<strong>Course</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islamic</strong> <strong>paleography</strong> <strong>by</strong> <strong>Jan</strong> <strong>Just</strong> <strong>Witkam</strong><br />
<strong>Tasks</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> student:<br />
1. Read <strong>the</strong> bibliographical description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscript.<br />
2. Carefully compare <strong>the</strong> images <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscript with <strong>the</strong> proposed transliteration. Get accustomed<br />
with peculiarities <strong>of</strong> this hand.<br />
3. Transcribe in <strong>the</strong> same way a considerable portion <strong>of</strong> that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscript which has not been<br />
transliterated. Start where <strong>the</strong> given transliteration ends. See how far you come.<br />
4. Note remarkable or unusual ligatures and make a list <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se.<br />
5. Make an inventory <strong>of</strong> all signs and peculiarities which are different from modern practice.<br />

Arabic, paper (bright reddish), 25 ff., naskh script, dated 726 [1326] (several dates in that year mentioned in <strong>the</strong><br />
Qirāʾāt and Samāʿāt on ff. 24b-25b), paper cover, pasted boards. F. 1a is <strong>the</strong> title-page with Riwāyāt.<br />
The vendor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscript, Amīn al-Madanī has written on <strong>the</strong> fly-leaf in front that <strong>the</strong> text has been written<br />
in <strong>the</strong> hand <strong>of</strong> al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Barzalī, and o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Manṣūr b. Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim Ibn al-Ṣaffār al-Nīsābūrī in a letter to Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-<br />
Wāḥid al-Maqdisī (d. 690/1291). The text is erroneously ascribed in GAL S I, 690 to Ḍiyāʾ al-Dīn Muḥammad b.<br />
ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Maqdisī (d. 643/1245). Amin 177. See Voorhoeve, Handlist, p. 21, where <strong>the</strong> title is given as al-<br />
