Learning about science
Studying molecules in real time on
the “Molecular microscope” stand
THE ROYAL SOCIETY’S Summer Science
Exhibition featured three exhibits sponsored
by the RSC – “Stars ’r’ us”, “Molecular
microscope” and “Catch that molecule”
– and for the first time since 2001 opened
to the public during the evening, giving more
people the opportunity to view the best of
the UK’s science and technology research.
“Stars ’r’ us” looked at astrochemistry,
a new science that attempts to simulate,
in the laboratory, chemical reactions that
take place in space; on the “Molecular
microscope” stand, scientists from Farfield
Sensors demonstrated the novel optical
instrument they have developed to study
the structure of molecules in real time; and
chemists and physicists from the University
of Nottingham showed on the “Catch that
molecule” exhibit how they are working
together to make the world’s smallest test
tubes and provide containers to catch and
accommodate small numbers of molecules.

reorganisation of stock. Carol Megginson,
Ben Fund coordinator, explained:
“We have an excess of Christmas cards and
are therefore pleased to announce
a special offer to all our members.”
There is a large choice of card
designs (only three are illustrated
right), and orders will be
processed on a first-come,
first-served basis. The
Ben Fund has to ask
for a £2 contribution
towards postage and
packaging from members
requesting up to five packs,
each containing 10 cards
and envelopes. Those requiring
more than five packs should
contact the Ben Fund regarding
additional postage charges.
Any donations you
generously make will also
be gratefully received, added
