<strong>Greyhound</strong>s test positive for drugs at <strong>Texas</strong> tracks<br />

Between January 2007 and November 2012, GREY2K <strong>USA</strong> received state records show<strong>in</strong>g 39 cases<br />

where rac<strong>in</strong>g greyhounds tested positive for prohibited substances. These drugs <strong>in</strong>cluded proca<strong>in</strong>e 50 ,<br />

theobrom<strong>in</strong>e 51 , caffe<strong>in</strong>e 52 , sulfadimethox<strong>in</strong>e 53 , polyethylene glycol 54 , and flunix<strong>in</strong>. 55<br />

<strong>Greyhound</strong>s at <strong>Texas</strong> tracks are fed 4-D meat as a way to reduce cost<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the <strong>in</strong>dustry handbook Care of the <strong>Rac<strong>in</strong>g</strong> and Retired <strong>Greyhound</strong>, greyhound tra<strong>in</strong>ers<br />

rout<strong>in</strong>ely use “4-D” meat from dy<strong>in</strong>g, diseased, disabled, and dead animals. 56 This meat is used<br />

because “it is the most ec<strong>on</strong>omically feasible for the <strong>Greyhound</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry at this time.” 57 To discourage<br />

human use, 4-D meat c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s denatured charcoal. 58<br />
