BATTLES came together in New York in 2002 drawing together disparate strands of
hardcore, avant garde tonal minimalism, neo-classical, techno and post rock, featuring
drummer John Stanier (Helmet), guitarists Ian Williams (Don Caballero) and Dave
Konopka (Lynx) and Tyondai Braxton. After a string of EPs, the group signed to Warp and
released their debut Mirrored, the success of which was immediate and profound.

During the winter of 2009, Battles decamped to the Machines with Magnets studio in
Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to start work on a follow up. They recorded nearly an entire
album, and by Autumn 2010 were ready to start mixing when things came off the rails. It
was at this point that Braxton realized he just couldn’t commit to the overwhelming touring
schedule that was due to follow the release of their much anticipated second album and
quit the band.
The existence of Battles revolves around one key construct: that Battles as a whole is
greater than the sum of its parts...even if those parts all happened to be particularly
beautifully constructed and intricately interlocking. Battles was bigger than any four of
them individually and would continue. With Braxton gone they began the unenviable
process of unweaving all of his parts from the whole in order to construct something
entirely new from what remained.
It is true that Gloss Drop is a bewitching, entrancing album that defies both
categorization and easy analysis. Just as Mirrored was a massive leap on from the early
EPs that first got them noticed, this is truly another seismic shift, propelling them once
more into uncharted territory. It is a sheer sense of fun, unpredictability and inventiveness
that sets Battles apart from every other contemporary group. Stanier sums this up
succinctly: “I don’t think challenging, new music has to be super serious all the time.
That’s really boring to me and pushing boundaries should not be boring.”
While other acts are content to deal in revivalism or stasis, Battles are still looking for
far-off boundaries to study and then demolish, searching for new and exotic styles to
mesh together. Stanier concludes: “When we’re writing songs, no one in this group has
ever said ‘Wait, we’ve gone too far. This isn’t a Battles song.’ Because what is a Battles
song? We don’t know. All I know is that there are no parameters and no boundaries. That
is the whole point and has been since day one.”

David Gogo – Soul Bender
2011 has already seen David Gogo tour Canada, the US and Europe
relentlessly. In between it all, this hard-travelled, virtuosic bluesman has
produced a sizzling, hard rocking blues album that is filled with heavy
grooves, grit and emotion.
Gogo’s string of accomplishments is impressive; three Juno Nominations,
two-time Maple Blues Guitarist of the Year, WCMA Musician of the Year and
Saturday Night Blues’ Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime
contribution to the blues in Canada. Soul Bender is a good bet to add even
more kudos to that list.
Opening with Elmore James’ classic blues shuffle ‘Please Find My Baby’ and
closing with Procol Harum’s ‘Whiskey Train’ Soul Bender features five original
songs, and five covers, all benefiting from David’s unique interpretation.
Recorded in his hometown of Nanaimo Soul Bender is another important

The Pissed Off Wild started as a beer, went around like
reefer, and ended up passed out in the backyard under the
picnic table with a empty quart of whiskey clutched in its
hands and a huge smile on its face. All punk rock attitude,
black humor and a rhythm section that just won't quit,
these boys make The Supremes look like a bunch of chicks.
The Pissed Off Wild was named for the state you get into
when you are so Frustrated, that all you can do is shake
your fist with fury and let people know that you are:

Featuring Josh Martinez on vocals, Kenton Loewen
(drums), Pete Schmitt (bass), and Jesse Waldman on guitar,
deez guys are tearing the roof off every show they play.

Black Keys, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Black Flag,
