15K, 5K AND KIDS’ FUN RUN SEPTEMBER 27, 2008
Dear Friends
Thank you for your faithful support of the Miracle Miles 15K, 5K and Kids’ Fun Run. Little did I know that my
vision 10 years ago of an athletic event to benefit our tiniest patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at
Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies would grow to what it has become today!
10th Annual
I invite you to join us on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Arnold Palmer Medical Center campus as we celebrate
the 10th anniversary of Miracle Miles. In 2007, Miracle Miles sponsors and participants collaboratively raised more
than $63,500 to support our capital campaign and medical equipment needs in our NICU.
Last year more than 14,000 babies were born at Winnie Palmer Hospital, and of those, 1,635 of them were born at
various degrees of gestation or with health challenges at birth. While most have a healthy start to life, others struggle
with their fragile grip on life for days – sometimes even months. Our team of dedicated specialists works around the
clock to provide clinical expertise utilizing state-of-the art equipment, diagnostic approaches and medication therapies.
We are all proud of the growth of this event, and this is just the beginning! It is for these tiny babies that we once
again ask for your support to help these little miracles have the best start in life.
Sincerely,
Gregor Alexander, MD
BENEFICIARY
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Each year, nearly 1,300 babies are admitted to the NICU at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women &
Babies. Our staff of neonatologists, advanced practitioners and nurses are available 24 hours a day,
seven days a week. The NICU proudly maintains a 96 percent survival rate of our neonatal admissions.
Described below are highlights of the life-saving equipment that Miracles Miles has helped fund.
10th Annual
Born 13 weeks early, Pierson weighed
1 pound 5.8 ounces.
Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
ECMO is the most advanced method of life-support in the NICU. ECMO provides
oxygen to the body when the lungs and/or heart are too sick to do the job, allowing
them to “rest” so they can develop or repair. Recovery of lung/heart function
usually occurs within a few days, but might require up to a month of treatment.
Winnie Palmer Hospital is one of only four ECMO hospitals in the state and one of only 100 centers in the world. The NICU
is equipped with four ECMO units and will treat approximately 10-12 neonates each year as well as 1-2 pediatric patients.
The purchase price of a complete ECMO machine is $134,000 and requires around the clock monitoring by a qualified
medical professional.
High-Frequency Ventilator (HFV)
Babies who are too small or sick to breathe on their own are connected to a fast-breathing ventilator. The high-frequency
oscillating ventilator is frequently used before ECMO. This therapy typically keeps about half of the ECMO candidates from
going on ECMO and is recommended for 3-4 babies per month.
Each high-frequency ventilator costs about $25,000. In Winnie Palmer Hospital’s NICU, at least two machines are required
daily. This form of treatment is very costly, but is a proven method for helping tiny babies beat the odds.
Pierson is now a happy, smiling
toddler.
The Right Place at the Right Time
The lights were dim as all eyes focused on the black and white image. At first, it looked like static from a poor
television connection, but then the image sharpened. “You’re having twins!” The words echoed as Tshai and
Erick Knowles stared at the two dark circles that represented the newest additions to their family. They didn’t
know whether to laugh or cry, or do both.
10th Annual
The family watched as mom’s belly grew, and her obstetrician closely monitored her high blood pressure. At one
of her checkups, an ultrasound showed that the little boy was not getting enough blood to continue to grow. He
threatened the life of his twin sister.
Immediately, Tshai came to Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, but it was too early to deliver the
twins – they were just over six months along. Doctors performed ultrasounds every few hours as they monitored
them. She could not bear the thought of losing her son. Then her little girl began to decline.
The doctors explained that the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offered the best chance of survival for the babies. Tshai was relieved that
at this point the NICU could offer her twins the specialized care – that even as their mother – she could not give them.
More than two months early, Audrey was born weighing 2 pounds 3 ounces, while Daniel weighed only 1 pound 9 ounces. Neonatologist David
Auerbach, MD, and the NICU team immediately began caring for the tiny babies.
Under their care, Audrey and Daniel began to grow. Within two months, they were ready to join the rest of their family. Now, Audrey and
Daniel can hardly sit still; they are crawling and pulling themselves up. Every family hopes for a healthy baby. For Tshai and Erick, one was
not enough. Thanks to the Winnie Palmer Hospital NICU, they went home with two.

2007 Event Summary
On September 29, 2007, 1,825 dedicated athletes crowded the streets surrounding Winnie Palmer Hospital for
Women & Babies for the 9th Annual Miracle Miles 15K, 5K and Kids’ Fun Run presented by Chick-fil-A.
at Miracle Miles
2007
Before sunrise, runners gathered for the 15K sponsored by Pediatrix Medical Group, the physician practice
caring for the tiny babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Central Florida Healthcare Federal
Credit Union kicked off the Opening Ceremony with a few words before the pre-run warm up led by Chickfil-A
cow cheerleaders and staff from the Orlando Regional Wellness Center. Former neonatal graduate and
eight time female winner of Miracle Miles, Michelle Kendall-Krueger, sang the national anthem and later assisted
other NICU graduates distribute awards sponsored by IKON Office Solutions. The top 15K male and female
winners were thrilled to receive a TAG Heuer watch generously donated by Tharoo & Company, The Jewelry
Boutique. Special thanks to our other lead sponsors Robins & Morton, Sam’s Club, The Vaughn Group/Clark
Consulting, UBS Financial Services, Abbott Laboratories and Ovation Pharmaceuticals for their support of our 2007 event.
More than 200 young athletes received a medal and a hug from Shamu for participating in the Kids’ Fun Run sponsored by SeaWorld
Orlando – showing that they are also BIG supporters of tiny babies.
Spectators, families and friends joined the runners in post-race festivities including refreshments from Chick-fil-A, Rainforest Café,
Gooding’s Catering, Panda Express and Coca Cola. UBS Financial Services brought out the child in all by providing balloon art and
refreshing snow cones. Little faces were transformed into glittery princesses and baby cows by Enjoy Your Face while others got creative
at the Kiddy Dough station sponsored by Pediatrix Medical Group. Runners and spectators alike were invited to enjoy a complimentary
massage courtesy of the Orlando Regional Wellness Center. While crossing the finish line of the 15K was a milestone for many, Miracle
Miles celebrates the fact that every day is a milestone in the life of a preemie!
