150 TH START - Roush Fenway Racing will make Sprint Cup start #150 at Dover this
weekend. The team has 149 starts and eight wins, six poles, 43 top-five and 68 top-10
finishes at the track.
Three of Roush Fenway’s five entries finished inside the top 10 at Dover in the Spring,
including the team’s two “Chase” entries. Greg Biffle finished third, Matt Kenseth fourth
and Carl Edwards seventh.
HIGHEST AVERAGE FINISHER - Of the 12 “Chase” drivers, Carl Edwards has the
highest average finishing position at Dover – 7.6. Only four of the “Chase” drivers have
average finishing positions in the top 10 at Dover, both Edwards and Biffle (10.6) are
included in the four (Ryan Newman and Jimmie Johnson are the other two).
Roush Fenway drivers know how to win at the Monster Mile. The team has accrued
the most Sprint Cup wins at Michigan (11) followed by Bristol (10) and Dover (8). The
team’s wins shake out as follows: Mark Martin (fall ’97, ’98, ’99 and spring ’04); Greg
Biffle (spring ’05 and fall ’08); Matt Kenseth (spring ’06) and Carl Edwards (fall ’07).
For five years running, a Roush Fenway driver has won a Sprint Cup race at Dover –
Martin in 2004, Biffle in 2005, Kenseth in 2006, Edwards in 2007 and Biffle again in
2008. This is the longest running streak of its kind at Dover.
LEADING THE WAY - The Roush Fenway Ford’s have led more laps at Dover than
any other track with a total of 3,559.
In the fall of 2008, Roush Fenway Ford’s finished first, second and third. In a
phenomenal race for the win, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards battled it out
swapping positions several times in the closing laps before the checkered flag waved
over the No. 16 3M Ford with the No. 17 and No. 99 right on his heels.
Five of the team’s eight wins came during the fall race.
In Their Words…
Here are a few thoughts from Roush Fenway “Chase” contenders Greg Biffle and
Carl Edwards as the duo prepares for what is likely to be one of the closest
“Chase’s” in history.
No. 16 3M driver GREG BIFFLE on the “Chase”:
Q: How nice is it to have a clean slate in the points?
A: “It feels really good to start over. There’s so much pressure to get in this thing and now
that we’re in it, just go for it and get the best finishes we can and try to get the points lead.”
Q: Is there pressure knowing you have to almost be perfect in the “Chase”?
A: “Yeah, you have to be perfect. No excuses and no mistakes, and we’re prepared to do
that.”
Q: How prepared is your team for the “Chase”?
A: “It’s obvious we have only two wins as a company, and that’s unusual for us, but I feel
like we’re gaining on it and this weekend is a great opportunity for one of our cars to get in
Victory Lane.”
Q: Does anybody have an edge going into the “Chase”?
A: “I really think, if you look across the board, I really think that everybody really, truly has
the same opportunity right now. I really do. I don’t feel like anybody’s really got an
advantage because in my perception the 14 (Tony Stewart) hasn’t run as well as they had
when they were kind of on that firestorm of going like crazy; the 48 (Jimmie Johnson) is
competitive, but as somebody mentioned, maybe not performing up to their own
standards, I guess. I would say they’re still doing a pretty damn good job myself, but then
you see Brian Vickers and he’s running extremely well. He ran extremely well at Atlanta
and ran well at Richmond, and I think the same with us. We’ve been able to pull out two
good finishes after not running so well. I don’t think we’re far off from being competitive
and challenging for the win. I think if you look at the 12 guys, I don’t know that you could
pick a favorite. I don’t know that you could count any one of them out.”
Las Vegas Motor Speedway; September 25-26
In Their Words continued…
No. 99 Aflac driver CARL EDWARDS on the “Chase”:
Q: Who is the favorite this year?
A: “I think Jimmie (Johnson) is the favorite. He has to be. He’s shown that he can do it,
but the last couple of days we’ve spent a little time up in New York with all the guys and
when you really look at the group this year, I think that this is wide open. Anyone can win
this thing. I think Juan (Pablo) Montoya has just as good a chance as Jimmie Johnson
with the way he’s been running. Brian (Vickers) has scored more points than anyone the
last 10 races and there’s nothing saying he couldn’t do that again. And then you look at
Greg (Biffle) and myself. Last year, we put together a really strong chase and nobody
expected Greg to come out and win the first two and be that fast. Yeah, he’s the favorite
(Johnson), but I think this is going to be a real interesting one. It has that feeling to me.”
Q: Is this redemption time for you (since you have not won this year), or a feeling
like ‘if we haven’t done it by now, we’re not going to do it’?
A: “No, it’s definitely not the latter. It does not matter what you did last week. It doesn’t
matter what you did the last 26 weeks. This is a second chance here (the ‘Chase’). This
is a new beginning. For the same reason you can’t look at last season and say who is
going to be in the chase this year, you can’t look at the first part of the season and say
who is going to be strong in the last 10. Really, this isn’t lip service. It really has the feel
that any one of these 12 guys can win this thing. That’s good for me. I want to be that
guy. It seems like the peaks and valleys are a shorter frequency and higher amplitude
right now.”
