National Walk to School Week
Lets Walk to School Together!
Walk to School week is an action packed week that takes place in May each
year as part of a National Walking Month.
The theme for this year’s walk to school week is “Lets Walk to School Together”
Walking is a great way to keep active. As a nation, our lifestyles are getting less
active, so building walking into our daily routine, like walking to school or work, is
really important.
Walking is a truly sustainable way of getting around. We’re becoming a car
dominated society, and we are struggling with the daily problems of air pollution
and congestion as well as starting to see the impact of 200 years of growing
carbon emissions.
Getting cars off the road has obvious environmental benefits, it can also help
with the fight against childhood obesity. Currently only around half of seven to
eleven year olds are doing the recommended one hour of moderate physical
activity a day and the number of children travelling to school by car has doubled
over the last 20 years. So it is essential to get kids moving. The journey to and
from school is the perfect place to start.
