Any tips on how not to screw<br />

up?<br />

Well, you can try to keep some <strong>in</strong>fo<br />

out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public doma<strong>in</strong>, keep your<br />

FB page very, very blank, don’t show<br />

your friends and bus<strong>in</strong>ess networks,<br />

etc. I’d also suggest th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

strongly about privacy when mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess deals. Similarly, many<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>esses use Micros<strong>of</strong>t as an operat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

system for encrypt<strong>in</strong>g even<br />

though <strong>the</strong> NSA spieshave a very<br />

easy way <strong>in</strong> through <strong>the</strong> back door.<br />

So, if you’re really serious about<br />

keep<strong>in</strong>g your <strong>in</strong>fo safe, I’d suggest<br />

switch<strong>in</strong>g to open-source systems<br />

such as L<strong>in</strong>ux.<br />

Com<strong>in</strong>g back to phones and<br />

call<strong>in</strong>g, what’s <strong>the</strong> best way to<br />

achieve privacy <strong>the</strong>re?<br />

This is when you become really paranoid<br />

(laughs). The smartphones<br />

have a GPS <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> battery<br />

so <strong>the</strong>y can track you wherever you<br />

are. Most people th<strong>in</strong>k that if you<br />

switch it <strong>of</strong>f, it’s <strong>of</strong>f. It can actually<br />

still be live and record<strong>in</strong>g. So<br />

some will take out <strong>the</strong> battery. The<br />

problem is, if <strong>the</strong>y’re really at you,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y’ll have <strong>in</strong>stalled a second small<br />

battery that is still runn<strong>in</strong>g for about<br />

15 m<strong>in</strong>utes. So, if you’re do<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g really confidential, make<br />

sure you leave your mobile phone<br />

at home.<br />

If you want to be secure with communicat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to ano<strong>the</strong>r person, get<br />

brand new SIM cards and telephones<br />

just for that conversation.<br />

Don’t use it for anyth<strong>in</strong>g else.<br />

Are major bus<strong>in</strong>ess leaders<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se precautions, when,<br />

for <strong>in</strong>stance, discuss<strong>in</strong>g mergers<br />

and acquisitions?<br />

If <strong>the</strong>y’re serious about it, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

should. But most leaders don’t<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k that way. Bus<strong>in</strong>esses should<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itely be more aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

privacy factor. Occasionally you<br />

hear on <strong>the</strong> news about some<br />

confidential talk <strong>in</strong> a low-key motel.<br />

Sometimes <strong>the</strong>y’d even switch <strong>the</strong><br />

rooms just prior to <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g, or<br />

close <strong>the</strong> curta<strong>in</strong>s to cut out any<br />

listen<strong>in</strong>g through <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dow with<br />

lasers <strong>in</strong>tercept<strong>in</strong>g vibrations. It<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicates that <strong>the</strong>y’re quite aware <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> spy<strong>in</strong>g risk.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reasons you left MI5<br />

was because <strong>the</strong>y didn’t share<br />

your ethics values. What should<br />

one do if such a discrepancy is<br />

happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a company?<br />

It’s very difficult to change <strong>the</strong> organizational<br />

culture that’s pressured<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st you. You raisie <strong>the</strong>se issues<br />

with <strong>the</strong> management, but <strong>the</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

just shut you <strong>of</strong>f. It’s endemic.<br />

You can see it even on <strong>the</strong> scale <strong>of</strong><br />

what Snowden has done. The NSA<br />

isn’t say<strong>in</strong>g, OK, we’ve done some<br />

bad stuff and maybe we should redo<br />

it; <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>the</strong>y’re clos<strong>in</strong>g ranks.<br />

I’m not say<strong>in</strong>g you shouldn’t jo<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se organizations; just be aware<br />

<strong>of</strong> where you’re pull<strong>in</strong>g yourself <strong>in</strong><br />

to.<br />

Obviously, you can’t always<br />

whistleblow all <strong>the</strong> small ethics<br />

violations. At which po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

should one just conform and<br />

accept <strong>the</strong> reality?<br />

Depends on your country and <strong>the</strong><br />

company. Becom<strong>in</strong>g a whistleblower<br />

will change your life, s<strong>in</strong>ce people<br />

will notice it and, effectively, you<br />

become unemployable.<br />

Thankfully, sometimes <strong>the</strong>y’d have<br />

whistleblow<strong>in</strong>g protections <strong>in</strong>stalled.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g said that, none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people<br />

who have called out <strong>the</strong> corruption<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> London bank<strong>in</strong>g sector have<br />

managed to stay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

They all admit be<strong>in</strong>g persecuted for<br />

violat<strong>in</strong>g some certa<strong>in</strong> confidentiality<br />

agreement. Those who ask<br />

questions tend to leave; <strong>the</strong> dull<br />

ones progress up <strong>the</strong> career ladder.<br />

What is <strong>the</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g reason<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> policy <strong>of</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

whistleblower protection loose?<br />

The lack <strong>of</strong> political will almost<br />

always comes from bus<strong>in</strong>ess lobby.<br />

Yet it’s culture, as well. My parents<br />

generation would expect to have a<br />

job for life. The old way <strong>of</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>telligence secrets was simply to<br />

make it a part <strong>of</strong> a life-long culture.<br />

Charles Strauss talks about this <strong>in</strong><br />

his articles on <strong>in</strong>telligence security.<br />

In this market, however, people are<br />

expected to hop around from company<br />

to company. The concept <strong>of</strong><br />

whistleblow<strong>in</strong>g is go<strong>in</strong>g to get much<br />

more common, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly difficult<br />

to control, and lead to a cultural<br />

shift over <strong>the</strong> years.<br />

How important and widespread<br />

is spy<strong>in</strong>g on your ma<strong>in</strong> competitors?<br />

I was once told <strong>in</strong> a guest<br />

lecture that Samsung guys<br />

know all <strong>the</strong>re is to know about<br />

Apple products and f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

numbers...<br />

I th<strong>in</strong>k it’s blatantly obvious if you<br />

look at <strong>the</strong> products (laughs).<br />

Industrial espionage is as old as<br />

government espionage. It is <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

easier now, as you can hack your<br />

way <strong>in</strong>to computer systems, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese have been do<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

American trade secrets.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> best way to conduct<br />

it is via human sources,<br />

<strong>the</strong> ‘plants’ <strong>in</strong> competitor<br />

companies. There’s<br />

probably one or two <strong>in</strong><br />

each company, quite high<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> organization structure.<br />

This has been happen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> oil<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry for a very long time.<br />
