What Thail<strong>and</strong> is attempt<strong>in</strong>g to do through our current<br />

Education Reform is to provide Thai citizen with <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

process that enables all of <strong>the</strong>m to have equal access to <strong>the</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g lifelong learn<strong>in</strong>g. This will be a major strategy to<br />

solve various social, economic <strong>and</strong> political problems.<br />

This learn<strong>in</strong>g process does not only provide knowledge, but<br />

also <strong>in</strong>tegrates as a part of real life that <strong>in</strong>stills <strong>the</strong> virtue to all<br />

people <strong>in</strong> our society.<br />

I believe that <strong>the</strong> crisis we are currently fac<strong>in</strong>g is <strong>the</strong> balanced<br />

mechanism of <strong>the</strong> nature. Whenever we are too extreme on<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r side, it would sw<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>and</strong>, at <strong>the</strong> same time, cause a<br />

chaos <strong>in</strong> our global community system. To my op<strong>in</strong>ion, one<br />

of our ma<strong>in</strong> concerns here is how we can utilize education as a<br />

means to cope with such chaos. What I am try<strong>in</strong>g to po<strong>in</strong>t out<br />

is that, education should be considered as a major means for<br />

human <strong>in</strong>tellectual, social, <strong>and</strong> ethical development <strong>in</strong> itself,<br />

not only as a tool for economic, social, <strong>and</strong> political<br />

development as be<strong>in</strong>g formerly regarded.<br />

I would like to propose here a conceptual framework for new<br />

directions of education that enables to re<strong>in</strong>force fully<br />

empowerment for “Education for All,” which will br<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

peace to <strong>the</strong> world community. They are:<br />

Education should be <strong>in</strong>tegrated with learners’ way of life.<br />

Apart from <strong>the</strong> globally <strong>and</strong> nationally related content <strong>in</strong><br />

various academic courses, our learners, no matter children<br />

or adults, should have an opportunity to learn about th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

that are responsive to <strong>the</strong>ir actual way of life <strong>in</strong> order that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y can apply <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>the</strong>y learn to upgrade <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

quality of life <strong>and</strong> to develop <strong>the</strong>ir own community. Moreover,<br />

all learners should have a learn<strong>in</strong>g habit <strong>and</strong> a searchful m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

for knowledge <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation from various learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

resources around <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Education provided for our people should be a “Meritcontrolled<br />

Education” which is a part of oriental wisdom. This<br />

school of educational philosophy concentrates on selfpractic<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on primary merit. It will equip people with “Meritled<br />

Knowledge” <strong>and</strong> wisdom to know how to restra<strong>in</strong>
