Chinese White Dolphins
香 港 大 學 生 物 科 學 學 院 的 賈 力 誠 博 士 介 紹 香 港 中 華 白 海 豚 及 其 他 物 種 的 保 育 , 他 又 分 享 了 珠 江 三 角 洲
的 中 華 白 海 豚 數 量 以 每 年 2.46% 的 驚 人 速 度 減 少 , 意 味 現 時 74% 的 中 華 白 海 豚 有 機 會 在 60 年 內 消 失 。
Dr. Leszek Karczmarski from The University of Hong Kong’s School of Biological Sciences introduced the
Hong Kong perspective on the conservation of Chinese white dolphin and other species. He also shared
his research findings which indicated that populations of Chinese white dolphin in the Pearl River Estuary
are declining at an alarming rate of 2.46% annually, meaning as much as 74% of current numbers will
likely be lost within 60 years.

Dr. Louisa Ponnampalam from University of Malaya started her project in 2010 in Langkawi, Malaysia.
She combines science and community as platforms of discovery for research and conservation.

Guest speaker Dr. Samuel Hung, Chairman of Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society, shared his
long-term monitoring of Chinese white dolphins in Hong Kong, and the implications for conservation
and management.

OPCFHK’s Ms Shadow Sin introduced the Foundation’s projects across Asia, and updated audience
members on the progress of our marine mammal stranding response programme in Hong Kong waters
since 2005.

Guest speaker Dr. Robert L. Brownell Jr., National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shared his
efforts since 1995 to conserve the critically endangered Western gray whale in Russia.
保 育 基 金 副 總 監 吳 守 堅 先 生 總 結 研 討 會 時 強 調 , 我 們 有 迫 切 需 要 立 即 採 取 行 動 保 育 中 華 白 海 豚 。 我 們
已 訂 出 一 項 五 年 計 劃 , 透 過 標 準 化 科 學 研 究 方 法 、 能 力 培 訓 及 提 高 公 眾 意 識 , 整 合 地 區 各 項 保 育 工
作 , 確 保 香 港 及 鄰 近 水 域 的 中 華 白 海 豚 種 群 的 可 持 續 性 。
OPCFHK’s Deputy Director Mr. Timothy Ng concluded the symposium with a highlight on the urgent
need for immediate action to conserve the Chinese white dolphin. We have developed a five-year plan
to consolidate regional efforts to help ensure the sustainability of Chinese white dolphin populations
in Hong Kong and neighbouring waters through standardising scientific research techniques, capacity
building and public awareness campaigns.
