ANDREI SAKHAROV: A FREE MAN 

Andreï Sakharov¿s life plunges us into the major struggles of the 20th century as 

well as into Russia¿s present-day issues. 

AndreiSakharovjoinedaresearchgroupin1948thatwasassignedtobuildnuclearweapons.In 

1953,theyinventedtheSovietHbombanduntil1962,theirworkwasusedtodesignandbuildall 

nucleararms.Yet,Sakharovbegantobeconcernedwiththeimplicationshisworkhadonthefuture 

ofhumanityandhetriedtoalertotherstothedangerofthenucleararmsrace.Hiseffortswerepaidoff 

inpartwiththesigningoftheNuclearNon-ProliferationTreatyin1968.Inthe70s,Sakharovcreated 

acommitteeforthedefenseofhumanrightsandthedefenseofthevictimsofpoliticaltrials.These 

effortswouldearnhimtheNobelPeacePrizein1975.FollowinghiscriticismofSovietleadersin1979, 

Sakharovwasrelievedofhisprivilegesanddemote.HewassenttointernalexileinthecityofGorky 

andkeptundertightKGBsurveillancefrom1980to1986.Hewasinitiallydemotedthenbanished 

becausehebrazenlychallengedtheliesanddefiedthedictatorship.Arebelallhislife,Sakharov 

wasafearlesshumanrightsactivist(hewasamongthefirsttodenouncetheSovietAfghanWar),and 

adefenderofpersonalfreedoms.Hisscientificandpoliticalcontributionshaveearnedhimaplacein 

the20-centuryhistorybooks,bothinRussiaandthroughouttheworld.TotellSakharov'sstoryisto 

drawclosertothelifeofarighteousman,whoismournedwithabitterconscienceinhiscountry.It 

alsoprovidesperspectiveoncurrenteventsinRussiaandChechnya,andunderscoreshisstruggles.

In, 1978 the kidnapping and sequestration of Aldo Moro sent a veritable shockwave 

through Italian television. 

Theywerebetween20and30yearsold,andhailedfromMilan,RomeandReggio-Emilia.Somewere 

students,othersfactoryworkers,andoneofthembelongedtoaruralfarmingcommunity.OnMarch 

16th1978,inaRomeundersiege,nineofthemmanagedtoblocktheconvoyofoneofItaly'smost 

prestigiouspoliticalleaders,AldoMoro,killhisbodyguards,kidnaphimandshuthimupinwhatthey 

calleda"people'sprison".ThissymboloftheItalianstatewastobeheldinconfinementfor55days. 

Thisshatteringevent,summingupinitselfthewholeperiodofItaly's"leadenyears",wasparadoxically 

tosoundthedeath-knellofamovementthathad,tenyearspreviously,setarmedrevolutionasits 

goal,inordertocreateamorejustsocietybymeansofarmedconfrontationwiththeItaliancapital, 

institutionsandStateThisdocumentaryanalysesthiseventfromwithintheRedBrigademovement,
