SETTLE to CARLISLE
Over the last few decades, there have been many TV profiles of the
beautiful Settle to Carlisle railway. However, only Tele Rail based at
nearby Carnforth, are in a unique position to capture all the best rail
activity right through the year. From the incredible winter snows of 2010
throughout the following seasons, this programme gives a unique
insight into the character of this wonderful line contrasting steam,
freight and everyday passenger movements along the whole route.
In just 72 miles between Settle and Carlisle there are 14 tunnels and
over 20 viaducts. So it’s hardly surprising that for many rail fans this
wonderful line with its unique mixture of magnificent Victorian
engineering and beautiful scenery represents the most scenic railway
journey in England today.
The line has survived two very misguided attempts to close it – once
in the early 1960s and later in the 1980s. However, today this
extraordinary line is once again very busy with freight and passengers
who now benefit from the millions of pounds invested in both the track
and stations in recent years.
The Four Seasons
Expertly scripted, this programme offers
the very best of railway action along the
entire Settle to Carlisle line throughout
the year and is certain to appeal to both
lovers of railways and the beautiful
Yorkshire Dales National Park.
GERMAN
EXPLORER
Apart from the UK there’s nowhere else in Europe that offers so much
heritage railway variety as Germany. This useful DVD contrasts the
most interesting steam operations with some more unusual modern
motive power including:
lThe Rhine – regular narrow gauge loco hauled mixed
passenger and freight services on the Brohltalbahn.
lPlandampf – a deservedly popular German favourite –
the spectacle of putting standard gauge steam on rural
secondary main line train services.
lHarz winter action, contrasting the new section of regauged
track to Quedlinburg with the magnificent and
steeply graded climb to the snowy Brocken summit.
lSauschwaenzlebahn – the ‘Pig’s Tail’ line – with many
spectacular viaducts near the Black Forest.
lWuppertal Schwebebahn – one of the most unusual railways in
the world this futuristic mono rail actually opened in 1901.
lBad Doberan & Gohren. Baltic steam action including daily street
running in the far North of Germany.
lPreßnitztalbahn – a wonderful and comparatively little known
narrow gauge line that operates with a real communist East
German feel.
lRadebeul, Freital and Oberwiesenthal surviving Saxon steam
near Dresden.
Austrian Explorer
mountain scenery and action.
l The historic Mariazellerbahn which still uses
electric locos built between 1909 and 1914.
New Zealand
From the spectacular Southern Alps to the fertile
dairy farmlands of North Island New Zealand is one
of the most scenic and attractive areas on the
planet. Of a roughly similar land mass to the UK,
but with a population of only 4 million or so
New Zealand doesn’t support an intense rail
network. However, it is a country full of contrast,
as this unique guide which features plenty of
wonderful scenery including stunning aerial views
of Mount Cook and coastal scenery shows.
Trunk services: spectacular mountain and coastal scenery, the backbone
of rail freight operations on both North & South Island that together with
the inter island train ferry connect the major population centres of
Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
Milk trains: one of the few places in the world that it's possible to see
huge daily train loads of milk is the section of line to Whareroa on North
Island.
Commuter services: Wellington & Christchurch
Passenger services: The Overlander & the TranzCoastal.
Christchurch: a historic city that's big enough to feature a daily circular
tourist tram service.
The Midland line: freight & passenger traffic on one of the most scenic
railway lines in New Zealand, including a cab ride on the famous
TransAlpine passenger connecting Christchurch & Greymouth across the
formidable Southern Alps.
Steam: contrasting mainline steam operations and the Weka Pass
railway.
Heritage travel: the highly popular Taieri Gorge railway plus Pacific
coastal action from Dunedin to Palmerston.
If you are planning a trip to New Zealand this DVD will prove an invaluable
guide to both the railways and the magnificient countryside.
TheGavin Morrison
Gavin Morrison needs no
introduction to most railfans – his
evocative photographs of British
steam during the glory days are
justifiably well known and loved
throughout the world. However,
few people realise that Gavin
Morrison is also a talented film
cameraman, and while out
photographing steam he often
turned his attention to producing
a superb high quality film record
as well.
Much of the footage in this series
has never been viewed publicly
before – and certainly not in this
unique form. The Gavin Morrison
Collection is a highly original
chronological series, spanning
the years from 1962 to the early
years of preservation after the
end of mainline steam in 1968.
These superb programmes give a
Air Brush Expert
There are few aspects
of model making that
are surrounded by
more myth and mystery
than the art of air brushing. However by
studying this specially produced programme you too
can become an Air Brush Expert!
Old fashioned brush painting methods can never
match up to the superb ‘scale appearance’, achieved
by spray painting with an air brush.
In the first of Model Rail’s EXPERT series of special
video programmes, DARREN SHERWOOD takes you
through everything you need to know about air
brushing – from choosing the right equipment, to
paint mixing, spraying techniques, cleaning and care,
to weathering.
With support from air brush makers, Revell, and paint
manufacturers Phoenix Precision and Railmatch,
Darren demonstrates how to prepare your models
This new DVD is a
superb in-depth
guide to helping you
achieve the very
best bespoke
weathering job
possible.
Although most
models are supplied
'ex works' from the
box it's easy to
forget that railways
are a naturally dirty
environment. They
operate within urban, industrial and rural areas,
running through all weathers and, down the years,
have carried all manner of materials.
With the expert help of George Dent a variety of
different techniques are demonstrated including
easy weathering with Tamiya weathering Master
pigments, applying faded shades of the EWS finish,
aiming for a tired paint job but generally clean.
Weathering track with an airbrush. Using Scenic
Rust and Tensocrom Glazes on buildings. Producing
a dirty loco, but weathered using paints and
powders. Producing the look of a working but well
cleaned loco, using metalcote enamels buffed-up to
give an oily shine. The end of steam neglected look
using a combination of techniques.
Railwaymen
Reminiscing
Although we are fortunate to be able to enjoy so much
heritage steam action in the UK, the regular routine and
everyday working life of the railway crews who worked
with steam has now become a distant memory that’s all
too easy to forget.
This important series sets out to provide an enter -
taining social account of what life was really like back
in steam days, delving into every aspect of a typical
working day, explained by each person using their
own words. From cleaners to controllers and
footplate crews, the fascinating interviews give a rare
insight into those halcyon days and are carefully
illustrated with suitable archive film, including rare
footplate views of locos at speed on the main line.
Ffestiniog BIZARRE!
On a Spring weekend in
2010 the Ffestiniog
Railway was host to
a splendid
gathering of oneoffs,
oddities
and curiosities
on the twofoot
gauge
railway.
Sir Walter Scott
The Steamship Sir Walter Scott – A Living Legend – Since 1900
the steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing majestically on
Loch Katrine, allowing today’s visitor the opportunity to experience
a bygone age, in a landscape of unmatched splendour.
This programme recounts the story of this famous vessel and
captures the very essence of a land steeped in history and
atmosphere. The recent rebuild of the ship, vital to maintain its
tradition and support the local tourist industry, is also told. A story
that could so easily have ended in disaster were it not for the
support of a new owning and managing Trust, a valuable Friends’
organisation, the Scottish Government and much local enthusiasm.
A £2m rescue package has enabled the ship to be rebuilt with
refurbished engine, new boilers and a host of updated facilities so
securing the future for a piece of unique maritime history. Sir Walter
Scott first steamed on Loch Katrine in 1900. Today, over 100 years
later, she still does the job she was built for: steaming between
Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar, a vital part of Scotland’s tourist
industry in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Converted to environmentally friendly bio fuel steam operation
Sir Walter Scott is ready for the next 100 years of service on the
tranquil waters of Loch Katrine. Within the programme aerial
photography, historic pictures and previously unpublished archive
film capture the spirit of this endeavour.
Wlocomotives, dating from the 1860s
up to the present day,
were the highlight, this
showcased some highly
unorthodox internal
combustion machines, plus, unforgettably, the Ffestiniog Bizarre!
forces of nature as motive power: wind and gravity. Running Time 45 mins
Blessed throughout by fine weather, the weekend DVD £20
provided many memorable scenes, ranging from the blessing of new
2-6-2T Lyd by the Bishop of Bangor, to a ride all the way from Summit to
Porthmadog by gravity slate train. All are
brought together in this programme, along
with some historic clips of original scenes in
Ffestiniog history commemorated here at
colourful, unique and unforgettable
STEAM
All aboard for the trip of a lifetime! Relive those nostalgic days of steam
in this new programme specially produced for The Fellsman by Railfilms.
Over 80 minutes of fascinating footage, archive material and recent
action shots. This programme, in two indexed parts, provides a unique
insight into the celebrated Fellsman steam excursions that have carried
thousands of people over the famous Settle and Carlisle railway on a
journey back in time to the days when steam was king and when the
journey was as exciting as the destination.
FELLSMAN STEAM (Part One)
In Part One join the train for its journey north.
With special unrestricted access to the
footplate, there is a chance to witness the
challenging work of the footplate crew as they
shovel tons of coal into the firebox, keep a
steady head of steam and get their
passengers to Carlisle on time. Expertly shot
lineside views provide an enthralling
spectacle as the train charges north to
Carlisle. An informative narration plus
captions, maps and aerial photography of the
famous Ribblehead viaduct complete the
experience and tell the story of The Fellsman,
Britain’s most exhilarating steam adventure!
FELLSMAN MOTIVE POWER (Part Two)
In this segment of the programme we meet
some of the steam engines that provide the
“pool” of motive power based at Carnforth’s
depot and that on occasion operate on
Fellsman duties. With much previously
unpublished archive film, enjoy the sights and
sounds of LMS Jubilee Leander, LMS Royal
Scot “Scots Guardsman”, LMS 8F No: 48151
and Black Five 44932. See members of the
classes at work in their heyday, and as seen
today, having been successful survivors into
the world of railway preservation. The
producers acknowledge the contribution of
locomotive crews and preservationists
without whom much of Britain’s unique steam
railway heritage would not exist and without
whom the celebrated Fellsman could not
operate. Produced for Statesman Rail Ltd.
‘Cam’ Camwell
W.A. ‘Cam’ Camwell was one of the most active railway enthusiasts during
the 1950s and 60s – the period during which British Railways moved from
steam to diesel and electric traction and many railway lines and branches
passed into history.
His membership of the Stephenson Locomotive Society led him to organise
many tours of threatened or interesting railway lines and he enthusiastically
recorded as much of the railway network as possible both in photographs
and on 16mm cine film. The latter forms the basis of this series of
programmes, as Cam filmed many remote and obscure lines, as well as
interesting developments, on the main lines.
Volume 3 A Tale of Many Gauges
This programme begins on the Isle of Man – well after WW2 when the 3ft
gauge railway still boasted a busy timetable both for summer tourists and
for the Islanders and their goods. In Ireland, we see services on the 3ft
gauge County Donegal, Logh Swilly and Cavan & Leitrim systems in their
declining years. A broad-gauge journey behind steam to the far south-
Based on James Boyd’s unique cine archive, this programme features,
among other lines, the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway in its freight-only
days; the privately-owned Penrhyn and Padarn systems, and the quarries
they served; the 15” gauge Fairbourne Railway and the Vale of Rheidol.
west, includes, amongst other gems, a footplate trip on the remote Standard gauge travels, by both service and special trains, cover lines of
Valentia Harbour Branch, and finally, on the 3ft gauge once more, comes character in Derbyshire, Denbighshire and Lancashire, with visits to
an unforgettable ride on the legendary Tralee & Dingle.
industrial sites where locomotives of special interest were at work.
by Ian Brownrigg, provide an up-to-date and comprehensive view of the rail scene.
