Ed. TESOL, has been teaching all aspects of ESL to college students and adults for over 20 years. She is on the QCC staff of the CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP) and has been an adjunct instructor in several colleges in the Metro NY area. Stephen B. Horowitz, Esq. specializes in legal, business, and new media communications as well as ESL. He lived in Japan for 3.5 years during which time he worked for two Japanese law firms, studied law at a Japanese university, and taught English in Japan’s public school system. The A’s: Academic Skills English for Academic & Professional Purposes See Below Spring 2013 Schedule Designed with the adult “returning to college” in mind, this course gives advanced non-native speakers of English the opportunity to enrich their vocabulary and reading and writing skills necessary for college courses and careers. Topics: improving vocabulary, making inferences, summarizing, reading and writing various genres of non-fiction, essays and personal narratives. Each class begins with a discussion of topics, followed by reading and then time in the computer lab to develop students’ own work. The B’s: Business Skills Business Communication See Below Spring 2013 Schedule Learn how to make presentations, write e-mails, improve phone skills, and engage in negotiations in a business setting. Improve collaboration, writing, reading, conversation, and presentation skills. Topics include: marketing, finance, human resources, and job searching. Business Law Offered Fall 2013 Study and discuss basic business law concepts, including contracts, litigation, and bankruptcy. Legal English & American Legal Culture Offered Fall 2013 Study and discuss the basic concepts of American law and legal culture, including the legal thinking, jury system, immigration, and legal humor. The C’s: Communications Skills Phone Communication See Below Spring 2013 Schedule Learn vocabulary, phrases and etiquette in English for talking on the phone in a variety of situations, especially in business and professional settings. Practice greetings, ending a call, requesting information, taking a message, leaving a message/voicemails, etc. Understand how to use strategies and appropriate English to help with difficult calls, such as calls to a large government agency, a bank or an insurance company. New Media Writing & Publishing Offered Summer 2013 Improve your English by creating, writing for, and publishing an online magazine. Students will work together to develop themes and article ideas and will then create the content (i.e., conduct interviews, do research, and write and edit articles) for a real online publication that they publish themselves. Students receive intensive instruction in academic reading, writing, and pre-college math, and are provided academic and personal advising, preparing them for the CUNY Placement tests and college-level work. To apply for CLIP, the student must first apply to CUNY and be admitted to one of the CUNY colleges for a degree or certificate program. CLIP prepares ESL students for college level work in English.
