Sigma Beta Delta was established to honor students who have attained superior records in business programs in schools and colleges with regional accreditation. Students are selected based upon their class ranking in the top 20 percent, good moral character and endorsement by faculty members. Honorary members are individuals who have distinguished themselves in the practice of business, management or administration. Pedersen resides in Wayne and was the recipient of the 2007 Alumni Service Award at the WSC Homecoming and Hall of Fame Banquet. Pedersen is the owner of The Diamond Center - Flowers & Wine. Pedersen has committed his time and support to Wayne State College as a member of Catbackers, trustee of the Wayne State Foundation, Executive Committee member and past President of the Wayne State Foundation. Alumni in the News: Jesse Kiefer ‘02 Uses His Skills to Teach Art and Martial Arts by Don Bowen of Fremont Tribune, May 1, 2009 Above other things, Jesse Kiefer considers himself a teacher. But the 31-year-old Fremonter said it isn’t his job as an elementary school art teacher for Fremont Public Schools that necessarily gives him that identity. He was a teacher before he went to college. In fact, he’s been teaching since he was 18. What started as a Christmas gift from his mother when he was 15 blossomed into much of the life he has now, he said. He was given martial arts instruction lessons. He and his brother took the lessons and practiced often at home. By 18, he had a second degree black belt, which gave him the authority to teach. He graduated from WSC in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in K-12 art education, giving him the license to teach art. Kiefer teaches art and travels to Washington, Linden and Clarmar elementary schools. When most people think about teaching art to elementary school students and teaching martial arts, they may not understand the correlation between the two. “It boils down to problem solving for both,’’ he said. “Martial arts does deal with a lot of self-defense scenarios, but art is similar even though things aren’t life threatening. It is still problem solving.’’ The goal is to still help students understand and succeed in what they are doing, he said. “Seeing students succeed is the best part,’’ he said. “That’s the product. It doesn’t matter if they’re doing a spinning side kick that breaks three boards or finishing a drawing that’s show worthy. It’s something that they are proud of. That’s rewarding.’’ 22
