potrà pregiarsi ed ogni estero valersi per esaminare ed<br />

approfittarsene <strong>de</strong>lla pregevole antichità, e fec<strong>on</strong>dità <strong>de</strong>lla<br />

Lingua Punico-Maltese. 52<br />

De Soldanis went <strong>on</strong> to say that his Maltese alphabet<br />

had not <strong>on</strong>ly been accepted locally but also commen<strong>de</strong>d<br />

by foreign men of letters. We quote here from a few letters<br />

addressed to him. L’Abate Stefano Borgia, Secretary of<br />

the Acca<strong>de</strong>mia and later raised to the dignity of Cardinal,<br />

became a close friend in 1752. 53 He was full of admirati<strong>on</strong><br />

for <strong>de</strong> Soldanis’ works and augured him a lasting fame with<br />

other established literary pers<strong>on</strong>alities of that time. This is<br />

what he wrote <strong>on</strong> him:<br />

Seguito la lettura <strong>de</strong>lle vostre opere, benchè c<strong>on</strong> qualche lentezza,<br />

e vi assicuro che se seguiterete la via intrapresa farete gran<br />

giovamento alla Repubblica Letteraria, e v’immortalarete come<br />

Gori, Passeri, Maffei, Olivieri, ed altri celeberrimi Letterati, poichè<br />

restituire al M<strong>on</strong>do una Lingua, che apportavagli grandissimi<br />

vantaggi, quale si è la Punica, come à fatto l’Etrusca per mezzo<br />

<strong>de</strong>’ sopra<strong>de</strong>tti valentissimi. 54<br />
