The new Grand Master of the Order of <strong>Malta</strong>:<br />
Fra‘ Matthew Festing<br />
Fra’ Matthew Festing (58) is the 79th Grand Master of the<br />
Sovereign Order of <strong>Malta</strong>. On 11 March 2008 in Rome, the<br />
Sovereign Council elected him as the second Englishman,<br />
in a row, to spearhead the oldest clerical Order of knights of<br />
the world.<br />
Fra’ Matthew joined the Order of <strong>Malta</strong> in 1977 and in 1991<br />
became a Professed Knight, taking religious vows. He is the<br />
son of a British Field Marshal and spent his childhood in<br />
<strong>Malta</strong> and Singapore as well as other countries. He stu<strong>di</strong>ed<br />
history in Cambridge and worked for an international art<br />
auction house for many years. In 1993, he was elected the<br />
first Grand Prior in England since the reformation.<br />
Accor<strong>di</strong>ng to the constitution of the Order of <strong>Malta</strong>, the<br />
Grand Master as Head of the Order and Sovereign, has to be<br />
completely devoted to the development of the worldwide Order and its works and has to be an example to all members of the Order<br />
regar<strong>di</strong>ng the fulfilment of the religious duties. The Grand Master carries out the highest authority. The Catholic Church awards him<br />
the rank of a car<strong>di</strong>nal. The Grand Master resides at the Order’s seat of government in Rome.<br />
The Order of <strong>Malta</strong><br />
The Order of St. John of Jerusalem was founded in 1099 in Jerusalem and is a sovereign subject of international law and the oldest<br />
order of knights of the Catholic Church. It has representatives in more than 50 countries and <strong>di</strong>plomatic relations with 100 states and<br />
is a Permanent Observer to the United Nations, the European Union and numerous other international organisations. The Order is<br />
active in 120 countries worldwide with hospitals, rescue and me<strong>di</strong>cal services and other social and charitable establishments. With<br />
its 12,500 members, around 80,000 specially trained voluntary helpers and 13,000 employees, the Order of <strong>Malta</strong> provides help and<br />
assistance for people in need. <strong>Malteser</strong> <strong>International</strong> is the worldwide relief agency of the Sovereign Order of <strong>Malta</strong> for humanitarian<br />
aid. Currently, 20 national associations/priories of the Order are members of <strong>Malteser</strong> <strong>International</strong>.<br />
