2. Application of <strong>LRIT</strong><br />

2.1. <strong>The</strong> <strong>LRIT</strong> requirements entered into force on 01 January 2008 and the<br />

requirement to fit a shipborne <strong>LRIT</strong> equipment is applicable to the following<br />

Bahamian registered ships/units engaged on international voyages:<br />

Cargo ships, including High Speed craft of 300 1 gross tonnage and above,<br />

Passenger ships, including High Speed passenger craft,<br />

Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODU) that are propelled by mechanical<br />

means,<br />

Offshore Support Vessels, Special Purpose Ships and Mobile Offshore Units<br />

(MOU) of 300 gross tonnage and above that are propelled by mechanical<br />

means,<br />

Commercial yachts of 300 gross tonnage and above.<br />

2.2. <strong>The</strong>re is a phased process for ships to comply with these requirements. <strong>The</strong><br />

compliance date is dependent on one or more of the following:<br />

1. Date of construction,<br />

2. Operating GMDSS sea area,<br />

3. Date of radio related survey.<br />

All parties are particularly guided to the reference to the radio related survey as<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Bahamas</strong> requires any applicable vessel to comply by the due date of the<br />

radio related survey after 31 st December 2008 or after 01 July 2009 if the<br />

vessel is only operating in GMDSS sea area A4.<br />

2.3 Taking into consideration the provisions of MSC.1.Circ.1290 and for the purpose<br />

of <strong>LRIT</strong> implementation, the first radio related survey due date is deemed to be<br />

the due date of first renewal or periodical survey of the radio installations<br />

(whichever of the two surveys becomes due first) after the compliance date<br />

specified in 2.2. <strong>The</strong> first radio related survey date is not altered as:<br />

a result of the transfer of flag to <strong>The</strong> <strong>Bahamas</strong>, OR<br />

a consequence of any scheduled or unscheduled inspections or surveys ,<br />

OR<br />

any additional or occasional surveys.<br />

the International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships 1969<br />
