He has been associated with the organisation of the RSC since the mid-1970s, first through the Kent Local Section and latterly by membership of various central boards and committees. Dick says: “Council ought to represent the full range of the membership, covering professional and regional as well as scientific interests. I am prepared to use my experience of RSC affairs to bear upon these issues on behalf of all ordinary members.” Dr Ian Gordon CChem FRSC Ian Gordon is chairman of Switzerland-based food ingredients and fine chemicals consultancy Giract. After reading chemistry at Oxford, he joined Guinness and later Express Dairy. Ian is a member of the Milk Development Council and has served on various RSC boards, including the Education Board and PMB. Ian says: “New directions, including a wider footprint in Europe, reaching out more effectively to aid communication between the professional staff and the members of the RSC, are areas where I believe the inputs from smaller businesses are important and need better articulation.” Dr Helen Hailes CChem MRSC Helen Hailes is a senior lecturer in chemical biology at UCL, having originally studied at Cambridge. She is a committee member of the RSC Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Sector and has served on the Biotechnology Group. Helen says: “During the nine years as a member of staff in the Chemistry Department at UCL, I have gained expertise working in academia together with industry, professional bodies and funding councils... The chemistry academic community is currently going through a period of significant change and I will add value to crucial discussions on the role the RSC can play.” Dr Diana Simpson EurChem CChem FRSC Diana Simpson is currently principal consultant of a small analytical and forensic science practice Analysis for Industry. She was elected to the Council for the Registration of Forensic Practitioners three years ago, previously served on the RSC Council as well as a number of RSC committees, and represents the RSC/AD Council on BSI and HSE committees. AGM 2004 report It proved to be a good year at the RSC for campaigning and publishing SUCCESSES IN CAMPAIGNING and publishing were highlighted by Prof Sir Harry Kroto (pictured right) at this year’s RSC annual general meeting, held at Burlington House on 15 July. In addition, Sir Harry welcomed a number of new members to Council and formally handed his presidential badge of office to the incoming president, Dr Simon Campbell. In his final duty as president, Sir Harry drew attention to the Annual Review 2003 and highlighted a number of recent achievements. The RSC’s campaigning role in support of its strategic goals – to broaden the RSC footprint, extend influence on EU institutions and enhance its image – had led to a number of meetings with senior members of the government, including Gordon Brown, chancellor of the exchequer, and Charles Clarke, secretary of state for education. RSC publishing operations had made a surplus of £5.4 million, a substantial and “I am greatly in favour of continuing professional development and encourage meetings where this may be pursued. I also encourage industrial members to take a more active part in the activities of the RSC.” Prof Ron Thomas CSci CChem FRSC Ron Thomas has extensive experience both in his professional life and serving on many RSC boards, including Council. He has had various industrial, teaching and research appointments, and has won a number of awards and held honour appointments around the world. Ron says: “Election will make available experience of practice, research and teaching linked to various sciences. This – interweaved with industrial liaison, consulting, university governance, publishing and editing, conference organisation, international relations and finances – will provide background to support the RSC’s charter objectives.” welcome increase over the previous year. The reorganisation of the publishing operation had started to pay back, with a renewed emphasis on marketing and accelerated product innovation. The RSC backfile, containing digitised versions of RSC journals from 1841, had been successfully launched. Reduction in journal revenue – following the failure of the subscription agent Rowecom – had been offset by increased sales in China. The honorary treasurer, Dr Barry Price, presented the accounts for 2003 which showed a generally satisfactory year. The General Fund had suffered a deficit of £94,000, while recovery in global equity markets had led to a significant increase in the value of RSC investments; total funds had increased by £5.0 million to £49.4 million. Income from membership subscriptions had risen slightly to £2.5 million, which reflected the increase in subscription rates. The proportion of membership-related activities covered by income from subscriptions had continued to fall, from 37% to 35%. A notice of vacancies on Council and for elected members of boards was published in RSC News in January. In addition to the five new national members of Council (see panel left), the following people took up positions: Graham Henney was elected District Member, North East; Dr Adrian Arnold Smith and Dr David Whan were elected to serve on Professional Affairs and Membership Board and Education and Qualifications Board respectively; and Andrew Thompson and Dr Elizabeth Page were elected to the Education Division Council. London-based firm Baker Tilly was appointed auditor of the RSC for the year ending 31 December 2004. Annual membership subscriptions from 1 January 2005 were set as follows: Fellows and Members £93; Associate Members £56; and Affiliates £93. In introducing the motions to amend the by-laws, the president appointed Stanley Langer and Dr Josephine Tunney as tellers for the purpose of counting the proxy votes of those unable to be present (by-law 89). The following resolutions were carried: ● Resolution 7.0(a) – enables members of other groups of chemical scientists to join the RSC as Affiliates ● Resolution 7.0(b)i – provides Council with the flexibility to vary the date for removal of members for failure to pay annual subscriptions ● Resolution 7.0(b)ii – amendments to the by-law provisions for discipline of members to enable compliance with the Human Rights Act ● Resolution 7.0(b)iii – increases the maximum possible total of Honorary Fellows. In accepting the presidency, Dr Simon Campbell thanked Sir Harry for his tremendous successes in ensuring that government and other policy makers took account of the views of the RSC and for his enthusiasm in promoting the internet as a communication tool to support education and training. He presented Sir Harry with his past-president’s medal. Concluding the meeting, Prof Alwyn Davies formally thanked the many volunteers who had helped to put the RSC in a healthy position, all those who had given their time voluntarily (with particular reference to those whose efforts contributed to the success of RSC publications), the members of Council and its Boards, members of committees and of Local Sections at home and overseas, RSC representatives, Benevolent Fund volunteers, and the chief executive and his staff. ■i Full details of the accounts are shown in the Annual Record and Trustees’ Report, copies of which are available on request from Mike Graves, finance director, RSC Cambridge (address on page 16), email gravesm@rsc.org.
