THEATRE

Theatre is offered at all of the secondary
campuses and five of the elementary
campuses. The others will be adding
theatre to their offerings.
Theatre is the fine art that combines all
of the four fine arts into one. Students
are given the opportunity to explore
human emotions and relationships
and develop a better understanding of
literature, history and language structure.
Through the technical aspects of theatre
students develop an understanding of
math and science and their practical
applications. All secondary Theatres
participate in festivals and UIL Contests
with excellent results.

Study in the arts is an essential means to
acquiring critical thinking skills, creativity,
the ability to change, and the facility to
teach oneself. The arts enable students
to express their feeling, communicate
thoughts explore their creativity, solve
problems, communicate ideas, develop
a sense of community, and appreciate
themselves as participants in history,
tradition, and culture. Learning in visual
arts, dance, music and theatre advances
and strengthens motor skills, promotes
considerate behavior, ability to work well
with others, self discipline, perception
and confidence. Fine Arts contributes to
the developmental process of the brain
and motivates students to excel in all
areas of their education.

Dance is a universal language, an
expressive and vibrant art with the
capacity to unify the physical, mental,
social, emotional, aesthetic, and
spiritual aspects of the human being.
Dance courses build dance knowledge
and skill in technique, improvisation,
choreography, artistic expression,
performance, history, culture and
connections to other curricular areas.
Dance is an important part of the fine
arts curriculum for girls and boys at
Southwest ISD. Many of the PE
programs on Elementary and Middle
School campus incorporate dance.
Southwest High School dance program is
designed for all students-those with
no prior experience and those with
previous training.
The Dragonfire Dance Team is a company
level advanced dance course. Students
must audition once a year to participate.
They perform at athletic games,
community events, competition and their
yearly Spring Show Recital.
Summer Fine
Arts Academy
Southwest ISD offers students 8-18 a
summer opportunity for an intensive
experience in visual arts, dance, music
and theatre culminating with two music
concerts, a musical play and a black box
play performances.

Every grade level on every campus
of Southwest ISD offers classes in
Visual Arts. Students learn at an ever
increasing level how to apply the seven
elements of visual arts; line, shape, form,
space, value, texture and color to the
four strands of perception, creative
expression, historical/cultural heritage,
and response/ evaluation.

The Music Department for Southwest
ISD consists of Band, Choir, Mariachi,
Orchestra, and Elementary Music.
Elementary Music is available at all but
one campus, with Band, Choir, and
Mariachi available at all secondary
campuses. Orchestra/Strings is offered
to students grades four through twelve
on Saturdays and as a class at the High
School. In addition to the Music Faculty
music tutors also provide instruction to
all secondary level Band and
Mariachi students.
Because of dedicated music staff
and strong support for the arts by
Southwest ISD, the students of the
Music Department have enjoyed great
success competing in UIL events, Festivals
and Parades. They are also invited to
perform at many community events. All
music students are given the
opportunity to perform in concerts given
on their campuses.
The Music Booster Organizations
have been an active part of the Music
programs and are a continued source of
support for students.
