COMMODORE’S REPORT
Dominic Papaluca reports:
Hello Members,
Just a short note this month…as we are busy preparing for the Half-Yearly meeng of Members in March.
Management, Administraon and Governance
Doug is seling in nicely. I’m sure most of you have seen him around the club by now. He is learning
more and more each day…exactly how much goes on at our lile club!
Finance
We are squirrelling as much money away as we can at the moment. We actually hit $1M in the bank
during January…of course this is due to the way we bill every 6 months. However, it is great to see. We
can thank some good management along the way, and it all started with John Allpike making everything
more cost-effecve. External Funcons have been completely turned around since Jennifer has been
here. Also, Internal Funcons are closer to break-even now. So we are meeng our budgets in virtually
all respects. We have some big projects coming up…and we are trying to prepare ourselves as much as
possible for them.
Capital Works Program
As menoned last month, some of the smaller projects will be commenced in the next few months,
namely: the ladies toilets upstairs; the downstairs toilets/change rooms etc. A-West refurbishment will
probably cost more than we think…so we are looking at that right now…and trying to save up as much as
we can for it. We have heard back from the Swan River Trust regarding our H Jey submission, and are
working through their requirements at the moment. We will let you know once final approval is
received…it will take some me yet.

VICE COMMODORE’S VICE COLUMN
PETER MAYHEW reports:
Welcome to the second edion of the Vice Column! We have made it to the second month, no complaints
and we are in print again!
Walking around the jey system the other week, I was asked by a member what does the Vice Commodore
do at CYC. Many of you would know but for those of you that are unaware, I prey much follow the
Commodore and act as a deputy if he cannot aend a funcon. Recently I have been involved with recently
planning where we are going in the next few years, reviewing our performance from our past plan
and member parcipaon.
Looking at past member surveys we have similar issues today; an aging membership, limited parking, limited
member events and facilies. The commiees and our general manager are hatching a plan, which
will hopefully increase our membership and offer a greater range and ulmately beer facilies for everybody
at CYC.
Well, no winners last month, and the item photographed close up was Chas Milner’s old Cray pot!
The photo was taken close up to the plasc slats on the top from a low camera angle!
Now you are all in the spirit of the compeon and have an idea of how to play, its me for the second
quiz item. As before, there is a bole of wine, available for collecon over the bar (red or white) for the
1 st correct answer received for correctly guessing this month’s item.

THE VICE COMMODORE’S VICES
This is a close up picture of what item you might use on your boat?
Send your answers by email to Cass: recepon@claremontyachtclub.org.au …… and we will publish the
answer and winner next month (lets hope we get one this me!).
So unl next month enjoy your club and I look forward to meeng you all over the next few weeks.
A police officer pulls over a driver and informs him that he has just won $5,000 in a safety compeon,
all because he is wearing his seat belt.
"What are you going to do with the prize money?" the officer asks
The man responds, "I guess I'll go to driving school and get my license."
His wife says, "Officer, don't listen to him. He's a smart aleck when he's
drunk."
End of the joke Cass….. Hehehe!

FUNCTIONS CORNER
JENNIFER TROLLIP reports:
Hi everyone,
We would like to say a big thank you to all the members whom have been supporng the club and
booking in for funcons or for the restaurant. It is great to know that you support us, and we will strive to
provide you with an unforgeable evening or an excing new event whenever possible. We are
connuously improving our service to you as our members; so any feedback or ideas would be much
appreciated. It is somemes hard in a diverse club to understand exactly what members are enthusiasc
about and what path to take when creang a special Club Event that everyone will love and aend.
I am now in my second year and since I am geng to know a few of you I am looking forward to more of
your personal feedback while we plan a few new events as well as our regular Wednesday and Friday
nights.
I am always available on Wednesday & Friday dining nights so please introduce your self if I have had not
had the pleasure to meet you yet.
Wonderful Birthday Celebration
Hi Jennifer, I just wanted to pass on my "thankyou" for a wonderful job you (and your staff) did for my 50th Birthday celebration.
The room was set-up lovely. So many people commented on it.
The food was fantastic, tasty and there was more than enough to go around. Please pass on my gratitude to the Chef.
My children and nieces and nephews loved the burgers and chips - my son is still talking about the size of the plate the chips came out
on. My father and many many others have mentioned that the platters of food were the best they've had at a function! Well done.
And your staff / bar staff were so friendly and helpful. It made my night extremely enjoyable for me, my family and friends.
I really appreciate you patience, assistance and huge effort in making my day very special.
Exceptional Food
Hi Jennifer, I brought two friends to dinner last Wednesday and they thought the food was exceptional. So did I. Would you please
pass our complements to the chef(s) and the staff. I am glad to be a social member.
Beautiful Room, Fantastic Staff
I was a bridesmaid at a wedding at your venue on Saturday night. I wanted to comment on how beautiful the room looked and also how
fantastic your staff was. They were helpful, friendly, and just really happy to help where ever they could. This ensured the night ran
smoothly! Thank you so much and I think they should all be congratulated! Thank you Emma Hedley
A beautiful morning at the Yacht Club
Thank you for a beautiful morning at the Yacht Club on Wednesday.
Colin - the food was sensational and went down a real treat
Jennifer - the whole breakfast ran very smoothly as did the planning and lead up to the breakfast. It was a great credit to you. Thank
you all once again.

By Peter Tate
General Commiee Member
Any divers wanng a fun day out are invited to come down to the club to assist in removing as much rubbish
from within our pen system as possible.
The rubbish mainly consists of discarded and breakaway mooring lines and weights, plasc bags, buckets
and boles.
I would think the job could be completed in a couple of hours, diving in pairs. Heavy items will be
aached to ropes and floats to be removed from above and loose items bagged up and placed in the skip.
There will be a free sausage sizzle aerwards and a free tank refill voucher for the parcipant divers.
Not all parcipants need to be SCUBA divers, we need help operang the pontoon removing heavy objects
and much of the club can be accessed with a mask and snorkel. The deepest part of the marina is
about 10m deep and there is good visibility throughout providing we start early and pick the right me of
day.
What you will need to bring will be your own dive kit if diving and all involved will need a sturdy pair of
gloves. If you have an underwater camera, bring that also so we can share the experience with the rest of
the club via the Midstream.
This will be a fun morning and you will be surprised by the variety of sea life we have around the club. On
a recent dive I spoed sea horses, scallops and one huge flat head to menon just a few. Who knows, you
might even meet like minded people to dive with in the future. At this point we are planning to have the
clean up on Sunday 24 th of February.
Please contact the club if you are able to help.
Smokers
I’m sure by now you all know that a cigaree bu flicked into the water takes several years to break down
and is highly toxic to marine life. Next me you are having a stroll along the river foreshore take a look at
how many bus are on the ground.
I understand that if you have guests or crew that smoke it is somemes hard to ask them not to flick their
bus over the side. If however you provide a smokeless ashtray on board you will find most smokers will
be able to use it. As a consideraon to the environment, please fit an ashtray to your boat as soon as possible.
Editor’s note: The General Commiee fully supports Peter’s recommendaon, nong that to lier the river
violates the clubs deepest custodial concern for the environment. They reserve the right to take strong
acon against anyone doing so. Concerned members should report instances to the General Manager
who will respect your confidenality.

A WORD FROM THE MANAGER
DOUG HANNAFORD reports:
PARKING
As you are all aware parking is at a premium at the club. I would like to assure you that several of us are
giving high priority to easing that situaon. In the past weeks for example, there have been a couple of
occasions where dinghy members have not been able to release their dinghies from the dinghy shed. This
week our wonderful “Old Salts” volunteers, ably assisted by Bosun Rob have erected a boundary rope to
allow space for the gates to open and the dinghy ramps to be extended and used. This fence and its
sleeved posts can be removed by the management and commiees, however it is preferred members do
not undertake this themselves.
Please note we sll expect to get two rows of cars onto the lawn when it is used as overflow parking.
Members can also assist in the following ways:
• If you are going away for several days or more, please consider geng a li so you do not need to
hold up a bay for that enre me.
• Try to bring more crew, passengers or dinner guests down in the same car
• I would be very interested to hear any further suggesons from you. Remember we enjoy warm
cooperaon with Bethesda and Christchurch when it comes to these ideas - we are already
exploring other opons.
STAFF TRAINING
Last week our key hospitality staff returned from
holiday break to a solid aernoon of renewed
orientaon training. “Benefits of Membership”
was a key focus and I am sure recent visitors to
the clubhouse will have enjoyed more
personalised aenon – I have certainly
received a lot of compliments on it. Please
remember my door is always open for good
ideas or construcve cricism.

DEEPDENE
One of the club’s best kept secrets is the free espresso coffee (make it yourself) for Members every day in
Deepdene. On that note, I would appreciate you bringing in your used magazines or books to help build
up an interesng library to complement the comfortable leather lounges.
HOODOO GURUS
WIN A PRIZE!!!
Looking for an electric getaway? The
Ronest Hotel management has visited
recently to make us aware of a special
performance by the Hoodoo Gurus on
March 3 for anyone keen to visit the island.
They were kind enough to donate two
pairs of ckets for the first two members
to tell me the name of the lead
singer.
Call the Office with your answer to win
the ckets!
SUPPORT OUR MARINE ENVIRONMENT
Please look on Page 18 of this issue for details of the special ECOCEAN dinner event on March 9 in support
of research into the magnificent but threatened
Whale Shark and Manta Rays. Next week
Gulliver their 9m inflatable whale shark will be
in the Ball Room to show case this event along
with various art pieces which will be available by
aucon on the night. It would be great to see a
strong CYC conngent at this memorable event. Past events have been at Frasers restaurant and Royal
Perth Yacht Club.
WALA VOLUNTEERS
Lastly, just a quick note to say the WA Laser State Titles will be held at CYC on the March Long Weekend,
which will be a very excing and busy day. We will endeavour to make this a smooth and wonderful event
and I ask that you please be paent and assist us where you can. We are sll looking for any willing volunteers to
help with a multude of acvies and jobs over that weekend. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Claremont Yacht Club would like to say a big welcome to our new Members of the club for January !
We hope you enjoy our facilies and relaxed atmosphere.
AYF SILVER CARDS
Members will be processed on database for a silver card but will not receive an actual card this
round as they have already been sent out by Yachng Australia. They will have a member
number which I can look up if anyone ever enquires about it. All the members added to the
lisng will receive cards as of the next renewal in August – September 2013

MORE ABOUT WHALE SHARKS - THE BIGGEST FISH IN THE SEA!
They are the world’s largest fish, one of the most unique and one that has graced our oceans for millions
of years. Yet they are threatened. We don’t know how many whale sharks there are in the open ocean,
but we do know human acvies can and are having a negave impact on their numbers.
The whale shark is hunted for its fins in several countries including China, and then exported primarily to
the East Asian market for shark fin soup. They are also hunted locally in certain countries - but at an unsustainable
rate. Furthermore, whale sharks oen get tangled in fishing nets or hit by boats at locaons
all over the world.
The Internaonal Union for the Conservaon of Nature (IUCN) has placed the whale shark on the Red List
of Threatened Species. In Australia, they are listed as ‘vulnerable to exncon’ under the Federal Government’s
Environment Protecon and Biodiversity Conservaon (EPBC) Act.
‘ECOCEAN’
A large part of ECOCEAN’S focus has been on the whale shark populaon found off the Ningaloo coast in
north-west Western Australia. While studying this populaon in the 1990s, ECOCEAN was able to establish
that photo-idenficaon of individual spot paerns on the skin of each shark could be used to monitor
this species (much like fingerprints). A database, the ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-idenficaon Library,
was created to store photos and enable scienfic analysis of whale sharks seen off Ningaloo. It now
holds informaon on more than 850 individual whale sharks from Ningaloo.
The ECOCEAN Library has grown dramacally in size since its incepon and is now used by ‘cizen scien-
sts’ all over the world to monitor whale sharks. It currently houses more than 40,000 photos from over
50 different countries, the largest global database of its kind.
In addion to the photo-idenficaon program, ECOCEAN has been using a variety of techniques to collect
data on whale shark movement and behavior since 1996. There are four different systems that have
been employed; i) Satellite tags, ii) Acousc tags, iii) Daily Diary data loggers, and iv) ‘Criercams’ (onanimal
video cameras).
Despite being the largest fish in the sea and loved by so many in the community, important quesons
about the whale shark’s biology and distribuon remain unanswered.
These include:
How many whale sharks visit the Ningaloo Coast every year?
Where does this populaon of whale sharks migrate?
How fast do whale sharks grow?
Where and how oen do whale sharks breed?
Where are the crical feeding habitats for whale sharks?
How long do whale sharks live for?
How does tourism impact on whale shark in the long-term?
Are there other industries that impact on whale sharks?
Does whale shark hunng in other countries impact on the populaon found at Ningaloo?
Where else are whale sharks found in Australia?

POWER SECTION
Peter Wilkinson reports:
This is an insight to the possible future of Time Trailing in WA.
While Bill McLeod was holidaying in Morton Bay Queensland in late 2012 he noced a large number of power
boats with numbers aached to the front of their vessels, it looked as if they were compeng in some form of me
trailing however he didn’t noce any check point boats on the course. Bill informed me of what he had seen so I
contacted both the Royal Queensland Yacht Club and Southport Yacht Club to find out if what Bill had seen was in
fact a Power Time trial. Bill was correct it was a navigaon event similar to our me trailing using GPS tracking and
Timing where the competors nominate there boat speed and have a given start me. They travel over a set
course and each mark is med to the second ( no check pointers needed), you only require a start boat to monitor
the start and a boat to collect the transponders at the end of the event. The data is then uploaded to Tack Tracker
and results are produced instantly. I have since spoken to PCYC commiee members and will be taking the
informaon to our next commiee meeng in February; hopeful this will be the future for me trailing in WA.
A complete tracking solution for everyone
Our goal at Tack tracker is to make tracking easy and accessible for everyone. We have the soluon for you
whether you’re an individual sailor who wants to use a tracker to improve his/her sailing, a coach who wants a new
de-brief tool or a club running regaas and now for Power Boaters. A navigaon Rally (Time Trailing) is a test of
charng and boat handling skills as well as being great fun for all competors. Now with TACKTRACKER , running a
Nav Rally (me Trial) is no longer a volunteer
intensive operaon and everyone can join in and
parcipate. At many places Tack tracker has helped
the club reinvigorate the sport, geng more
members compeng.
Nav Rally Setup
To run Navigaon rally (me trial) with Tack
Tracker:
1 Create your rally event ahead of me in Tack
tracker, specifying the course as starng locaon
followed by a series of bearings and distance to
travel.
2 Add “gates” or individual check points .Boats
receive penales for each second they are early or
late through a gate. You can add as many or few
gates (checkpoints) as you wish.
3 Complete the schedule, lisng each competor,
their nominated speed and start me.
The course setup dialog looks like this -->

The schedule dialog looks like this:
With the rally definion in place you can publish the course to your competors

Nav Rally Operation
On the day of the event, each competor is provided with a QStarz GPS logger configured for 1 second
tracking interval, and competes as normal. At the conclusion of the rally, competors return their loggers
to the organizers, who upload the track into Tack Tracker. On uploading, Tack Tracker automacally
computes the competors score awarding penalty points for each second early or late through each gate
(check point)
At the post-rally funcon there is no longer a long wait for results and a replay can be shown on the big
screen for entertainment. Aerwards the rally may be published to the Tack tracker Cloud for
competors and friends to review online.
As well as this, you can generate a report of the rally results for prinng. The report can also be copied and
pasted into Excel:
Notes
Tack Tracker computes all mes to millisecond resoluon and gate mes are interpolated between logged
points for accurate scoring. Penalty points are awarded for each full second early or late - fraconal seconds
do not contribute to the score. Tack tracker also allows you to configure the fixed penales awarded for
missing the start or missing a gate and even change of speed.

I HEARD IT BLOWIN IN THE WIND
“From the Start Box”-Saturday 12 th January 2013
A ‘warmish day’ with 10 knot South-Easterly winds greeted the 12 yachts that raggedup
for sailing. Warlord & Avaganda were joined by the Naturaliste 27 Adriaca and a
new member Greg Simpson aboard Randall 32 yacht Altercaon.
The three regular SS22s, Beaujolais, Andalusia & Krista contested their race without
their Red Witch counterparts as Shee Rua and Midnight Express fell foul of the
‘easterly’ and struggled to sail out of their pens in me. Kingsley Porter and Dirk
Adams matched-up in Div 3 & 4 with Annie Lee II enjoying the incoming sea-breeze to
finish first. Peter Robbie was a full 8 minutes ahead of Avaganda, but a good sail by
Adriaca saw them take out the Handicap Result in Div 1 & 2. Altercaon was a lile
tardy at the start but will get used to our lile part of the world.
“From the Start Box”-Saturday 19 th January 2013
A leisurely 5knot SE wind slowly turned Southerly then became
the Freo Doctor we know and love. So aer co-opng the
Commodore to place the Burnside boys and great start was had
by all (except the Commodore). He was 4 minutes behind the
Div 1 & 2 fleet start. He was not able to catch Warlord but was
only minutes behind at the finish. In the SS22s, Insaable led
from start to finish with Andalusia & Krista taking the minor
placings. Panache and Tehani tussled for the Div 3 & 4 honours.
And the Commodore had given the Red Witch Fleet a verbal
prodding with Dale II coming up trumps.
Dinghies 20 th January 2013
A warm and sunny morning aracted 19 Lasers overall ( 8 full
rigs, 9 radials and 2 x 4.7’s ) racing in light to moderate winds.
Ross introduced his elder daughter, Emma, to the club, sailing a
Laser 4.7 for the first me that day and admirably staying upright
throughout the race ( although a few short cuts were taken
).
With light winds there was a very closely packed start but the
fleet quickly split between those taking an early port tack and
those connuing on the starboard tack of the start. The course
coordinators did well to reset the marks for the second lap following
a 90 degree wind shi that occurred soon aer the start.
The race separated into the usual sub group bales with Mal
and Nigel out front followed by a close contest between Travis,
John Fussell, Sco and Steve. The next group included new
member Evan Schmedje, John van der Peyl, Andrew, Will and
John Rasmussen. People I could pace myself against were led by
Lloyd then Ross, Gaye, Rob, Wendy, Wal and Carlos. Wal was
doing well unl he stalled in a tack and then capsized, one of
the hazards of full rig for beginners.
Mal was fastest full rig and Sco fastest radial. On handicap
Lloyd came third, Rob was second and Carlos had his first win.
Unfortunately Carlos could not be there to receive his pennant
so I have the envious posion of wring the report. Thanks
again to the volunteers for making the race possible and to Viv
for bringing a cake to celebrate birthdays for Nigel and Travis
and her wedding anniversary with Mal. Congratulaons to all
for a great day sailing.
“Offshore with the ComDom”-Saturday 12 th January 2013
Bunbury and Return Ocean Race
This is a very challenging race because you have to make a decision
to either “stay close to shore chasing an Easterly breeze” or “head
out west chasing a sea breeze”. The reason this is so important, is
that you get “locked in” by the Bouvard Reef…which stretches
down the coast from Mandurah down to Bunbury. So, once you’ve
made your bed, you have to lie in it!!! Aer looking at various forecasts,
talking to previous winners of the race, reading tea-leaves,
tossing a coin and even consulng a “medicine man”, Wild Bull
decided to “stay in” because the chances of easterly breezes were
greater than southerly breezes. Turns out they were right. What
they didn’t bank on, was the strength of the southerly when it
came…and how long it came in for. The big boats went west and
made huge ground…and used their waterline length to advantage.
Wild Bull didn’t disgrace itself…but once the big boats got in front…
it was “game over” for the lile boats. Wild Bull is sll the smallest
boat out there in the bluewater series…so they are showing that
the boys from CYC have guts if nothing else! ☺ End result was 8 th
over the line (out of 13 boats), 9 th on IRC, 4 th on YAH. Nothing under
38 foot beat them home…so they are sll punching above their
weight. GO WILD BULL!!! CommDom is now recovering from
26hrs:40mins of non-stop racing – with about one hour of sleep
during that me. The winning boat was a 48 down-wind flyer
(Walk on the Wild Side) who did it in 20hrs:41mins – so the boys
weren’t THAT far behind really!!!

SAIL REPORT
Dean Caple reports:
Sailing at CYC has really gathered some momentum
in the past month, with the commencement of the
adult Start Sailing 1 courses and a working club web
site. We have been experiencing a flow on new crew
into our sailing which has been a great help to those
boats who have been struggling for crew each week.
The Sailing Commiee has recently developed the 5
Year Sailing Plan which has idenfied some key areas
to address for the future of sailing. These are:
⇒ Development of instructors in 2013 to
supplement current dinghy courses and to
introduce the keel boat program into the club
in 2014
⇒
⇒
⇒
CYC will introduce the Tackers junior sailing
program into the club to cater for junior sailing
and grow this area of the club which in the past
has been difficult to sustain. For more
informaon on Tackers please visit the
Yachng Western Australia web site and click
on the heading: Tackers Program
Introducing alternave sailing opons for
members apart from the tradional Saturday
racing, research from Yachng Australia has
indicated that there are many other sailing
acvies that people are interested in or have
the me to parcipate in, more informaon
can be found in the GEMBA report
commissioned by Yachng Australia - search
“Gemba Report” on the Yachng WA website.
CYC is also an accredited Discover Sailing Club
which allows us not only to conduct accredited
Yachng Australia courses , but other acvies
such as Discover Sailing Days, exposure on the
Discover Sailing Web site and other
promoonal resources at minimal or no cost.
For more informaon on Discover Sailing have
a look at the website:
hp://www.discoversailing.org.au/
So as you can see there has been a lot of work going
on behind the scenes to grow the level of
parcipaon at CYC, although these steps will not be
an overnight fix, but we are confident that there will
be some posive changes in the future.
I would like to thank Greg Simpson for his offer to
take on the role of the CYC Yachng WA rep , with the
passing of Maurice Field this posion has been vacant
and is an important role for the club to be
represented at the YWA meeng. We would also like
to thank Bob Brereton for his generous offer to
sponsor the CYC 420 training boats we use for the
adult sailing courses. If anyone is interested in
sponsoring a soon to be purchased Tackers program
boat please let me know as there is a reasonable
sponsorship package available.
On the racing front COMMDOM and John Rayner have
been hard at it racing their boats off shore, it takes a
lot of effort just to get to the start line for an ocean
race let alone finish it, so thank you to all those
people who have crewed and helped move boats to
and from Fremantle. It is also worth nong that
Gerogie in the SS27s and a number of the SS22s have
been acve in their associaons and have come back
with some impressive results.
On the March long weekend (2,3 & 4) CYC will be
hosng the WA Laser Associaon State Titles. This is a
great opportunity for the club to host a big event,
unfortunately there will be some minor interrupon
to areas such as parking and a lot more acvity, but
please be paent and assist us where you can, we are
sll looking for an army of willing helpers to assist
with on shore and some on water acvies for that
weekend.
Sunday the 17 th March is our big race; the
Commodores Cup! We will be hosng boats from
other clubs and associaons on this day and it’s a
great day racing. I would ask that if you can’t come
out on the water sailing that day please consider
giving our hard and over-worked start team a hand in
the start box for a few hours, - any me you can spare
in the box or assisng in the rescue boat will be
invaluable on the day.
Finally thanks go to all those people who make sailing
happen at CYC both in the office and as volunteers;
without your help we couldn’t go sailing.

SAIL COURSES

DINGHY REPORT
John Rasmussen reports:
CYC dinghy sailing connues to grow in
popularity. This is reflected in both the number
of boats on the water each Sunday (19 last week)
and the steady stream of new sailors and
potenal sailors. New members are excing for
lots of reasons. The exisng members noce how
in a couple of months they go from capsizing and
struggling to rig the boat correctly to suddenly
picking up handicap pennants and nudging the
back end of the fleet (as I found out myself last
week)! Hopefully the new sailors realise that
with some pracce and advice, sailing is a lot of
fun and not nearly as inmidang as it first looks.
None of this would be possible without the
dedicated band of volunteers we have each
Sunday and support from the different
commiees - many thanks to you all.
With more adult dinghy sailors joining the ranks,
CYC junior dinghy sailing is set to take off later in
the year. The Dinghy, Sail and General
Commiees have given their support for the
Yachng Australia Tackers Programme to start at
CYC. This programme is aimed at introducing
primary school aged children to sailing in a fun
and safe way using Opmist Dinghies. We will be
purchasing 6 new plasc Opmists for the
programme and running courses on a regular
basis in the second half of the year. However, to
make space for these new boats, we must first
get rid of some of the exisng Mirrors (see
below).
minimise their use of the club car park during
this period as we will need all the space we
can get for rigging and launching boats.
Thank you to all who have offered their help over
the weekend. If any doctors or members
qualified in Senior First Aid are able to spare a
few hours to be on stand-by for any medical
emergencies, your skills would be much
appreciated.
Mirrors for Sale
With several new dinghy member and the
Tackers Programme to start later in the year, we
need to make room in the dinghy shed. The club
currently owns 4 Mirror sailing dinghies we are
looking to sell (2 fibreglass and 2 wooden). If you
know of anyone interested, please let me know.
Asking prices range between $200 and $1000
and we are willing to negoate.
Best wishes to all for a fun February on the
water!
THE ARCHIVE CREW
Walker Log
The photo is of a Walker Log. Walker made a number of such logs, this is one from
the 1950s and 1960s but were common on ocean going yachts up until the 1990’s.
The Walker log is a form of Marine Odometer, sometimes called a “Taffrail Log”
The torpedo like rotators were streamed behind the vessel. Movement through the
water created rotation in the line , the rotation drives the rotary input shaft and the
clockwork mechanism recorded the revolutions which were shown on the
calibrated scale in the unit of Miles and Miles/10. It was therefore a “distance
measurement”.
The Walker Log was but a refinement of the Chip Log. The first chip log was a float
thrown overboard and as it flowed alongside the boat. A sand glass was used to record the time take between
two points marked on the ships rail. Later logs involved a water “parachute” of some kind tossed overboard as
a sand glass was turned, the line was drawn out astern as the ship moved and “Knots” or tassels were counted
as they passed the observer. As the sand glass ran out, the line was “caught” by the observer who then
checked how many complete Knots had run out plus the proportion of the incomplete “knot”. In the 1960’s I
used a plastic flower pot as the drogue and a set length of line. I had a pre-computed card which showed my
speed for any “time” taken for the pre-measured length of line to run out. In the cold and foggy Moray Firth
the chip log, compass and a ferrite rod radio were essential to coastal navigation for the impoverished!
The exact distance between knots on the line and the amount of sand in the glass varied somewhat as
refinements were made to the definition of the Nautical Mile. It was finally settled at 47 feet between knots
and the sand glass ran for 28 seconds
The sand glass was still used to measure time because all clocks of the time required pendulums to operate
and Mr Harrison had not yet invented his “movement” and K2.
For those interested try Googling “ Chip log” or go hunt the junk shops of Guildford , one of them has an old
Taffrail log still in its box.
Thanks to the late Bob Denham for saving this specimen. 2012.
