<strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Award</strong> <strong>Criteria</strong><br />

This criterion should be used as a GUIDELINE when completing the nomination<br />

form for the <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Award</strong>s given out each year at the AU Ball.<br />

General <strong>Criteria</strong><br />

- Any student can be nominated for any club affiliated to the AU as long as they are a full<br />

member of the <strong>Students</strong>’ <strong>Union</strong> and the Athletic <strong>Union</strong><br />

- Where possible, individuals must compete in the name of the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Southampton</strong><br />

and must play for their Athletic <strong>Union</strong> club<br />

- The committee must be selective on all nominations and only put forward who they feel<br />

should deserve a <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Award</strong><br />

- The nominations must include activities/representation for this year, dating back to last<br />

year’s AU Ball and does include the summer<br />

- Although an individual may meet the criteria it is the discretion of the <strong>Colours</strong> Committee<br />

to decide who is awarded a <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Award</strong>s and students will not automatically receive<br />

<strong>Colours</strong> if they have reached the required standards<br />

Club <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Criteria</strong><br />

- AU Club <strong>Colours</strong> are awarded for an individual’s continued commitment, effort and work<br />

in ensuring the improvement or continuing success of an AU club. They will have gone<br />

above and beyond their duties within the club and without them their club would not be<br />

where it is today. (Note that these awards will not be presented at the AU <strong>Award</strong>s Ball but<br />

they will be presented at the individual club AGMs).<br />

Half <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Criteria</strong><br />

- Half colours nominations should be based on playing proficiency only<br />

- Nominations should be for students who have played 75% of all 1st team competitions for<br />

the current season (Special circumstances may be considered for a 2nd Team member)<br />

- Half <strong>Colours</strong> may be awarded for achieving one of the following;<br />

o Top 8 finish in National Student Competition (Consistently top 8 if league format)<br />

o Top 3 Finish in a Regional (Non-Student) Competition<br />

o Top 16 in a National (Non-Student) Competition<br />

o Selection for a Student Regional Team (i.e. South-East)<br />

o Selection for a Senior (Non-Student) County Team (i.e. Hampshire)<br />

o Reaching the final round of a BUCS National Trial<br />

o Being the Key member of a team that reaches a Student National Final Game<br />

(i.e. The BUAFL National Championships Game for American Football)<br />

o Further achievements for specific sports are found in further regulations


Alternative Half <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Criteria</strong> for Specific Sports<br />

- Men’s Archery – Handicap of 40 or better<br />

- Women’s Archery – Handicap of 50 or better<br />

- Athletics & Cross Country – Latest AA Senior Grade II standard<br />

- Boat Club – Top 8 at Henley Regatta or equivalent<br />

- Men’s Football – Consistently playing for a team at FA Step 8 or above<br />

- Hockey – Consistently playing for a team in the top division of the South Hockey League<br />

- Judo – Should be at least a brown belt (as well as meeting other criteria)<br />

- Rifle – Average of 95.5 or better (based on aggregate averages)<br />

- Road Cycling – Elite British Cycling Federation Licence<br />

- Rugby – Consistently playing for a team in London 2 leagues or higher<br />

- Skydive – Top 3 at a BCPA National Event in a single discipline<br />

- Squash – Consistent high performance in the Hampshire 1st Division<br />

- Men’s Ten Pin Bowling – Average of 175 or better (from 18 matches or more)<br />

- Women’s Ten Pin Bowling – Average of 155 or better (from 18 matches or more)<br />

- Tennis – LTA rating of 3.2 or better<br />

Full <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>Criteria</strong><br />

- Full colours nominations should be based on playing proficiency only<br />

- Nominations should be for students who have played 75% of all 1st team competitions for<br />

the last TWO seasons<br />

- Full <strong>Colours</strong> may be awarded for achieving one of the following;<br />

o Top 3 finish in a National Student Competition (Consistently top 8 if league<br />

format)<br />

o Top 8 in a National (Non-Student) Competition<br />

o Selection for a British Universities Team<br />

o Selection for a Senior National Team (i.e. England)<br />

o Further achievements for specific sports are found in further regulations<br />

Alternative <strong>Criteria</strong> for Specific Sports<br />

- Men’s Archery – Handicap of 30 or better<br />

- Women’s Archery – Handicap of 40 or better<br />

- Athletics & Cross Country – Latest AA Senior Grade I standard<br />

- Boat Club – Win at Henley Regatta or equivalent<br />

- Men’s Football – Consistently playing for a team at FA Step 6 or above<br />

- Hockey – Consistently playing for a team in the England Hockey League<br />

- Judo – Should be at least a black belt (as well as meeting other criteria)<br />

- Lacrosse – Regularly playing for the Senior Southern Lacrosse team<br />

- Rifle – Average of 96.5 or better (based on aggregate averages)<br />

- Road Cycling – Elite British Cycling Federation Licence<br />

- Rugby – Consistently playing for a team in National Division 3 leagues or higher<br />

- Squash – Consistent high performance in the Hampshire Premier Division<br />

- Men’s Ten Pin Bowling – Average of 195 or better (from 18 matches or more)<br />

- Women’s Ten Pin Bowling – Average of 175 or better (from 18 matches or more)<br />

- Tennis – LTA rating of 2.1 or better
