SETTLE to CARLISLE 

Over the last few decades, there have been many TV profiles of the 

beautiful Settle to Carlisle railway. However, only Tele Rail based at 

nearby Carnforth, are in a unique position to capture all the best rail 

activity right through the year. From the incredible winter snows of 2010 

throughout the following seasons, this programme gives a unique 

insight into the character of this wonderful line contrasting steam, 

freight and everyday passenger movements along the whole route. 

In just 72 miles between Settle and Carlisle there are 14 tunnels and 

over 20 viaducts. So it’s hardly surprising that for many rail fans this 

wonderful line with its unique mixture of magnificent Victorian 

engineering and beautiful scenery represents the most scenic railway 

journey in England today. 

The line has survived two very misguided attempts to close it – once 

in the early 1960s and later in the 1980s. However, today this 

extraordinary line is once again very busy with freight and passengers

gathering of oneoffs, 

oddities 

and curiosities 

on the twofoot 

gauge 

railway.

The Steamship Sir Walter Scott – A Living Legend – Since 1900 

the steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing majestically on 

Loch Katrine, allowing today’s visitor the opportunity to experience 

a bygone age, in a landscape of unmatched splendour. 

This programme recounts the story of this famous vessel and 

captures the very essence of a land steeped in history and 

atmosphere. The recent rebuild of the ship, vital to maintain its 

tradition and support the local tourist industry, is also told. A story 

that could so easily have ended in disaster were it not for the 

support of a new owning and managing Trust, a valuable Friends’ 

organisation, the Scottish Government and much local enthusiasm. 

A £2m rescue package has enabled the ship to be rebuilt with 

refurbished engine, new boilers and a host of updated facilities so 

securing the future for a piece of unique maritime history. Sir Walter 

Scott first steamed on Loch Katrine in 1900. Today, over 100 years 

later, she still does the job she was built for: steaming between 

Trossachs Pier and Stronachlachar, a vital part of Scotland’s tourist 

industry in an area of outstanding natural beauty. 

Converted to environmentally friendly bio fuel steam operation 

Sir Walter Scott is ready for the next 100 years of service on the 

tranquil waters of Loch Katrine. Within the programme aerial 

photography, historic pictures and previously unpublished archive 

film capture the spirit of this endeavour.

some of the steam engines that provide the 

“pool” of motive power based at Carnforth’s 

depot and that on occasion operate on 

Fellsman duties. With much previously 

unpublished archive film, enjoy the sights and 

sounds of LMS Jubilee Leander, LMS Royal 

Scot “Scots Guardsman”, LMS 8F No: 48151 

and Black Five 44932. See members of the 

classes at work in their heyday, and as seen 

today, having been successful survivors into 

the world of railway preservation. The

locomotive crews and preservationists

railway heritage would not exist and without

‘Cam’ Camwell 

W.A. ‘Cam’ Camwell was one of the most active railway enthusiasts during 

the 1950s and 60s – the period during which British Railways moved from 

steam to diesel and electric traction and many railway lines and branches 

passed into history. 

His membership of the Stephenson Locomotive Society led him to organise 

many tours of threatened or interesting railway lines and he enthusiastically 

recorded as much of the railway network as possible both in photographs 

and on 16mm cine film. The latter forms the basis of this series of 

programmes, as Cam filmed many remote and obscure lines, as well as 

interesting developments, on the main lines.
