We are called to fulfill the Great Commission and that begins right here in our back yard. We also strive to inspire, lift up, encourage and help equip our brothers and sisters in Christ in order that they might be all that God has called them to be. For those in need, we want them to know that they are not alone and strive to provide a listing of Christian outreach ministries who desire to be of assistance. It’s so important that Jesus be in all aspects of our life … not only in our churches, but also in our schools, in our work, in all of our daily thoughts and actions. I enjoyed those deadlines. They gave me structure, a point of purpose, and at times a little stress. I’ve always done well when working on things at the last minute. Some people say that “I work well under pressure.” Until today, as I was writing this article, I would of said that I agreed with that. That was the old me. Now a days, I rely on God to help me. I rely on His timing and His purpose. I’m sure you’ve heard plenty of people share how God seems to do things at the very last minute. Whatever they might be going through, whatever they might be praying for ... God comes through, He does what He promised ... but it is at the very last minute. I know I can say I’ve seen that plenty of times in my life. Take for instance the publishing of The Church Guide. I purposely do not like to work on any of the pages, layout or design until the very last moment. Maybe the last five days of the month. I like to wait upon the Lord. I like to see what He is going to do that month with His newspaper. I like for whatever appears in the paper to be fresh from Him. Good news from the Holy Spirit. It is not that I like to work under pressure, because to work under pressure is to rely on your own devices. I’m not under pressure. I’m just waiting to see what God is going to do, and how He is going to use me that month. Typically, I give myself the last five days of the month to put out the following month’s issue of The Church Guide. But it never works out that way. I might give myself five days, you know just in case something happens ... well something ALWAYS happens. Somehow every single month something occurs to steal my time away from me. Some people have even told me that the devil is trying to stop me from publishing, because whatever I am preparing is scaring him and he’s trying to stop it from printing. I don’t know about that. If I don’t know what I’m publishing until God shows me, how in the world does the devil know. What I do know is that God ALWAYS shows up. Yes, like you, I used to say He showed up at the very last moment. But that’s not true. It’s all in God’s timing. And what this old believer has finally learned is that God doesn’t need as much time as I do to get The Church Guide published Thankfully, he always stretches the time a bit because He knows that He’s relying on me to be His hands, feet and mouth. And I’m not that smart and surely not that fast anymore. A few months ago, God told me to publish a paper addressing Suicide ... Choosing Death Over Life. It was one of the most read issues to date. Well two weeks ago, I had no idea what the September issue’s feature story was going to be. But then He shared with me that it would be about depression. It’s a hidden problem in the church, and He wanted to penetrate the darkness. With five days left in the month, I began to organize my files for the September issue. At that time, He told me that I would be writing the feature article about depression on Thursday (I began my five days on a Tuesday). After the first day of laying out what ads and stories would go where, I started by second day with a major surprise .... my computer crashed. It promise to you. would not boot up. I couldn’t get to ANY of my files I needed. I called my good friend David Shepherd for help. He’s a neighbor two doors down, and a man of God. He tried everything he knew for three days, but kept getting messages that files were missing and if we continued we would damage my computer. The old man in me ordered new system operating files (I use Windows XP). You know how hard it is to find brand new operating files with a license that are that old? Well I did and I ordered them off eBay around midnight Wednesday, paid premium for over night shipping because I knew that with the Labor Day weekend approaching, I had to do everything I could to get those files. My timing was critical. (I thought). Well needless to say, the files came late Friday, they didn’t work and after FOUR days of being dead in the water, David gave me a new computer system (new to me, it has Vista ... Ha). So with God’s timing, I have a newer, faster computer, I had all day Thursday to write the article in this paper for Him (what am I saying, He did most of it) ... and by 8 pm Saturday, I had all my fonts loaded and I was ready to go. You are holding the paper in your hands aren’t you. that’s my God for ya!

I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord.” ~ Jeremiah 29:12-14 Have you recently said any of the following: “Oh, your grandma is sick? I'll pray for her,” or, “Oh – you want to sell your home? I'll keep you in my prayers!” I'm almost sure we have all probably said something along these lines, (and with every intention to follow through,) yet somehow in the end have forgotten to pray for the very things that we agreed to lift up. This is not to condemn anyone, as we can probably all attest to being busy or just forgetting to pray. So what do you do when you have multiple requests, but are rushing from place to place and finding that your prayer time is falling to the wayside? One way to keep this from happening is to set aside time away from all other distractions just to pray. Sign off from Facebook, turn the TV off, and wait for a time when you're all alone. Maybe it's before or after the kids are in bed, or perhaps it's when the house is still quiet before anyone is awake. Whenever it is, make sure that you can find a moment, (or hopefully longer,) when it's just you and God. For myself, I like to pray in the morning when I wake up, as well as before bed. These are the times that I specifically set aside to pray, read my Bible, and listen to God's voice. (That doesn't count all of the times that I pray while driving, at work, or even while in my family room, but you get the idea.) Painting by Norman Rockwell Lauren Holmes Life Coach The word tells us to pray without ceasing, (1 Thessalonians 5:17,) so even if we're not praying out loud, we can always pray silently no matter where we are. If you are looking for some extra time just for prayer, this month, the Crisis Pregnancy Center of Tidewater is hosting a 24 hour prayer gathering, and it will be a wonderful time to come out and lift up requests of all kinds. It can be day or night, a few minutes or a few hours, or alone or with a group. Join when you can and stay as long as you feel led. Invite others and help to spread the word. Pray at the altar and leave with warm cider or hot cocoa. Since prayer will be going on from Friday, th September 20 at noon to st Saturday, September 21 at noon, you can come during your lunch break, before you go out to eat on Friday night, or on Saturday morning after you run the kids to soccer practice or swim lessons. While individual prayer is powerful too, sometimes it's nice just to come together as a group in prayer, so this will be a wonderful opportunity to join forces in lifting up life as well as any other requests before our Lord. According to reliable statistics, only about 11% of the world's population is willing to claim Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. 38% of the world has heard the gospel but has not accepted Christ yet. Over 50% of the world's population (or 3.5 billion people) has not heard the gospel and most of them do not have a realistic opportunity to hear the gospel. Approximately 60% of the world's people groups have no church, no Bible, and no Christian literature. Gene Strickland, founder of Evangelism International, a Gospel Crusade ministry based here in Hampton Roads, is currently in last minute preparations for a great Gospel Crusade in Southeast Asia. This crusade is scheduled for September 17-18. Last year in a small town of that region 14,389 accepted Christ at one of their crusades.
