The ZCHS Principal’s view:
It is hard to believe that the 2008-09
school year is here. I hope that you
and your children had some time to
relax and have fun this summer. All
of us at ZCHS took at least some time
away to be recharged to greet your
students on the first day of school
with the same excitement that they
bring to the building. We did do a fair
amount of work this summer. Building
projects were finished, cleaning,
and of course hiring new staff members.
The group of staff members we
have added this year is a great group
of individuals that are eager to work
with your children. As principal, I
look forward to seeing them in action
working to help your children grow,
develop, and learn. If your child has
one or more of these new staff members,
I would love for you to welcome
them.
The ZCHS Asst Principal of Student Development’s view:
Welcome back for the 2008-09 school year. I am very excited to be taking on
a new role for me personally, and a new position altogether here at ZCHS. As
Assistant Principal of Student Development, I have the privilege of providing
leadership, oversight, and support to the many wonderful student organizations
of our school. We at ZCHS believe that getting students connected to the
school, their peers, and the faculty will lead to an invaluable enhancement of
the high school experience. I am looking forward to working with students,
parents, and the community to make ZCHS the absolute best place for a young
person to be a student!
The ZCHS Asst Principal Freshman Center’s view:
I hope everyone has enjoyed a positive
and restful summer. We are
really excited to welcome the class
of 2012 to Zionsville Community
High School. We acknowledge up
front that the transition to high
school can be a very stressful experience
for many students; however
we are committed to helping
every student find personal success
with this transition and are confident
that our structure and organization
will ensure a positive start to
the high school career for all students.
Research shows that a good
start academically, emotionally and
socially helps students create positive
connections at school. In turn,
these positive connections lead to a
high level of engagement and
achievement that students will use
as a springboard toward future success.
To assist in this transition, many
freshman students recently participated
in an orientation program led
by approximately 75 upperclassmen
mentors. This day was designed to
help the class of 2012 become more
acclimated to both the physical
building as well as the culture of
Zionsville Community High
School. We believe this leadership
by our upperclassmen helps alleviate
a significant amount of stress
and anxiety over the transition to
high school. In addition, these
same mentor students will be meeting
periodically throughout the
school year with all freshman students
to monitor their assimilation
into ZCHS and assisting them with
their needs.
Please remember that my door is
always open if your son or daughter
experiences anything less than a
positive beginning to the new
school year. I consider it part of my
personal mission to help all students
enjoy a positive experience at
Zionsville Community High School
and will work to assist in any way I
can.
Open House September 10
Visit each of your child’s classes at the Open House on
September 10, 2008 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. While
you’re at ZCHS stop by the PTO tables for a bottle of
water and a cookie during your breaks between classes.
Tables will be conveniently located in both the Freshman
Center and the main building.
This year ZCHS will be undertaking a schedule change that will allow
student to attend a "seminar period". Almost 450 freshmen
will be attend 12 of the 18 seminar periods with upper class Mentors.
This program, previously called "EKOM", has become our
Freshman Mentorship Program.
Over 70 upper class Mentors
met on August 11 th
to be trained in the 7
Habits of Highly Effective
Teens. Presenters
from Dow (Bettye Ellison,
Bill Campbell, and Larry
Sernyk) each volunteered
their time to educate our
Mentors in the 7 Habits.
Along with them were
counselors Melissa Ludwa
and Melinda Stephen who will be working with freshmen this year
and have moved their offices to the Freshman Center. Gil Speer,
the director of the
Freshman Mentorship
Program, also presented
and facilitated
the entire
morning.
The young Mentors
are excited about
giving these "tools"
to freshmen, to help
them have a successful
and rewarding
freshmen year.

the front page of the website each day, so be sure to look for your student
in one of the pictures! We love to recognize student achievement
and try to make sure to post it on the website and in some cases send
it to the local media. If you have a picture or information you would like
For the 2008-2009 academic year, the
structure of and services provided by
the Guidance Department at Zionsville
Community High School (ZCHS) has
been changed. Due to continued
growth at ZCHS and the arrival of freshmen
from two middle schools, starting
in 2009-2010, the administration and
the guidance staff have begun to reassess
how we can best serve the unique
transitional and developmental needs
of our freshmen. Knowing that the first
year of high school sets the tone for a
student’s high school career, we want
to target our youngest students and
their parents in ways that will allow
them to establish a firm foundation to
build upon during their sophomore,
junior, and senior years. With this in
mind, the roles and responsibilities of
our guidance staff have changed to
allow for two guidance counselors dedicated
to serving freshman and sophomore
students (now located on the
Freshman Center campus) and three
counselors dedicated to serving junior
and senior students (in the current
Guidance Office).
Students are now assigned to counselors in the following way:
Mrs. Cassie Petrocelli
Freshmen and Sophomores with last names starting with A-L
Mrs. Melinda Stephan
Freshmen and Sophomores with last names starting with M-Z
Mrs. Melissa Ludwa
Juniors and Seniors with last names starting with A-K
Mr. Robert Brennan
Juniors and Seniors with last names starting with L-T
Mr. Greg Kirkham
Juniors and Seniors with last names starting with U-Z
While we acknowledge that these
changes will mean that your student’s
counselor may change next year and
will change during their high school
career, we also know that the change
will allow students to build relationships
with multiple adults throughout
the building and increase the accessibility
of our counseling staff by allowing
them to focus on the developmental
needs of students in their assigned
grade levels. Likewise, we
anticipate the development of new
programming and services aimed at
easing the high school transition and
ultimately improving the entire high
school experience for all Zionsville
students. As a staff we are working
to make this transition as seamless as
possible by identifying and developing
the most effective and efficient
policies, processes, and patterns of
communication. We hope that you
will help us to maximize the benefits
of our services by contributing to our
ongoing dialogue about how best to
serve the needs of students.
Zionsville Community High School

Q: My child has to walk the whole length of the school during one passing
period, and worries that she will get in trouble for always being late to the
next class. What can we do?
A: After the first few days of school, most students are able to get to class
on time. Six minutes is allowed between classes. If your student still is arriving
late to the next class, she should report it to Mr. Hall, the Freshman Center
Administrator. Mr. Hall is very willing to walk the halls and work with
your student if necessary.
Q: What happens at the Open House? What if I have two students at school
and only one parent can attend?
A: Open House on Wednesday, September 10 th at 5:30 pm is intended primarily
for the parents. The students usually do not attend. The parents walk
the student’s schedule and listen to brief presentations from each teacher.
You may find it helpful to look at your student’s schedule ahead of time, and
have your student show you where the classes are on a school map. Wear
comfortable shoes! If you have to cover two students at once, you might
choose to attend the classes for one child, and then refer to the websites for
the teachers you missed, where class information and rules often can be
found.
Q: Do I have to come in to sign out my child for a doctor’s appointment?
Who calls the student out of class at the right time?
A: If you have called the appointment into the attendance line ahead of time
you do not have to come into school. Your student can sign out from either
the freshman center or the main office. However, your student is in charge
of remembering when to leave class.
Q: My student never hears the announcements, so we never know what is
going on…
A: It is a very helpful habit to read the high school daily announcements on
the school website at http://www.zcs.k12.in.us/zchs/announcements.htm.
Announcements are also posted outside the main office, the Freshman Center
office, and both cafeterias each day.
Q: Do they really order class rings as a freshman?
A: Most people who buy a school ring order them during freshman year.
This allows the student to enjoy wearing the ring all throughout high school.
ZCHS Q & A (continued)
Q: Is it true that the students come home early on exam days?
A: Yes; unless the parent specifies that the student should stay at school
until the normal release time, the student is allowed to leave school when
final exams are completed on the second and third day of exams each semester.
Mark your calendar so you remember that your child will be home
early those days.
Q: How do I find out what clubs there are for my child to join?
A: Some club information can be found on the school website and in the
student handbook, but most club call-outs and meeting times are found on
the daily announcements. Your student should listen to hear about a club
that may interest her.
Q: How does my child find out about homework missed while he was absent?
A: There is no “homework hotline,” but some teachers do post homework
on their individual websites. (There is a link to teacher websites on the
school website.) It is the student’s responsibility to find out about what
make-up work is needed. The student can e-mail the teacher or check when
he returns to school. One idea is to set up a teacher group in your e-mail box
at the beginning of the year, so you can communicate with all the teachers
in case of a planned absence or other questions.
Q: The parking lot is so hectic!
A: The best way to avoid the traffic congestion is to have your student ride
the bus as often as possible. If you must drive to school, the best place to
drop your student off in the morning and pick her up after school is the senior
entrance, by the 400 hall, on the south side of the school. Access to the
north side of the school is reserved for the buses, and it can be hard for you
to exit the parking lot if you drop off your child at the walkway entrance in
the junior parking lot. The best idea when picking up after school is to
schedule the pickup for about 3 pm, when the buses and traffic have left. If
you have to sign your student out a little early for an after-school doctor’s
appointment, arrange the pickup for 15 minutes before dismissal, or you will
be delayed by the traffic.
Q: How do I get a message to my student during the school day?
A: Do not call your student’s cell phone unless you are CERTAIN that it is
turned off. The phone will be taken away if it rings, and it is frustrating for
the student when her own parent gets her in trouble! You can call the cell
phone after 7 th period, when school has let out, and catch the student before
she leaves school. Most students turn their phones on after 7 th period. Or call
the office by 8:15 am or 1pm; before announcements, and the office will let
the student know that they have a message waiting.

College Preparations
There are two upcoming College Fairs. The first is offered by
CTCL (Colleges That Changes Lives), a coalition of 40 colleges that
offer stellar undergraduate education. You can find more about
these schools at www.ctcl.com. Their fair will be held at the Fountains
in Carmel on September 11th. The second is the National
College Fair which will be held downtown at the Convention Center
on November 6th. More information will be provided as we receive
it.
Harry Pettibone is available in the Guidance Office on Thursdays
and Fridays to assist juniors and seniors,
and their parents, with all aspects of the
college planning process. It is not too
early for juniors to start the process and
seniors should be polishing their application
packets and getting ready for the transition to college.
Any questions about college preparation may be referred to Harry
Pettibone at hpettibone@zcs.k12.in.us.
Spots or Shots? Which did your child have?
Due to a change in the Indiana State immunization requirements for the 2008
-2009 school year, documentation of Chicken Pox (varicella) vaccination
or disease is now required for all students at all grade levels.
Parents need to provide the school with documentation of immunization
dates or written documentation stating approximately when (ideally the season
and the year) their child had the Chicken Pox disease.
Do not assume that we already have documentation for your student. We are
asking that every parent provide this information for each of their students
during the first month of school. Since many high school students may have
had the spots rather than the shots and this requirement is new for Indiana this
year, previous immunization records collected by the school may not have
contained information on Varicella or may be incomplete.
Here are ways to meet the requirement:
Email a copy of the immunization record or note to the nurses at
zhsnurse@zcs.k12.in.us, or
Bring your child’s immunization record or note to the clinic during the first
month of school, or
Fax your child’s immunization record or note to 873-8002 attention Nurses.
On behalf of the Zionsville Community School’s Food Service Department,
at this time each year it is my pleasure to extend a hearty
welcome to all!
As you may imagine, the increased prices that consumers find in the grocery
store and gas stations have certainly impacted our program. We did anticipate
this increase last spring and were fortunate that our Board of School Trustees
had the foresight to approve lunch price increases to help us address this issue.
We will continue to monitor our situation closely and look for ways to work
efficiently.
Beginning with the 2008-09 school year secondary level lunches (grades 5-12)
will be $1.95. Additional student lunches and adult lunches will be priced at
$2.75. We believe our lunches are a considerable value and we want you to
know that our focus will continue to be on the quality and nutritional value of
products served.
As mentioned, expenses are a major focus for us this year; however we have
other exciting issues to address. If you should come visit us in the cafeteria after
August 18 th you will observe our new uniforms! Last year we formed a committee
to select a new, professional and easily maintained look. We are excited at
the change and eager to obtain feedback.
September 6, 2008 marks the fifth consecutive year that our Department will
participate in the Fall Festival Parade. We have exciting plans which include
“Bobby Banana”, courtesy of Dole Food Company. We hope to see you during
the parade!
We continue to have a webpage filled with pertinent information such as
menus, nutrition tips, recipes, etc. at www.zcs.k12.in.us/cafe/index.htm. In
addition, our webpage provides notification of position openings if you should
have a desire to explore career possibilities with us!
As in the past, we continue our involvement with the Meal Assistance program.
Each family should have received an Application for Free or Reduced-Price
Meals and Other Benefits. This is a form which after being completed, approved
and implemented can provides valuable assistance for those in need. Instructions
were included with the application, but please note that only one application
is required for the entire family, regardless if siblings are in different ZCS
school locations. If anyone is in need of an Application, please call the Food
Service Office at 873-1232.
Please also note that if you send lunch deposits for more than one of your children,
you can send one check with a notation of the PIN numbers for each
child. This might save you both checks and time! Your children can even be in
different schools and you can still write one check! Please contact your school
Cafeteria for any questions. Contact names and emails are also available
through our webpage at www.zcs.k12.in.us/cafe/index.htm.
Our department continues to value the support of our students, parents, faculty
and administration. We thank each one of you and hope that everyone has a
fabulous start to a positively remarkable school year!
-Jan Swander, Food Service Director & the entire ZCS Cafeteria Staff

Zionsville is a great place to raise a family. Our community is committed to
encouraging healthy living and providing resources for positive learning experiences.
“It takes a village to raise a child,” and the Community Conversation
Group offers these core principals to promote this concept.

We cannot overstate how important it is to discuss the process of making
safe and healthy decisions with your children. Your child may not enjoy
these conversations, but they are critical in establishing your expectations
up front. We all want our children to be safe!
We encourage you to get to know your
child’s friends and their parents. It is not
offensive to call the home where your
son or daughter is visiting or staying
overnight. We hope that this will be
expected and welcomed by all! We have
found that many of our children’s poor
decisions have been the result of miscommunication.
Please call or visit to
ensure that your child is in a safe environment.
Please do not be offended when others call or visit you. We all
want our children to be safe!
Good kids make bad decisions when given the opportunity; this is part of
the growing-up process. It is our responsibility as adults to limit the opportunities
for bad decisions as much as possible. Stay in communication
with your child. Know whom they are with,
where they are, and where they are going next.
Limit access to unhealthy or unsafe items in
your home. Do not assume that they will make
the right decision on their own. We all want our
children to be safe!
Support our local law enforcement. They
are working hard to protect all of us from the harmful effects of poor decisions.
Please support them and the laws they are hired to enforce. Consider
using them as a positive resource in your efforts to encourage good
decisions by your children. We all want our children to be safe!
We encourage you to take some time and use this vision statement as a starting
point for a conversation with your children. We believe this level of communication
will help our children be safe!

Thank you to all who have joined the PTO, donated funds, and/or volunteered
your time and talents! ZCHS is a much better place because of you! Parent
involvement makes better students!!
If you haven’t joined the PTO yet this year, please take a moment to visit the
ZCHS PTO web page to learn more about PTO and access the membership
The Science Department of ZCHS is
pleased to welcome Mr. Lee Banitt
as our new Integrated Chemistry/
Physics teacher. Mr. Banitt comes to us from Tipton High School and
previous to that he was an organic chemist at Eli Lilly. He
is married to a science teacher at Fishers High School and
has two children. We feel fortunate that we were able to
get someone with such a strong chemistry background as
an addition to our staff.
We would also like to announce that Mr. Cripe is now a
father!! Emerson Cripe was born on the 4th of July. He has
lots of pictures and stories to tell about his new little girl.
The ZCHS Art Department would like
to welcome two new staff members
to our team. Mrs. Jalaie’s maternity
substitute teacher, Grace Fletcher,
has joined us full-time. She will be
taking on the Introduction to 3D classes, Sculpture, Ceramics II and a bit of
Introduction to 2D. Ms. Fletcher enjoyed her experiences with our students
immensely last semester, and is thrilled to be staying on with us. Ready to
jump right in, Ms. Fletcher has taken on the duty of sponsoring Art Club and
coaching the Fine Arts Academic Superbowl team this
year. Any interested students should contact her in the
main building.
As Mrs. Jared is still out on her maternity leave, Lacey
Banuelos will be covering for her first semester. Mrs.
Banuelos is a graduate of Herron with a focus on photography
and computer graphics; students will be in
good hands while Mrs. Jared is gone.
Mrs. Julie Noel, a Special Education
Teacher at ZCHS was a
2008 grant winner thanks to
the Zionsville Education Foundation
and the Community Foundation of Boone County. She was awarded a
$600 grant for the Project, "Listen, Look and Learn". This project supports
the English curriculum by giving students another learning option
based on their individual strengths and needs. The grant funds will aid in
purchasing audio books and DVD's for students to use in the classroom and
take home overnight. Mrs. Noel is extremely grateful for this recognition,
the support and the opportunity to provide students with the necessary
resources for success.

Attention all Sophomore Honors English
parents, Mrs. Bender is looking for parent
volunteers for the annual Canterbury Tales
Pilgrimage on Friday, September 12. We
need parents for the day (about 9-2:15), and
parents to help set up lunch at Eagle Creek
Park. It is a fun way to get involved and to
see your kids dressed in clothing from the
Middle Ages! If you are interested, please contact Mrs.
Bender at ext. 12312 or abender@zcs.k12.in.us.
With new uniforms, a great competition show design, and the
largest group of performers in their history, the Marching Eagles
are looking forward to a great year. The students are more excited
than usual about it this year, in part because of the show
theme. The title of the 2008 show is: “Dreams and Dead Ends, A
Gangster Tale”. The show opens with the gangster (the color
guard) breaking out of prison while they play a cool song called Jazz Police.
Next, the gangster finds his girl; the music here is Harlem Nocturne. Being a
1920’s era gangster, some gambling follows and the band plays Luck Be A Lady
Tonight. Just then, the police catch the gangster, there is a chase scene including
sirens, and finally the gangster ends up back in jail.
One of the most exciting parts of the summer was hosting an Open Class Drum
and Bugle Corps called Jersey Surf. The competition site for quarter finals,
semi finals, and finals was in Bloomington, but the group rehearsed in Zionsville
and slept in the Freshman Center gym for three nights. Jersey Surf, along
with the Marching Eagles, gave a short performance in our stadium which was
followed by an ice cream social for the two bands. Performers and staff from
Jersey Surf were very grateful for our hospitality and are looking forward to
staying in Zionsville again next August.
Another upcoming highlight is the opportunity to perform in Lucas Oil Stadium.
I have a feeling that there will be well over 1000 Zionsville spectators for that
event on August 23 rd . This will be the premiere of the
Marching Eagles in their new uniforms.
Enjoy the shows,
Mr. Landrum, Director of Bands
meeting). At a typical FMC meeting simple songs are
projected on a screen while students play a variety of instruments
and percussion. It is not required or necessary that a student know
how to play an instrument. Singers are always needed! Call out
meeting will be Wednesday, August 27, from 2:45 - 3:15 pm, in
Room 411 at the high school. No instruments needed for this first
On Tuesday, August 26 th at 3pm the Zionsville Community High
School Robotics Cub, AKA the Steel Eagles, will host its first meeting of the
school year. Last year the club sent two teams of 18 total students to the Indiana
Regional VEX Bridge Battle Competition. They took 1 st and 6 th places,
qualifying them for the World Championships in Los Angeles. At World’s
they placed 14 th and 34 th out of 91 teams from around the globe including
China, Korea, England, Brazil, and Singapore and won the Good Sportsmanship
award (voted upon by all competing teams.
The competition schedule for this year has been expanded to include
the Midwest Regional in Omaha, Nebraska, the National Championship, also
in Omaha, and the World Championship, tentatively scheduled to be held at
Disneyworld in Orlando, Florida.
With the expanded competition schedule the club will be fundraising
through various activities, including hosting a competition at ZCHS
and accepting donations. Donations are tax deductible.
So far this year 8 teams, composed of a total of 47 students have
signed up. New additions to the club will be accepted through Friday, August
30 th . To start a team, no more than 6 students must turn in a $600 registration
fee to Mr. Wandland in the Freshman Center, room E213. This will allow the
club to purchase two VEX robot kits for their team, and register them for the
competitions. The Steel Eagles have made a huge impact on the Robotics
Community, and this year should be an exciting one.
Jed Wandland
ZCHS Robotics Club Sponsor
ZCHS students who may be interested in participating in one of
the academic competition teams are encouraged to make
contact with one of the league coordinators ASAP. There are
three types of competitions:
1. Hoosier Spell Bowl in the fall (wanted: people who like to
spell, but on a team (10 members) and in a different format
from the traditional spelling bee),
2. White River League Quiz Bowl/WTHR Brain Game which
begins in October and runs throughout the academic year
(general knowledge questions in rapidfire
formats, teams of 4 or five members),
3. Hoosier Academic Super Bowl in the second
semester (Five teams in disciplinary
areas of math, science, social studies,
English, and fine arts—five member
teams who study their subject with focus
on a particular historical period).
Zionsville has been quite successful in these competitions, including
conference and area championships, state finalists and
champions in Spell Bowl and Super Bowl, and being ranked high
enough in quiz bowl to qualify for state and national tournaments.
