To meet those needs, the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin encourages donors, and school and community leaders to consider the power of endowment funds. We only need look at our own history to make our case. Twenty-plus years after our founding, grants and scholarships from endowments at the Community Foundation reach into every segment of our communities opening doors and changing lives. The Community Foundation supports communities in nine counties – Crawford, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Rock, Sauk, Vernon and Walworth. Matching personal philanthropy with community need through endowment building in this area is our mission. We can all give back to our community by contributing to Community Foundation endowed funds that will give forward to all future generations— for good for ever. 2012-2013 Green County Humane Society Endowment Endowment Supports New Animal Shelter Fund P Goes Hand in Hand with Capital Campaign lanning for the future was important to the project leaders of the new Green County Humane Society building. With long-term needs in mind, they proposed a nearly 14,000 square foot building, more than four times the size of the Society’s old facility. Planning for the support and maintenance of their upgraded operations was important, too. So before construction began, they created an endowment fund. “Any 501(c )(3) needs assurance that it can maintain itself in the future,” said John Baumann, chair of the Humane Society’s capital campaign. “I really feel the endowment is an insurance policy for the long-term survival of the organization.” In addition, Baumann believed that the $900,000 capital John Baumann, center, presents a check for the GCHS Endowment Fund to Linda Gebhardt, left, and Ron Spielman, right. campaign would have more success if leaders showed the foresight to create the endowment right away. “Some key stakeholders wanted assurance of the Humane Society’s staying power,” he said. “The endowment gave donors confidence in the capital campaign.” Bauman, the CEO of Colony Brands of Monroe, led by example. Last December, Colony Brands made a gift of $400,000 to the Green County Humane Society Endowment Fund. In addition, Colony Brands employees selected the Endowment Fund as the recipient of $27,000 of their earned service allocations. “We want to make sure this state-of-the-art facility is around for many years to come,” said Baumann. The Intake Room is used for animal evaluations, vaccinations, and veterinarian visits. The Humane Society moved into their new facility in January.
