Special Events
In addition to the technical sessions and symposia, special events included:
• The Wizards of Chemistry Show, by Dr. Herb Bryce
(Seattle Central Community College, Emeritus) and Mr.
Tim Hoyt (University of Puget Sound), which served as a
public event to open NORM 2009 on Sunday evening
June 28. The show was very well-received and
attendance was excellent. Photos are available at this

• A Chem Demo Exchange by the PLU ACS
Student Affiliate Chapter and supported by a
grant from the ACS Office of Undergraduate
Programs. The focus was on demonstrations
that utilized green chemistry techniques and
household chemicals.
• The Women Chemists Committee (WCC) and Diversity Committee (DC)
Luncheon was organized by Dr. Stacia Rink (Pacific Lutheran University), and
featured Dr. Dharshi Bopegedera (The Evergreen State College). Dr.
Bopegedera’s, keynote speech, entitled “Women Inspiring Women and Men! –
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow” was about women who have inspired others to
be better scientists and citizens, with the hope that the future generation of
chemists will aspire to be better citizens of the world. The luncheon was a
