kosher, and has
been working with other community rabbis to get this agency off the
ground.
You may have heard that Sebastian Joe’s now offers select kosher flavors
of Ice Cream and Sorbet, and the owners were at Beth El's Tikkun
Leyl Shavuot to scoop their favorites. MSP Kosher provides Sebastian
Joe’s with their Kosher supervision. Kosher flavors are available at
both the Franklin Avenue and Linden Hills locations. For a complete
list of kosher flavors, please visit http://www.mspkosher.org/businesses/sebastian-joes/
and click the respective “view teudah” link. The
standards of supervision are also explained on that page.
MSP Kosher has also brought another kosher establishment
to the twin cities. In Edina (7015
Amundson Ave), Seven Stars Coffee House opened
last month. Seven Stars is a new Kosher dairy café,
offering candies, baked goods, sandwiches, salads,
soups, ice cream and of course coffee. Visit
And now that they too are kosher, any of the kosher
flavors from Sebastian Joe's, and essentially anything
from Seven Stars Coffee House can be brought
into Beth El and served at various functions or celebrations
(s'mahot). And this is just another benefit
of what MSP Kosher is bringing to the Twin Cities.
establishments over the coming weeks and months.
“Freedom Song”: Acclaimed Musical Illustrates a Family’s Struggle with Addiction & Recovery
Join us Tuesday, August 17th at the Sabes JCC, from 7-9:00 p.m. for "Freedom Song,"
a musical influenced by the Broadway that will wow you and a story that will pull at
your heartstrings. Set during Passover, the plot is the perfect metaphor for the slavery
to addiction that many Jews and non-Jews experience. What makes "Freedom Song"
even more powerful is its performers - all of them are current or former residents of
Beit T'Shuvah, a recovery program based in Los Angeles. This FREE performance
with a discussion afterward is co-sponsored by Shirley and Larry Zipkin and their
generous friends, Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis, and Sabes
JCC. The American Jewish World is a media sponsor.
Having a Sukkah is FUN!
Enjoy fall meals outside! You, your friends,
your kids (and grandkids) will love it and it’s
EASY! A few years ago, Beth El member
Jack Burke z’l had a dream. He wanted everyone
to be able to enjoy a sukkah and he
designed one that is both inexpensive (roughly
$250 depending on size) and easy to
assemble. The walls are made of fabric, the
frame is lightweight metal poles, and the kit
requires minimal storage space. Hundreds of
these kits are in use all over the country. For
more information call Ellen Sue Parker at
