Although most
models are supplied
‘ex works’ from the
box it’s easy to
forget that railways
are a naturally dirty
environment. They
operate within urban, industrial and rural areas,
running through all weathers and, down the years,
have carried all manner of materials.
With the expert help of George Dent a variety of
different techniques are demonstrated including
easy weathering with Tamiya weathering Master
pigments, applying faded shades of the EWS
finish, aiming for a tired paint job but generally
clean. Weathering track with an airbrush. Using
Scenic Rust and Tensocrom Glazes on buildings.
Producing a dirty loco, but weathered using paints
and powders. Producing the look of a working but
well cleaned loco, using metalcote enamels
buffed-up to give an oily shine. The end of steam
neglected look using a combination of techniques.
But now, at long
last, things can be
very different.
By using Digital
it’s possible to actually ‘drive’ each train.
Complicated shunting manoeuvres and even
The ‘Cam’ Camwell
COLLECTION
W.A. ‘Cam’ Camwell was one of the most active railway enthusiasts
during the 1950s and 60s – the period during which British Railways
moved from steam to diesel and electric traction and many railway
lines and branches passed into history.
His membership of the Stephenson Locomotive Society led him to
organise many tours of threatened or interesting railway lines and he
enthusiastically recorded as much of the railway network as possible
both in photographs and on 16mm cine film. The latter forms the basis
of this series of programmes, as Cam filmed many remote and
obscure lines, as well as interesting developments, on the main lines.
”There is only one thing a reviewer needs to say
about this series: every reader is urged to go
out and buy it”... ”possibly the most
comprehensive and best quality record of BR
steam days ever...” Heritage Railway Magazine
”...Railfilms have done a marvellous job of
researching the historical background to the
scenes and has added a most illuminating and
informative commentary”. Railway Magazine
well. From Cambridge to Dover, on to
Southampton and the Isle of Wight then along
the coast to Devon and Cornwall he visited
and filmed many railways which have changed
or disappeared altogether – including the
Framlingham branch, the Midland and Great
Northern, Canterbury and Whitstable Railway,
the Hayling branch, Island lines to Freshwater
and Cowes, the Somerset and Dorset, the
to the pre-Grouping Companies such as
Adams’s 02 0-4-4Ts, Dean Goods, a “Star”, S
WELSH
HIGHLAND
NEW
Without a doubt, the re-birth of the Welsh highland is
the greatest railway heritage story of our times.
Begun in the 1870s, this fascinating narrow-gauge line,
built through some of Britain’s most glorious scenery,
was bankrupt almost from the start. Struggling on,
dogged by misfortune and mismanagement, its 23 miles
were not fully completed until 1923 – and even then it
failed to reach its ultimate goal of Caernarfon. Then,
after just fourteen brief years, it closed down – to be
sold off for scrap in the Second World War, while the
trackbed reverted to farmland and wilderness, in places
vanishing altogether.
A full half century was to pass before the railway
preservation movement became confident and
established enough to attempt to waken this sleeping
beauty. The rebuilding of the Welsh Highland, from
scratch, would lead through a quagmire of debt,
scheming, and politics high and low, while steam
engineers searched the world for suitable locomotives
and rolling stock.
This programme tells the story of how that
seemingly impossible dream was conceived,
nurtured and finally completed – all the way to
Caernarfon. Rare historic and contemporary film
is backed by nostalgic scenes of the wilderness
years, now themselves history, while several of
the key players involved tell of their part in
bringing the dream to reality. With wide-ranging
appeal to tourists, historians and enthusiasts
alike, this programme forms a lasting record of
a truly remarkable achievement.
Bonus Footage! A final segment of the programme is devoted to 10
minutes bonus footage featuring steam action on the South African
Railway’s narrow gauge in the 1980s. A source for equipment essential
to the rebuilding of the Welsh Highland and a source that through its
existence helped ensure that a dream could indeed come true.
Sir Walter Scott
The Steamship Sir Walter Scott – A Living Legend – Since 1900
the steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing majestically on
Loch Katrine, allowing today’s visitor the opportunity to experience
a bygone age, in a landscape of unmatched splendour.
18
This programme recounts the story of this famous vessel and
captures the very essence of a land steeped in history and
atmosphere. The recent rebuild of the ship, vital to maintain its
tradition and support the local tourist industry, is also told. A story
that could so easily have ended in disaster were it not for the
support of a new owning and managing Trust, a valuable Friends’
organisation, the Scottish Government and much local enthusiasm.
A £2m rescue package has enabled the ship to be rebuilt with
refurbished engine, new boilers and a host of updated facilities so
securing the future for a piece of unique maritime history. Sir Walter
Scott first steamed on Loch Katrine in 1900. Today, over 100 years
later, she still does the job she was built for: steaming between
Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar, a vital part of Scotland’s tourist
industry in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Converted to environmentally friendly bio fuel steam operation
Sir Walter Scott is ready for the next 100 years of service on the
tranquil waters of Loch Katrine. Within the programme aerial
photography, historic pictures and previously unpublished archive
film capture the spirit of this endeavour.
STEAM
All aboard for the trip of a lifetime! Relive those nostalgic days of steam
in this new programme specially produced for The Fellsman by Railfilms.
Over 80 minutes of fascinating footage, archive material and recent
action shots. This programme, in two indexed parts, provides a unique
insight into the celebrated Fellsman steam excursions that have carried
thousands of people over the famous Settle and Carlisle railway on a
journey back in time to the days when steam was king and when the
journey was as exciting as the destination.
FELLSMAN STEAM (Part One)
In Part One join the train for its journey north.
With special unrestricted access to the
footplate, there is a chance to witness the
challenging work of the footplate crew as they
shovel tons of coal into the firebox, keep a
steady head of steam and get their
passengers to Carlisle on time. Expertly shot
lineside views provide an enthralling
spectacle as the train charges north to
Carlisle. An informative narration plus
captions, maps and aerial photography of the
famous Ribblehead viaduct complete the
experience and tell the story of The Fellsman,
Britain’s most exhilarating steam adventure!
FELLSMAN MOTIVE POWER (Part Two)
In this segment of the programme we meet
some of the steam engines that provide the
“pool” of motive power based at Carnforth’s
depot and that on occasion operate on
Fellsman duties. With much previously
unpublished archive film, enjoy the sights and
sounds of LMS Jubilee Leander, LMS Royal
Scot “Scots Guardsman”, LMS 8F No: 48151
and Black Five 44932. See members of the
classes at work in their heyday, and as seen
today, having been successful survivors into
the world of railway preservation. The
producers acknowledge the contribution of
locomotive crews and preservationists
without whom much of Britain’s unique steam
railway heritage would not exist and without
whom the celebrated Fellsman could not
THE
Roger Siviter
DIESELS
This series of programmes concentrates on
loco-hauled diesel action in the late 1980s
early 1990s. Roger & Christina Siviter were at
the lineside to record a time when the winds
of change for Britain’s Railways were blowing
at gale force. BR’s five business sectors
(InterCity, Provincial, Freight, Parcels and
Network South East) were paving the way for
full-scale privatisation. Locomotive haulage of
passenger trains was on the way out. New
trains in new liveries were on the way in.
OUT
NOW
Volume One – Waterloo – Exeter
& Diesels in Wessex
Relegated to a single track secondary route by the
short term economy-driven culture of the 60s,the
Waterloo-Salisbury-Exeter route has experienced
gradual increases in passenger numbers as the
boom years of the 1990s made long distance
commuting popular, demanding plenty of reliable,
fast trains to London. Class 50s displaced by HSTS
from the Great Western main line should have
been tailor made for the rival Southern Railway
route to the west. With 100mph capability, plenty
of horsepower and long range fuel tanks we
witness them at work over the entire length of
the line in their final years, inevitably bolstered
by class 47s and 33s.
Diesels in Wessex
It’s May 1990, and the Mendip stone boom is in full cry.
The majority of trains of aggregates to feed the
burgeoning Home Counties construction industry still
have class 56s in charge, but the General Motors
revolution is just beginning in the shape of Foster
Yeoman’s class 59s. this part of the programme records
not only these workings but InterCity and local trains as
well. This is followed by a look at class 47s on passenger
and mail trains in the Taunton area, and the comings and
goings around the magnificent train shed of Bristol
Temple Meads.
COLLECTION
Volume Two – Diesels
in Devon and Cornwall
Diesels in Devon
In this programme we see locohaulage
combined mainly, but
not entirely, to cross-country
passenger services, with most
London services in the hands
of HSTs. BR’s Intercity Sector
is giving way to First Great
Western and Virgin trains,
and class 47s rule the railway.
Railway traditions like holiday extras to Paignton and the
West are alive and well, bringing in class 31s as well as
the occasional Freight sector Class 47 pressed into
service on busy summer weekends. Freight to the west
is largely in the hands of class 37s, often in pairs, and
Network South East’s class 50s work some services west
of Exeter to Paignton and to Plymouth. Dawlish sea wall
and the rolling countryside of Dainton and Rattery banks
provide the main backdrop for Roger’s cameras in this
feast of Devonian Diesel action.
Diesels in Cornwall
Brunel’s Royal Albert Bridge stands as proud as ever,
seemingly impervious to the changing fleet of classes 37,
47 and 50 on freight, passenger , parcels and mail trains
heading to and from West of the Tamar. BR’s Intercity
Sector is metamorphosing into Virgin Cross Country and
First Great Western, while Cornwall’s famous China Clay
freights centred on St Blazey transfer from Railfreight
Distribution through the short-lived Transrail to Americanowned
EWS. We see some of the final class 50 turns on
local passenger trains, 37s on China Clay freights, 47s on
passengers and mails, and a good collection of HSTs. Oh,
and we see a few DMUs and railtours, as well! And all
set against Cornwall’s unique railway landscape.
Volume Three –
Diesels in the
Highlands
The end of the 1980s and
beginning of the 1990s was a
period of great change on
Scot land’s railways. The
traditional loco plus coaches
formations which attracted
so many enthusiasts north
of the border were on the
way out, and the Sprinter rev -
olution – which had already started on shorter distance
trains in the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas – was
gathering momentum to oust locomotive haulage
completely within a few short years.
Well-known photographer Roger Siviter made several
trips to Scotland to document the changing scene,
attracted not only by the scenery but also by the amount
of surviving traditional infrastructure and signalling. Like
many still photographers do today with digital cam -
corders, Roger would often also take moving pictures,
using then state of the art Super-8 sound cameras.
Sometimes Roger would simply let trains run through the
scene while at others his wife Christina, his companion
on so many railway trips, would operate the cine camera.
This collection of Rogers work, covering a variety of
passenger and freight workings in the early years of the
1990s, on some of Scotland’s main scenic rail routes
starts with a journey from Edinburgh to Dundee and
Aberdeen, via both the Forth Bridge and Stirling. Also the
rarely photographed line from Aberdeen to Inverness. This
is followed by action on the Highland Line – Perth to
Inverness and then from Inverness to the far north and
Kyle of Lochalsh. Also, Fort William to Mallaig on the
West Highland Extension Railway. Class 47s,and 37s
feature throughout with glimpses of class 20, 26 and 56.
An operational railway scene that has changed for ever
and yet recorded here for posterity.
ARCHIVE SERIES
AnAGE of
STEAM
ive fabulous volumes
100% archive film all
Fprofessionally dubbed
with authentic steam audio
sounds and accompanying
commentary. Each programme
approximately 55 minutes.
Featuring the entire Richard Willis Collection
The 1960s were to prove to be
the last decade in which the
steam locomotive was to be
used in public service on the
national railway network of
Great Britain. It had held sway
for virtually one and a half
centuries and its charisma had
created a devoted following
amongst the male population
of the country of its birth that
amounted almost to a cult.
For much of its lifetime the steam locomotive fleet’s history was recorded in
print, and whilst a vast knowledge base was built up by professional and
amateur historians alike very few took an opportunity to record the working
scene on movie film.
Moving images of the steam locomotive are therefore rare in
comparison as the professional railwayman had little need of such
footage other than for publicity purposes. We are then indeed fortunate
that there were such amateur movie cameramen as Richard Willis who
recorded these priceless images of everyday steam in action. It is from
his unique collection that this series of five programmes has been
created.
● TITLES IN THE SERIES ●
Volume 1 – Home Territories
Richard Willis was brought up in Leicestershire, near the county
town, so it is to his ‘home territory’ that this first programme is
devoted. He started filming in the early 1960s when steam had less
than a decade still to run. Diesel trains - such as the Blue Pullman
were already making inroads. This first volume is devoted to this
changing scene.
Including: Leicester MPD, Belgrave & Birstall, Rugby, Croxton,
Aylestone Fields, Leicester Central, Abbey Lane, Rothley,
Loughborough, Nottingham Victoria and many other lineside
locations.
Volume 2 – Midland Memories
Venturing out from his ‘home territory’ Richard Willis now brings us
a varied collection of railway locations on what is a fascinating
Midland Railway lineside ramble. The programme starts at one of
the great cathedrals of steam - St Pancras. It is from here that we
travel northwards through Kettering, Market Harborough, Leicester,
Ketton and Collyweston, Syston, Desford, Derby, Leeds, Kirkby
Stephen West, Carlisle, Manchester Victoria, Stockport, Crewe,
Nuneaton, Birmingham (New Street) and more. Including action
from Stanier 8Fs, Jubilees, Crab, WD, Black5s, Britannias and
Duchesses.
Volume 3 – East Coast Thoroughbreds
To many people the classic view of the East Coast Main Line would
include a Gresley Pacific at speed. To Richard Willis, this was the end
of an era that he painstakingly just had to record on 16mm cine film.
The result is his record of a mainline steam railway that was as
individual as its locomotives.
This incredible journey of remembrance starts at London’s King’s
Cross station and includes scenes at Abbott’s Ripton, Peterborough,
Burton Coggles, Grantham, Torworth, Leeds Central, York, York
Shed, Northallerton, Durham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and other
lineside locations. Including classes A1, A3, A4, V2 and many more.
Volume 4 – Last Steam Mainlines
In this programme Richard Willis takes his camera to record the last
mainline steam at a variety of well-known locations. The programme
starts at Waterloo; terminus for the West of England main line to
Salisbury and Exeter and the Bournemouth and Weymouth main
lines. Including lineside locations at Weybridge, Chertsey,
Brookwood, Pirbright Junc, Cove, Fleet, Farnborough, Overton,
Salisbury, Brockenhurst, Hinton Admiral, Bournemouth,
Other last main lines include scenes at Leicester, Derby, Banbury,
and York before a final part of the programme looks at the West
Coast Main Line with scenes in the Lune Gorge, at Grayrigg, Tebay,
Scout Green and Carlisle.
An Age of Steam
Volumes 1–5
Running Time 55 mins
DVD £20 per vol
Volume 5 – Western and North Western
In this final programme of the Richard Willis collection we discover
once more how he was keen to record what at the time were the
everyday scenes of the working railway in the 1960s. The film starts
with a record of the Oxfordshire branch line scene before moving on
to Aynho Junc, Banbury, Leamington Spa, Snow Hill, Wellington,
Hereford’s Barr’s Court, Welshpool, Oswestry, Stratford-upon-Avon,
then across to Helpstone, Claypole and Doncaster and northwards
to Chester, Colwyn Bay and Holyhead.
Finally, in August 1968, to the steam heartlands of the northwest at
Manchester Victoria and Carnforth the Age of Steam came to its
conclusion.
