Discover Cape Breton Island
Cape Breton Island
Brace yourself because you are about to be blown away.
From the highlands soaring above the Cabot Trail to the
sun rising over the waters of the Bras d’Or Lakes to the
splendour of the Margaree Valley’s incomparable salmon
rivers, there’s a heart-stopping view around almost every
corner of this fabled place. And natural beauty is simply
the backdrop to the vacation experience of a lifetime that
Cape Breton offers up. The Cabot Trail, one of the world’s
most scenic drives, takes you from the charm of Baddeck
(Nirvana for sailors, paddlers, and arts & crafts-seeking
shoppers) through the Highlands to the Acadian village
of Chéticamp. Eagles, whales, seals and moose keep you
company along the way. As for the golf, well, just mention
the Fabulous Four and watch your fellow golfer’s eyes well
up with envy. History lives at the Fortress of Louisbourg,
the largest reconstruction of its kind in North America,
and the Celtic heritage of the island is in full swing at the
Highland Village Museum, the Gaelic College and
Highland Village. Then there's the music – Cape Breton is
where many of the world’s finest Celtic musicians come
from, and they sure do like to party. One visit to Cape
Breton and you’ll understand why it was named the #1
island in continental North America to visit by Travel and
Fly Fishing on the Margaree River
Discovering hearty highland greetings
These are legendary lands. Legendary for being the
homeland to generation after generation of world-class
musicians. Legendary for the living Celtic culture that
abounds in these parts. Legendary for the salmon fishing
and for the simply stunning scenery that unfolds before
you at every turn in the road. Legendary for great parties –
although we tend to use the Gaelic word for party – it’s a
bit like a secret password, but read on and we’ll let you in!
Once you cross the causeway and hang a left at Port Hastings
to begin your 100 kilometre (that’s 60 miles for our
Imperial-system friends) journey, you’ll become part of
the legend yourself. Climb the mountains. Swim in the
sparkling waters. Learn to stepdance. Taste the only
single malt whiskey made in Canada. Hike the shores of
breathtaking Lake Ainslie. And when your friends ask
how your vacation was, you can answer with one word:
Legendary.
Cape Breton Celtic Music
Interpretive Centre
Celtic music has been a part of the very soul of Judique
since the day almost 250 years ago when the beauty of
Cape Breton inspired Michael mor Macdonald to pen
what is believed to be the first Gaelic song written in
North America. Some of Canada’s most influential and
beloved Celtic musicians have called Judique home,
and the family trees of most of the others can be traced
back this way.
Today Judique is, appropriately, home to the Cape Breton
Celtic Music Interpretive Centre. Here you’ll find the
School of Fiddling, workshops by master musicians, an
in- depth archive, music demonstrations, exhibits, and
an uncommon number of ceilidhs and musical celebrations
taking place. If you listen carefully, you just might
hear the ghost of Michael mor MacDonald humming
his favourite tune.
