for Nursing’s Future.” They use 

inspirational media messages to 

build awareness of the program, 

designed to ease the nursing 

shortage and support the nursing 

profession. 

You do not have to look very far in 

order to find another special nursing 

program. The Tri-C Nursing 

School at Parma Hospital is a 

partnership between Parma Hospital 

and Cuyahoga Community College 

Western Campus. It supports the 

ongoing development of nurses.

Foundation supporters helped 

bring the school into being. Not 

only has their philanthropy helped 

alleviate some of the Hospital’s 

nursing shortage, it has made a 

profound difference in many lives: 

the nurses and those who receive 

their care. The school has inspired 

other donors, including staff in 

other hospital departments to fund 

raise for educational scholarships. 

Nursing is a Trusted Profession 

A new Gallup poll suggests that nursing is one of 

the top-ranked professions for the 11th time in the 

last 12 years. The basis for this conclusion is that 

eight in 10 Americans rate the honesty and ethical 

standards of nurses as high or very high in its 

“Honesty and Ethics” survey. Other fields ranking 

well include: military officers, pharmacists, grade 

school teachers and medical doctors.

The Tri-C Nursing School is a family affair 

The nursing school experience was deeply personal for Diane 

Frederick and Carrie Kraft. This mother and daughter team of 

Parma Hospital employees graduated together in 2008. Diane and 

her daughter Carrie have worked at Parma Hospital for years. Both 

women are deeply committed to the hospital and its philosophy of 

care and both bring breadth of knowledge and experience to their 

practice. 

Diane has served Parma Hospital in several departments starting 

with central transport as a dispatcher. She worked in surgical 

services as an operating room scheduler and clerical support person. 

She also worked in the IT department, the intensive care unit and the 

9 th floor. Diane currently works in the Heart Center. 

Carrie began her work for Parma Hospital when she was 16 years 

old in food and nutrition services. She then became the secretary for 

9 West and several other patient care areas. 

Thank you, donors, for investing in the development of people like 

Diane and Carrie. Your investment continues to grow in value 

through their work and the work of other dedicated nurses.

Discovering new ways to care for each stage of life: the Hospice Model 

The early modern hospital provided 

a place for rest, respite and personal 

care for the sick. As scientific 

knowledge about human health 

expanded, hospitals focused their 

work on the practice of medicine 

and nursing care. 

The hospital eventually grew into 

the model we recognize today 

incorporating diagnostic, technical, 

therapeutic and other direct patient 

care and support services. The 

specialized knowledge and training 

provided by the various health care 

disciplines collectively provides 

effective treatments, cures and the 

easing of human suffering. Hospital 

services also support people 

through joyous events such as the 

birth of a child. 

As 20 th century Hospitals evolved 

in western culture, one aspect of 

care was lost—care for the dying. 

The alarming number of people 

dying alone in hospitals became a 

major concern. It motivated others 

to find better ways to care for 

individuals with limited life 

expectancies. 

Dr. Cicely Saunders is considered 

to be the founder of the modern 

hospice movement. She worked for 

more than 10 years building a 

worldwide community of people 

dedicated to discovering 

compassionate ways to care for 

people with life limiting 

circumstances. 

St. Christopher’s Hospice opened 

in 1967 as the first modern 

residential hospice in south 

London. Since then the hospice 

movement has grown in many 

countries including the United 

States. The Hospice mission was 

built on these core values: 

• Patient-centered, holistic care; 

• Open and honest communication; 

• Individualized care plans; 

• Quality of life. 

Other elements central to the original 

hospice vision were: 

• A beautiful, homelike atmosphere; 

• Inclusion of family and friends in 

the lives of patients; 

• Comfort care, specifically pain 

and acute symptom management; 

• Supporting meaningful life 

regardless of the limitation on its 

length. 

The vision for compassionate Care 

In this Community 

Parma Hospital built one of the first residential 

Hospice facilities in southwest Cuyahoga County. 

Seasons of Life Residential Hospice expanded Parma 

Hospital’s hospice care program to include a residential 

facility as an option. The facility was made possible with 

donor support. 

Seasons of Life Residential Hospice Memorial Walkway Project 

A Celebration of Life - The 3 rd Annual Dedication 

On October 7, 2010, about 60 people gathered to dedicate the memorial bricks 

and tree purchased in memory of loved ones since the 2009 dedication. The 

Foundation extends thanks to all of the families and donors who continue to 

beautify the grounds and the facility of Seasons of Life Residential Hospice. 

Your support strengthens the entire hospice care process, both in the homes of 

families and in the residential facility.

“My wife, Doris, and I have supported the Parma Hospital Health Care Foundation 

with our money for past twenty years, and I have served on its Board of Trustees for 

the same period of time. We also support our church and several schools. We have 

learned that a charitable person is someone who has an "attitude of gratitude" and 

who is willing to share his or her money and time with charitable organizations that 

try to make our community a better place to live. We believe that the Parma Hospital 

Health Care Foundation is such a charitable organization, worthy of support, as it 

tries to help our community.” –Wendel Willmann 

Wendel also serves on Parma Hospital’s prayer breakfast committee. The prayer 

breakfast is a 21 year old annual tradition that brings together hundreds of people in 

community fellowship.

Philanthropy Day lunch and awards program November 5, 2010 at LaCentre in Westlake.

During 2010 Bill and Melinda 

Gates and Warren Buffet 

challenged fellow billionaires 

from the United States and other parts of the world to 

join them in donating half or more of their wealth to 

charity. As of this writing, 57 of the wealthiest families 

in the United States have made the pledge. 

There are many reasons for this. Sometimes the wealthy 

feel overwhelmed by all of the philanthropic 

expectations placed on them. However, the state of 

heart and state of mind are so important for charitable 

giving to occur at any level. 

Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet recognize 

there are a lot of ways to give outside of their challenge. 

They see far more potential donors beyond the people 

they currently focus on. And, they hope that by issuing 

this challenge, they will increase awareness and 

participation in philanthropy at all levels in order to 

build a better world. 

The Gateses and Buffet learned that persuading people 

to give is not always easy regardless of how wealthy 

they are. While it is reported that there are several 

hundred super wealthy families in the United States, 

evidently they differ greatly in how they lean toward 

charitable giving.

The Parma Hospital Cancer Center team 

considers the care of the whole person, 

body, mind and spirit, integral to their 

mission. This philosophy is reflected in 

the work of Certified Breast Care Nurse, 

Jessica Young, who reflects, “We try to 

provide comfort, support and education in 

a special way.” One way is by creating 

personalized gift bags for women 

whose breast surgery requires 

Caring well for the person who has been diagnosed with cancer goes 

beyond radiation and chemotherapy. It involves supporting the heart and 

mind of the human being who has heard the words, “you have cancer.” 

Caring also includes emotional, educational and sometimes material 

support to help strengthen the mind, body and spirit of the whole person. 

It requires a shift in perspective so that we understand the individual 

facing cancer not as a “cancer patient” but rather, as a unique and 

valuable individual who is taking a tough journey right now.
