echnology in the classroom
is just a sign of the everchanging
needs of our
schools and communities.
To meet those needs, the Community
Foundation of Southern Wisconsin
encourages donors, and school and
community leaders to consider the power
of endowment funds. We only need look
at our own history to make our case.
Twenty-plus years after our founding,
grants and scholarships from
endowments at the Community Foundation reach into every segment of our
communities opening doors and changing lives.
The Community Foundation supports communities in nine counties –
Crawford, Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Rock, Sauk, Vernon and Walworth.
Matching personal philanthropy with community need through endowment
building in this area is our mission.
We can all give back to our community by contributing to Community
Foundation endowed funds that will give forward to all future generations—
for good for ever.
Green County Humane Society Endowment
Endowment Supports New Animal Shelter
Fund
P
Goes Hand in Hand with Capital Campaign
lanning for the future was important to the
project leaders of the new Green County
Humane Society building. With long-term
needs in mind, they proposed a nearly 14,000
square foot building, more than four times the
size of the Society’s old facility. Planning for the support
and maintenance of their upgraded operations was
important, too. So before construction began, they created
an endowment fund.
“Any 501(c )(3) needs assurance that it can maintain itself in
the future,” said John Baumann, chair of the Humane
Society’s capital campaign. “I really feel the endowment is
an insurance policy for the long-term survival of the
organization.”
In addition, Baumann believed that the $900,000 capital
for the GCHS Endowment Fund to Linda
Gebhardt, left, and Ron Spielman, right.
campaign would have more success if leaders showed the foresight to create the endowment right away. “Some
key stakeholders wanted assurance of the Humane
Society’s staying power,” he said. “The
endowment gave donors confidence in the capital
campaign.”
Bauman, the CEO of Colony Brands of Monroe, led
by example. Last December, Colony Brands made
a gift of $400,000 to the Green County Humane
Society Endowment Fund. In addition, Colony
Brands employees selected the Endowment Fund
as the recipient of $27,000 of their earned service
allocations.
“We want to make sure this state-of-the-art facility
is around for many years to come,” said Baumann.
DeJaynes, right, veterinarian, finish an exam on a resident in the Green
County Humane Society’s new Intake Room. The Intake Room is used
for animal evaluations, vaccinations, and veterinarian visits.
The Humane Society moved into their new facility
in January. The endowment fund stands as a ready
resource ensuring that the Society can carry out its
mission of advocacy for companion animals far into
the future.
High School Students Learn to Invest and Give
Monroe
M
High School Alumnus Supports Investment Education
Bob Olson
onroe High School Alumnus Bob Olson thought it was important for students to learn how to be
both good investors and good philanthropists. So he created an endowment fund that allows
Monroe High School (MHS) students to do both.
Formed in 2006, the MHS Investment Club recommends investments for the $30,000 endowment
created by Olson and makes grant awards from the Fund. The grants, made in accordance with the Community
Foundation’s spending policy, have supported Project Lead the Way classes at the high school, a nonprofit child care
Monica Sefcik, MHS Investment
Club member, shows off the first
hard copy of an annual report
received by the Club.
center and homeless families in Monroe.
Just like the grant-making, the Club’s investment activities are not a simulation.
“My vision for the Club was to not only include the stock selection process, but to use real
money,” said Olson, a retired paper company executive.
The result is some dramatic real-world experiences for club members. An investment in
AMCORE a few years ago came to nothing when the bank and trust company was shut down
and sold. But recent investments in AT&T, Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer have yielded high
returns.
The ups and downs of the fund’s portfolio do not bother Olson, who does not intervene in
the Club’s investment decisions. “I hope that they would learn that it is part of the risk and
reward process that goes along with investing,” he said. “It is a gradual learning process
that I hope will stay with these young people as they enter the adult world. Then, they can
decide for themselves if they want to be an investor.”
Creating a Fund
Creating a fund with the Community Foundation is an easy and efficient way to manage your charitable giving. Donors can both
personalize the fund and enjoy a variety of benefits from their Community Foundation affiliation.
Fund creators have many choices. You may set up your fund with stocks, bonds, real estate, personal property or cash. You may
name your fund for you, your family or business, or in honor of any person or organization you choose. You recommend uses for
the fund, supporting the causes and organizations you care about most.
In return, you receive tax benefits in the year your gift is made. The Community Foundation handles all the administrative details
and, in accordance with our investment policy, issues grants to charities in the name of the fund you establish.
If you create an endowment, your gift and all of its future earnings becomes a permanent source of capital benefiting your
community causes forever.
support from the Blanchardville/Hollandale Area Fund, Ryan
Hotel Park was dedicated. The park commemorates the history of the hotel,
built in 1904, while adding beauty and function to a historic and visible corner
of the downtown.
Nonprofit organizations are always
welcome to apply for grants from
any of the Community Foundation
2012-2013
Spirit of Philanthropy Awards
annual Spirit of Philanthropy Awards recognize Foundation volunteers who lead and live philanthropic
lives. Recipients are honored for giving consistently and generously of their time and resources, for
making things happen in their communities, and for encouraging others to do likewise. Awards are given
in each of the Community Foundation’s three service regions.
Green/Lafayette Award Winner: Charlie Baumann
Charlie Baumann, of Monroe, has a heart for education. So much so that a few
years ago, Baumann left his executive position at Colony Brands to become a
math teacher at Monroe Middle School.
But Baumann’s commitment to education doesn’t end in the classroom. For
the past three years, he has chaired the annual “Steak ‘n Shake” fundraiser for
the Monroe Excellence in Education (EIE) Fund bringing in more than $40,000
for the Fund.
“Charlie’s organizational and business skills make this the easiest fundraising
event to put together in our area,” said Linda Gebhardt, Green/Lafayette donor services representative.
In addition to chairing “Steak ‘n Shake,” Baumann is serving his second three-year term as a Monroe EIE advisory
board member and just completed a term as the Fund’s chair. Last year the Monroe EIE Fund awarded more
than $13,000 in grant support for educational programs in the Monroe School District, the most of any education
fund in the Community Foundation’s nine-county service area. Among the awards was a grant that provides for
an iPad for every Monroe sixth grader.
"Getting involved with EIE was a no-brainer,” said Baumann, whose education advocacy efforts began with a
school referendum initiative of a few years ago. “I was aware of the need for funds to support innovative
projects and teaching strategies. With two of my own kids in the Monroe school system, putting my efforts
toward EIE was a natural.”
Charlie Baumann, pictured
above with Linda Gebhardt, was
recognized for his leadership of
the Monroe Excellence in
Education Fund and its annual
“Steak and Shake” fundraiser
which has raised more than
$40,000 for the Fund.
Southwest Award Recipient: Cindy Tang
Cindy Tang, above right, was recognized
for her leadership of the PHS Scholarship
Fund. Tang also serves on the boards of
the Platteville Community Fund and the
Donors to new or existing funds held by the
Community Foundation have many choices in how
they give.
Gifts of cash are the most popular and can be made
by check or credit card. Checks to any existing fund
may always be sent to the Community Foundation’s
Janesville office, 26 S. Jackson St., Janesville, WI
53548. Indicate which fund you are supporting. To
make a safe and easy credit card donation, go to
www.cfsw.org and click on the Give Now button.
We also accept many other forms of gifts such as
stocks, bonds, real estate, and personal property.
Donors also may transfer assets accumulated in a
qualified retirement plan or IRA account.
Another way to give to the Community Foundation
is to make a bequest in your will. You may wish to
designate a set amount or a percentage of your
estate to one or more charitable funds of your
choosing. Giving from an estate may include
options of additional resources such as life
insurance.
We are always happy to discuss gift options and
potential tax benefits with you and your
professional advisor. Contact Linda Gebhardt at
Students Take
Outside
N
ew Glarus sixth graders enjoyed an annual three-day
field trip to Wyalusing State Park and Stonefield Village
last spring, thanks, in part, to the support of the
New Glarus Excellence in Education Fund. The students
explored Wisconsin history, the natural environment and the
geography of the area they live in.
“During this time, we are able to work with the students in ways we
cannot if we are at school,” said Ken Brunner, sixth grade teacher.
“What we have learned is that many of our students had little
knowledge of what life was like living in Wisconsin when it was first
settled.”
Extending learning opportunities beyond the classroom door is part
of the mission of Excellence in Education funds. Consider giving
your local EIE your support this year.
