This was the beginning of etruscology but, what is more<br />

important for our argument, it inspired <strong>de</strong> Soldanis and set him<br />

<strong>on</strong> his course as the promoter of the two chief characteristics<br />

of Malta’s nati<strong>on</strong>al i<strong>de</strong>ntity, history and language. To reach both<br />

these ends the can<strong>on</strong>, in his testament dated 14 April 1768, left<br />

500 scudi so that with their interest a literary aca<strong>de</strong>my would<br />

be set up, un<strong>de</strong>r the name of Agiusiana. Meetings were to be<br />

held at the nati<strong>on</strong>al library, the last <strong>on</strong>e of each year being<br />

appropriately <strong>de</strong>dicated to the ‘Punic-Maltese’ language and<br />

some aspect of Maltese history. 28<br />

In Malta, historical investigati<strong>on</strong> had been <strong>de</strong>ad for the<br />

last hundred years, since the publicati<strong>on</strong> of Della Descritti<strong>on</strong>e<br />

di Malta by commendatore Fra Gio. Francesco Abela in 1647.<br />

De Soldanis c<strong>on</strong>templated issuing a new editi<strong>on</strong> of the<br />

book with historical and critical annotati<strong>on</strong>s. 29 Giuseppe<br />

Giacomo Testaferrata, another erudite of the period, would<br />

have liked to do this work, too. He had the backing of<br />

Paciaudi, who had first put the i<strong>de</strong>a into his head. 30 He was<br />

a relative of Abela while Count Ciantar, the corresp<strong>on</strong><strong>de</strong>nt<br />

of Muratori and the Sicilian Ant<strong>on</strong>io M<strong>on</strong>gitore, 31 had eye<br />
