It began with a promise….<br />

Isn’t that how many truly great,<br />

noble accomplishments begin?<br />

My thoughts turn to the visionary<br />

community leaders who promised<br />

to build Arnold Palmer Hospital<br />

for the children of Central Florida;<br />

our commitment to Arnold Palmer<br />

that “good” would never be “good<br />

enough” and our donors, who<br />

generously pledge to support<br />

our mission.<br />

In this particular instance, it began<br />

with a promise from a father to his<br />

dying son.<br />

T.J., a 17-year-old high school<br />

student, was battling leukemia. He<br />

asked his father, music industry<br />

executive Tony Martell, to raise a<br />

million dollars for cancer research<br />

so that “no one else will have<br />

to experience what I am going<br />

through.”<br />

Although Tony had no fundraising<br />

experience, he agreed. Two years<br />

later T.J. passed away, and Tony<br />

set forth on his journey to fulfill<br />

the promise he had made to his<br />

son. Over the years, Tony has been<br />

joined by hundreds of volunteers<br />

and musician friends, including Ella<br />

Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman and<br />

Duke Ellington, who have worked<br />

passionately to help raise more<br />

than $250 million for treatment<br />

and research – far surpassing T.J.’s<br />

million dollar dream.<br />

T.J.’s selfless thoughts for others<br />

– people he would never know<br />

– set into motion a vision that<br />

would captivate the hearts and<br />

imaginations of countless others.<br />

His story has brought together<br />

some of the most well-known and<br />

accomplished recording artists,<br />

entertainment executives and,<br />

most recently, legendary golfer<br />

Arnold Palmer who was chosen<br />

by the T.J. Martell Foundation as<br />

the honoree of the 2011 Lifetime<br />

Achievement Award.<br />

As I traveled to New York to attend<br />

the awards gala, I could not help<br />

but reflect on how one measures a<br />

life well-lived. Is it determined by<br />

how far we climb in our careers?<br />

Fame and fortune? The material<br />

possessions we accumulate?<br />

Perhaps it is as simple as linking<br />

our personal passion, our life’s<br />

work, and the resulting fruits<br />

to ultimately benefit people for<br />

generations into the future.<br />

Within every person there is a story.<br />

Something meaningful that has<br />

touched and inspired them to make<br />

a difference for others through<br />

their gifts of time, talent, fortune<br />

or influence. Whether born from<br />

sorrow or the wings of inspiration,<br />

the resulting promises are reassuring<br />

– they evoke feelings of anticipation<br />

and good things to come.<br />

We are honored to know and be<br />

able to share a few of these stories<br />

in the following pages. From<br />

the Chatlos Foundation that is<br />

empowering our tiniest, most<br />

vulnerable patients in the Neonatal<br />

Intensive Care Unit to begin life<br />

as strong and healthy as possible<br />

(page 4); to Runway To Hope,<br />

the Give Hope Foundation and<br />

<strong>Orlando</strong> Calling that are focused<br />

on easing the plight of children<br />

affected by cancer; to those who<br />

make planned gifts through their<br />

wills or trusts (Heritage Circle,<br />

page 17); to the many others who<br />

are actively making a difference in<br />

their own way for those who we<br />

serve at <strong>Orlando</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />

May they encourage you to<br />

pause and consider how others<br />

may have made your own way<br />

a little smoother, and perhaps<br />

how you may do the same…as I<br />

am choosing to do in this spring<br />

season of renewal.<br />

In the city where people dream of seeing their names in<br />

lights, Arnold Palmer’s name shone brightly as he was<br />

recognized for his more than two decades of work in<br />

building Arnold Palmer Medical Center. The nationallyknown<br />

T.J. Martell Foundation awarded Mr. Palmer with<br />

the Lifetime Philanthropic Award at their annual gala<br />

in November, in front of a room full of celebrities and<br />

dignitaries. This award comes just months after Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital received its first grant from the T.J.<br />

Martell Foundation to support pediatric cancer research<br />

happening in <strong>Orlando</strong>.<br />

Rucker, presented the award<br />

to Mr. Palmer, sharing his own<br />

personal story of how Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital recently<br />

helped his young niece, Karli,<br />

battle a form of cancer.<br />

During the event, held at<br />

the Marriott Marquis Times<br />

Square in New York, several<br />

awards were bestowed on<br />

entertainment and business<br />

leaders while raising a<br />

record $1.3 million for cancer research. Among the other<br />

celebrities in attendance were daytime television icon,<br />

Susan Lucci, Grammy-winning country group Rascal Flatts,<br />

Donald Trump, and Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas.<br />

Rucker performed two songs for the crowd, including a<br />

Frank Sinatra song dedicated to Mr. Palmer.<br />

The T.J. Martell Foundation has been a driving force<br />

nationally for leukemia, cancer and AIDS research. The<br />

foundation has given over $250 million for these causes,<br />

primarily through their partner hospitals and research<br />

facilities. In 2011, Arnold Palmer Medical Center joined<br />

the elite list of only eleven partner hospitals in the<br />

country, which includes The Mayo Clinic, Memorial<br />

Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Massachusetts General<br />

Hospital Cancer Center and The University of Texas<br />

MD Anderson Cancer Center.<br />

As a designated research facility Arnold Palmer Medical<br />

Center was awarded $50,000 from the T.J. Martell<br />

Foundation in April 2011. The grant will help the<br />

hospital continue performing research and developing<br />

innovative cancer treatments and protocols. We are proud<br />

to be recognized by the T.J. Martell Foundation for the<br />

groundbreaking work occurring each day at Arnold Palmer<br />

Medical Center.<br />

The Chatlos family has held a long tradition of<br />

generous philanthropic leadership at <strong>Orlando</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong>. Over the years, their significant gifts<br />

to our organization have helped provide lifesaving<br />

care in many areas including the Level<br />

One Trauma Center at <strong>Orlando</strong> Regional<br />

Medical Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center<br />

<strong>Orlando</strong> and Arnold Palmer Hospital.<br />

Earlier this year, when the conversation turned<br />

to our urgent need to expand capacity within<br />

the Alexander Center for Neonatology at<br />

Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies,<br />

the response from our friends was swift. The<br />

Chatlos Foundation pledged a gift of $100,000<br />

to support enhancements to the delivery of<br />

care for our tiniest patients.<br />

foundation feel very blessed that we are able to<br />

support life-saving healthcare in our community.”<br />

Runway to Hope Pledges $1 Million<br />

to Arnold Palmer Hospital<br />

Funds Will Help Pediatric Brain Tumor Program<br />

Expand Research, Education and Technology<br />

Created in 2011 by founders Mark and Josie NeJame, the<br />

non-profit Runway To Hope is already making an impact<br />

on the Central Florida community. Thanks to the success<br />

of its annual fundraising events and the support base it has<br />

developed, Runway To Hope pledged $1 million over seven<br />

years to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Program at Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital.<br />

Runway To Hope’s mission is to serve and provide direct<br />

support to the children and families in the Central Florida<br />

community who have been impacted by pediatric cancer.<br />

The organization’s annual Spring Fashion Soiree is a starstudded<br />

event, featuring approximately 30 children, ages two<br />

to 18, who either are battling or have overcome cancer. The<br />

children walk the runway arm-in-arm with one of the dozens<br />

of national and local celebrity escorts.<br />

The event has focused much attention on kids dealing<br />

with cancer, and has also garnered several muchdeserved<br />

awards, including Best Charity Event from<br />

<strong>Orlando</strong> Business Journal, and the Award for Excellence<br />

in Fundraising by a Nonprofit Organization from the<br />

Association of Fundraising Professionals.<br />

But the Runway To Hope team says the biggest reward will<br />

be watching the impact their $1 million gift will make on<br />

the patients of Arnold Palmer Hospital, as the Pediatric<br />

Brain Tumor Program continues to grow.<br />

The Give Hope Foundation, which<br />

has been a great partner of Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital since its inception<br />

in 2005, has recently pledged<br />

$30,000 to our Center for Children’s<br />

Cancer and Blood Disorders.<br />

The volunteer organization<br />

provides support in a variety of<br />

ways to children and families<br />

in Central Florida who are<br />

battling childhood cancer. In<br />

addition to their pledge to Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital, the Give Hope<br />

Foundation also operates the Give<br />

Hope Hero Program to help grant<br />

a wish or, more often, much needed<br />

basic assistance to these families.<br />

“We, unfortunately, all know<br />

someone who has had cancer,” says<br />

Pete Piacenti, president, Give Hope<br />

Foundation. “It is a horrible disease<br />

when it strikes at any age, but<br />

somehow, when it affects a child,<br />

it seems even worse, and you feel<br />

even more helpless. The Give Hope<br />

Foundation was created to try and<br />

make a difference in the lives of the<br />

families battling cancer – meeting<br />

them at their time of greatest need.”<br />

My Healing<br />

Harmony<br />

Giving Children the Gift of<br />

Healing and Play through Music<br />

The “My Healing Harmony” Music<br />

Therapy Program at Arnold Palmer<br />

Hospital was founded in 2010<br />

through a generous grant from<br />

Joey Fatone and the Fatone Family<br />

Foundation. Music therapy can<br />

reduce nausea, pain and anxiety<br />

and give emotional support to<br />

children during their procedures.<br />

Led by a credentialed music<br />

therapist, children can take part<br />

in expressive group or individual<br />

activities such as songwriting,<br />

playing instruments and<br />

performing – and even record<br />

their own songs and produce<br />

music videos in the music studio.<br />

No musical skills or experience<br />

are necessary to participate, and<br />

patients of all ages can benefit.<br />

We need your help to keep the<br />

music playing. Arnold Palmer<br />

Hospital’s Music Therapy Program<br />

$15,000 for Music<br />

Therapy Program<br />

The healing power of music comes to life daily with the<br />

“My Healing Harmony” Music Therapy Program at Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital. And recently, some of the biggest names in<br />

music helped the program while rocking <strong>Orlando</strong>.<br />

<strong>Orlando</strong> Calling, a weekend-long music festival, featured<br />

headliners The Killers, Bob Seger and Kid Rock. Those<br />

our program offer the highest level of care to patients and<br />

families across Florida who are in need of our services.”<br />

The next Rock By The Sea festival, scheduled for April<br />

26-29 in Panama City Beach, will also benefit Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital. The event will feature dozens of acts<br />

including major recording artists NEEDTOBREATHE<br />

and Shawn Mullins.<br />

Santa delivered a big gift this year to Arnold Palmer Hospital. The<br />

Mall at Millenia selected Arnold Palmer Hospital as the beneficiary<br />

of their two major holiday events: Santa’s Magical Arrival and<br />

pictures with Santa. The two events together raised over $7,500.<br />

On Friday, November 11, families joined together at the mall to<br />

kick off the holiday season and welcome Santa as he arrived on the<br />

rooftop. A donation of $10 per family of four was requested to enter<br />

the extraordinary outdoor winter scene, complete with food, music,<br />

dancing and entertainment by stilt walkers, magicians, Mrs. Claus<br />

and other characters from the Mall’s “Hollyville” Christmas Village.<br />

Additionally, throughout the entire holiday season, guests were<br />

encouraged to make voluntary contributions to Arnold Palmer<br />

Hospital during their child’s photo session with Santa.<br />

Santa also made a special stop at Arnold Palmer Hospital to bring<br />

holiday cheer to children who were unable to join the fun at the mall.<br />

For 16 years, the Club Managers<br />

Association of America (CMAA)<br />

Sunshine Region has coordinated<br />

an annual golf tournament to give<br />

back to the community. Each year,<br />

the dollars raised have benefited<br />

programs at Arnold Palmer Hospital<br />

that are critical to caring for the<br />

specialized needs of pediatric<br />

patients. At the 16th Annual CMAA<br />

Charity Golf Tournament, held<br />

at <strong>Orlando</strong>’s most revered golf<br />

destination, Arnold Palmer’s Bay<br />

Hill Club & Lodge, CMAA raised<br />

another $30,000, elevating the total<br />

giving in the event’s history to more<br />

than $321,000.<br />

“We couldn’t be more proud to be<br />

the host venue this year for such an<br />

important event,” says Ray Easler,<br />

general manager, Bay Hill Club &<br />

Lodge. “It is our privilege to serve<br />

the community and Arnold Palmer<br />

Hospital. Knowing the role this<br />

plays in improving the lives of these<br />

special children and their families<br />

The proceeds from this year’s<br />

tournament benefit the Hewell<br />

Kids’ Kidney Center at Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital, which cares for<br />

Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagels have proven once again they<br />

are a big hit in Central Florida and are making a difference<br />

for MD Anderson – <strong>Orlando</strong> and cancer patients. The 2011<br />

Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign sold more than 52,000 bagels in<br />

October raising over $30,000. During the past seven years, the<br />

Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign has raised $170,256 to support<br />

cancer services at MD Anderson – <strong>Orlando</strong>.<br />

Real Men Wear Pink<br />

Local Male Celebrities Wear Pink and Raise $12,252 for<br />

Breast Cancer Awareness<br />

Local male celebrities hit the runway for Real Men Wear<br />

Pink, a showcase in support of breast cancer awareness and<br />

the latest in men’s fall fashion trends. Presented by Saks Fifth<br />

Avenue at the Florida Mall, funds were raised through ticket<br />

sales, a percentage of store sales and proceeds from Sak’s<br />

commemorative breast cancer tee-shirts.<br />

Women Playing For T.I.M.E. ® Raises<br />

$510,000 for MD Anderson<br />

Cancer Center <strong>Orlando</strong><br />

Women Playing For T.I.M.E. (Technology, Immediate<br />

diagnosis, Mammography and Education) presented<br />

MD Anderson – <strong>Orlando</strong> with a check for $510,000<br />

raised from the group’s fundraising events held<br />

throughout 2011. The announcement was made during<br />

WPFT’s 19th anniversary charity golf tournament held at<br />

Lake Nona Golf & Country Club.<br />

Since its inception in 1993, WPFT has raised a total of<br />

$8.6 million to fund breast cancer research and other<br />

cancers affecting women as well as community education<br />

about early detection, appropriate screenings and healthy<br />

lifestyles and prevention.<br />

During the luncheon, guests began making spontaneous<br />

gift announcements, raising an additional $60,000 in<br />

unexpected philanthropic support. Says Cheryl Collins,<br />

Foundation vice president, “It was a complete surprise<br />

and an incredibly dramatic conclusion to an outstanding<br />

year with WPFT!”<br />

Throughout Pink October, numerous and diverse events<br />

were held throughout the community to raise awareness<br />

and support for women affected by cancer. Following are<br />

highlights of a few of those events.<br />

$30,000 to MD Anderson – <strong>Orlando</strong>.<br />

Leaving a Legacy<br />

C. Carlisle and Margaret Tippit lived lives focused on<br />

serving their community - a legacy that will long survive<br />

both of them. Even after losing her husband in 2003,<br />

Margaret continued her involvement with several charities<br />

throughout the country until she passed late last year.<br />

Known by family and friends as Tip and Margie, they<br />

were beloved parents, grandparents and philanthropists.<br />

Tip and Margie traveled the world, touring 190 countries<br />

together. They were blessed with five children and 21<br />

grandchildren.<br />

In addition, they were strong supporters of Arnold<br />

Palmer Hospital, giving through a variety of planned gifts<br />

including charitable trusts and life insurance to create a<br />

philanthropic legacy that will continue for many years.<br />

Charitable trusts are an excellent way to provide income for<br />

you and your family, receive significant income and estate tax<br />

benefits, and create a lasting legacy at <strong>Orlando</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.<br />

Life insurance provides an opportunity to make a<br />

meaningful yet relatively low-cost gift, it offers immediate<br />

An endowment is a permanent fund established to benefit an institution for a specific purpose chosen by the donor. In an<br />

endowment fund, the principal is invested and only a portion of the investment earnings are spent. The rest of the earnings<br />

are directed back into the fund, so that the endowment grows over time, becoming a perpetual source of funding for whatever<br />

Casino Night Raises $10,000 to Purchase New Technology<br />

for Women’s Imaging Center<br />

The Women’s Advisory Council was established by the <strong>Orlando</strong><br />

<strong>Health</strong> Foundation to promote advocacy and funding initiatives<br />

in support of quality healthcare programs and services at South<br />

Seminole Hospital. Comprised of volunteers, this leadership<br />

group shares time and expertise to help evaluate programs;<br />

identify new opportunities and initiatives; advocate for and<br />

promote wellness and community outreach programs; and<br />

build a culture of philanthropy to ultimately benefit and ensure<br />

availability of quality healthcare services for those we serve.<br />

Recently, the Women’s Advisory Council hosted a Casino Night<br />

at the Sanford Zoo. A total of $10,000 was raised, enabling the<br />

purchase of a new neoprobe for the Women’s Imaging Center at<br />

South Seminole Hospital.<br />

An <strong>Orlando</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Lifestyle Medicine Initiative<br />

Spring is a time of renewal and refreshment. It’s in that light that I share the following: I<br />

recently found myself smack dab in the middle of a major health crisis. I didn’t get there by<br />

chance. It was not a random “happening.” Approximately four years ago, my brother was<br />

diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. Rather than writing it off as “his problem,” I was<br />

proactive with my own health and proceeded to be tested for the condition. I was relieved to<br />

learn that I did not have the same condition but was surprised to learn I had “an issue” of my<br />

own. Mine was one that is typically only discovered post-mortem… Wow! How lucky was I to<br />

have found it early! I have since made a full-recovery and am stronger than ever…but that is<br />

because I was proactive in making decisions to improve my health.<br />
