VOCABULARY ALERT
Definition of right triangle- A triangle with one right
angle and two acute angles.
Hypotenuse- Opposite side of the right angle, the
longest side of the right triangle
Leg- the side NOT opposite of the right angle.
LOCK
Using the Pythagorean theorem we have :
25 2 + b 2 = 65 2
625 + b 2 = 4225
-625 + 625 + b 2 = -625 + 4225
b 2 = 3600
b = 60
By traveling via oak rd. and Mount Hwy she will
travel 25 + 60 or 85 miles.
If she takes the Airport rd. (Hypotenuse) she will
only travel 65 miles which will save her 85 – 65
or 20 miles.
