word in the sentence<br />

Compound <strong>Prepositions</strong><br />
• Definition- some prepositional phrases<br />
have more than one word <strong>and</strong> are<br />
separated; look at chart on page 402<br />

Prepositional Phrases<br />
• Definition- group of words that includes a<br />
preposition <strong>and</strong> a noun or pronoun;<br />
generally object of the preposition is the<br />
noun or pronoun that follows preposition<br />
• Most prepositional phrases contain 2 or 3<br />
words but some may be longer depending<br />
on number of words modifying the object<br />
<strong>and</strong> length of the preposition.<br />

• Remember: prepositions always have<br />
objects; adverbs do not.<br />

Correlative Conjunction<br />
• Connect similar words or groups of word;<br />
appear in pairs though<br />
◦ Examples: both…<strong>and</strong>; neither…nor;<br />
whether…or; either…or; not only…but also
Subordinating <strong>Conjunctions</strong><br />
• Connect two complete ideas by making<br />
one of the ideas subordinate<br />
◦ Look at box of eamples
Subordinating Conjunction or<br />
Preposition?<br />
• After, before, since, till, <strong>and</strong> until can be both<br />
subordinating conjunction or prepositions.<br />
If being used as a subordinating<br />
conjunction, connects two complete<br />
ideas; if preposition must have an object<br />
<strong>and</strong> be in a prepositional phrase.<br />

Conjunctive Adverbs<br />
• Adverb that acts as a conjunction to<br />
connect complete ideas; often times used<br />
as a transition.<br />
