Introduction
Welcome to Richmond upon Thames, this most
historic London borough.
In 1501, Henry VII named Richmond after his favourite
Yorkshire earldom. The gateway to his palace, also
favoured by Elizabeth I still remains on Richmond Green.
Richmond Bridge is the oldest London bridge across
the river Thames and the view from Richmond Hill
along the river is protected by an act of parliament.
Richmond Park, the favourite hunting grounds of
James 1 and his son Charles, still has large herds of red
and fallow deer roaming freely. The park is also home
to the internationally acclaimed Royal Ballet School.
Richmond is also home to the Rugby Football Union
headquarters at Twickenham, known throughout the
world as the heart of rugby.
Hampton Court Palace, Henry VIII’s favourite home,
with it’s 1000 rooms, formal gardens and world
famous maze is situated within the borough of
Richmond. Nearby Bushy Park is one of Richmond’s 3
royal parks, the other two being Home Park and
Richmond Park.
The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew contain 40,000
species of plants and 9000 trees. The national archive
is also based in Kew where the Public Record Office
holds 900 years of historical records including the
Domesday Book.
Along the river from Kew is Mortlake, the finishing
point of the annual University boat race.
Richmond upon Thames is the only London borough
that has the river Thames flowing through its heart
rather than forming a boundary.
As well as being a truly historic wonderland,
Richmond is also a modern thriving town with a
bustling town centre, theatres, numerous restaurants,
hotels, galleries and venues of all descriptions.
Richmond Register Office is a grade II listed building
and boasts the highest tree in the borough.
All in all Richmond offers the ideal location for a
wedding. Whether you want a low-key private
ceremony or a more elaborate affair, Richmond can
satisfy your needs. We have many licensed venues and
our own lovely Register Office to cater for your
individual needs.
Richmond
Richmond certificate to commemorate your day.
Legal Preliminaries
Civil Ceremonies
You can marry in any Register Office or Licensed Venue
of your choice anywhere in England or Wales. At a
Licensed Venue, Registrars from the local Register
Office will attend to conduct and register the ceremony.
The first thing you need to do is decide on a venue. You
then need to check the availability of the venue on the
date of your choice. If you want to marry at a Licensed
Venue you will also need to check with the local
Register Office to see if the Registrars are available. You
may need to be flexible over the time of your ceremony.
Once you have selected your venue and checked the
availability of the Registrars you need to ‘give notice’.
This is the term used for the legal preliminaries. Both
parties need to give notice, in person, in the Register
Office of the district in which they live. If either one of
you is subject to immigration control you must both
give your notices in a designated Register Office, this
may not be in your district of residence. Richmond is
not a designated Register Office. You must be resident
for at least seven days prior to giving notice. You can
attend together but you each need to give your details
individually. Your notices will be displayed on a notice
board in the Register Office for 15 days. You cannot
give any less notice than this. At the end of the notice
period the Superintendent Registrar will issue
authorities in respect of each notice. If you are
marrying in your own district the Superintendent
Registrar will keep your authorities with your
paperwork. If you are marrying outside your district
you will need to collect your authorities from your
local office and take them to the office that will be
dealing with your ceremony. You cannot be married
without this paperwork. Notice MUST be given at least
16 days before the date of the wedding.
You can give your notice up to a year in advance of the
day of the ceremony.
Notices are ‘venue specific’ - if you change your venue
you must each give fresh notices.
Religious Ceremonies
If you are marrying in a Church of England or Church
in Wales you will need to talk to the vicar, he/she will
advise you about what you need to do.
If you are marrying within any other denomination
you will need to give notice (see Civil Ceremonies) at
your local Register Office.
You first need to get permission from the minister or
governing body of the Church. Some Churches need
the attendance of a Registrar at each ceremony but
some have an ‘authorised person’ who acts in the role
of Registrar. If you need the attendance of a Registrar
you will need to book them as far in advance as
possible.
When you have given the notice and it has been
displayed on the board you will need to collect your
authorities from the Register Office and deliver them
to the Minister. He/she cannot marry you without
these documents.
5
Documents You
Need To Produce
When you attend the Register Office to give your notice
you will each need to bring the statutory fee (see p10).
You will also need to bring identification documents
and evidence of your nationality. The best document
for this is your passport. If you do not have a passport
you will need to bring your full birth certificate.
If you are subject to immigration control you may also
need a certificate of approval from the Home Office.
If you have changed your name by deed poll, change of
name deed or statutory declaration you will need to
bring it with you.
If you are a widow or widower you will need to bring
the death certificate of your late husband/wife.
If you have been divorced you will need to bring your
decree absolute.
If you were divorced outside the UK you will need to
bring your final divorce papers together with an
English translation.
If your last marriage was annulled we may also need to
see your decree nisi.
You must also produce two examples of evidence of
your address.
All the documents you bring must be original,
photocopies are not accepted.
A
Richmond Wedding
Whether you choose one of our many Licensed Venues
or 1 Spring Terrace, you can enhance your ceremony
with music, readings and personal vows.
We have a selection of music and readings available at
1 Spring Terrace but of course you may like to provide
your own.
A civil ceremony can contain no religious connotations
whatsoever and you will need to bear this in mind
when selecting your music and readings.
You will find a list of our Licensed Venues at the back
of this brochure.
1 Spring Terrace
1 Spring Terrace is set within half an acre of grounds
and is a grade two listed building. Our beautiful airconditioned
ceremony room in muted greens and
yellows is the ideal venue for a dignified intimate
ceremony. We can accommodate 40 people and have
beautiful fresh flowers which will enhance your
photographs and atmosphere. We have a comfortable
elegant waiting room with French doors that lead out
to our secluded garden, including the very private
‘secret garden’.
There is a large public car park just 70 yards from the
door and we have a paved front area ideal for ‘confetti
shots’ underneath the highest tree in Richmond. We
can also offer you an exclusive Richmond certificate to
commemorate your ceremony.
1 Spring Terrace Saturdays
We are delighted to offer enhanced ceremonies on
Saturdays. Each ceremony is afforded a longer time slot
relieving our couples of the feeling of ‘rush’. Brides can
make a separate entrance, on fathers’ arm perhaps,
couples can have extra readings and spend more time
taking photographs. Fees are paid in advance.
1 Spring Terrace Weekdays
All weekday Spring Terrace ceremonies will follow the
standard Spring Terrace format i.e Bride and Groom
enter the room together, one reading etc. Ceremonies
are set at 30 minute intervals.
1 Spring Terrace Sundays
We offer four ceremonies per day during June, July,
August and September. These ceremonies are very
popular so you need to book early.
6
Important
Information
If you are marrying at 1 Spring Terrace but giving
your notice elsewhere you must tell your local Registrar
that the venue is 1 Spring Terrace, Richmond not
Richmond Register Office!
Provisional Bookings
In Richmond you can make a provisional booking for
1 Spring Terrace or Licensed Venue by telephone, letter,
fax or e-mail.
We will then send you information and advise you to
give notice. We will keep the provisional booking for a
limited period. The booking is only confirmed when
you give your notices.
If you give your notices in another district they will
notify us and your booking will be confirmed.
If you do not give notice within the given period we
will cancel your booking.
This is not always the same in other Register Offices
and you may find you need to attend in person to
make a provisional booking, or give your notices
before you make a booking.
On The Day
Photo courtesy of Simon Lewis Photography
Whether you are marrying in a Licensed Venue or at 1
Spring Terrace you will need to see the Registrar prior
to the ceremony. The Registrar will check all your
details and make a note of any changes. (You may have
had a birthday, moved house or changed job since you
gave the notice). The Registrar will also ask for each of
your father’s full names and occupations.
If you are marrying at 1 Spring Terrace on a week day
you will also need to pay the statutory fee. For this
reason we ask you to arrive 15 minutes before the time
of your ceremony.
Whilst you are being interviewed your guests will
assemble in the ceremony room to await your arrival.
If you are marrying at a Licensed Venue your fees will
already have been paid. The Registrar will take this
opportunity to double check your ceremony format
such as confirming the names of your witnesses,
readers, readings etc.
7
Ceremony
The Superintendent Registrar will talk to you before
the ceremony to check your requirements.
You will each need to repeat the declaratory and
contracting words, which have been in use since 1837,
when the Registration Service began. These words are:
“I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful
impediment why I … may not be joined in matrimony to
…”
and
“I call upon these persons here present to witness that I
… do take thee … to be my lawful wedded
husband/wife”
There are shorter versions of these words available;
please ask the Superintendent Registrar for further details.
Music
Your music will be playing while your guests are being
seated and when you make your entrance, and again
when you are signing the register, taking photographs
and making your exit. For Spring Terrace ceremonies
your music will need to be contained on one single CD.
Rings
Photo courtesy of Simon Lewis Photography
You can elect to have your wedding ring(s) on a
cushion (at a Licensed Venue), presented by yourselves
or a member of your party. Please note: There is no ring
cushion at 1 Spring Terrace.
Vows/Readings
You can include personal vows to each other and also
invite a member of your party to give a reading (one
reading at 1 Spring Terrace (but see 1 Spring Terrace
Saturdays and Sundays) and up to three at a venue).
Remember that your reading can have no religious
connotations and cannot be from Khalil Gibran’s
‘The Prophet’.
Our optional vows/promises and a selection of readings
are at the end of this brochure.
Video
You can ask a member of your party to video your
entire ceremony from the moment you make your
entrance. The video will need to be entirely battery
operated and not require any extra lighting. We ask the
video operator to remain in one position throughout
the ceremony and not to move around the room, as
this can be distracting both to the bride and groom as
well as to the guests.
Confetti
We are quite happy with confetti and ask your guests to
throw the confetti at the front of the building rather
than in the garden, which we like to keep tidy for the
benefit of all our couples. Each Licenced Venue has its
own rules regarding confetti.
8
Photography
All photographs in 1 Spring Terrace are to be taken at
the end of the ceremony rather than during the
ceremony itself. We will give you plenty of time to take
all the photographs you want at the end of the ceremony.
Dress
There is no dress code for weddings and couples may
choose to wear the full white gowns and morning suits
or even shorts and tee shirts. Most couples however do
dress smartly for the ceremony, as do the Registrars.
Entrance
For 1 Spring Terrace ceremonies, bride and groom
enter the ceremony room together (but see 1 Spring
Terrace Saturdays). For Licensed Venue ceremonies the
bride can make a separate entrance, as well as being
“given away”.
Witnesses
You must provide two credible witnesses who must
both be able to speak and understand English although
English does not have to be their first language. They
can be relatives if you wish. The Registration staff
cannot act as witnesses nor can they provide witnesses
for you. You must arrange for your own witnesses.
Guests
The ceremony room in 1 Spring Terrace has a fire and
safety certificate for a maximum of 40 people and we
cannot exceed this. Please ensure your guests are
aware of this as we have the comfort and safety of your
guests uppermost in our minds at all times. With this
Photo courtesy of Desi Fontaine Studios
in mind we will have to ask extra guests to remain
outside the building as all our corridors and fire exits
must be kept clear at all times.
Commemorative Certificate
Here at Richmond we offer an exclusive marriage
certificate incorporating the Richmond coat of arms
and showing the bride and grooms names, the date
and place of the ceremony as well as the witnesses
names. If you would like a commemorative certificate
you must remember to include your witnesses
names with your request.
9
Fees
Fees for Licensed Venues and Spring Terrace Saturdays
and Sundays need to be paid in advance,
approximately 6 weeks before the ceremony. You can
do this in person or by post. If you are paying by
cheque you will need to send two separate cheques.
One for the ceremony and a separate cheque for your
certificate(s). If you are paying your fees in person you
may also pay by switch or debit card. Unfortunately
this is not possible for postal payments.
Fees for 1 Spring Terrace Monday to Friday ceremonies
are paid on the day of the ceremony either by cheque
or cash (see above Saturdays). Unfortunately we
cannot accept credit/debit cards on the day. All
cheques should be made payable to ‘The London
Borough of Richmond upon Thames’.
The information in this brochure is only intended as a
guide and not a full statement of the law. Please telephone
or email the Richmond Register Office for any advice.
Book well in advance to secure the date and time you
want. Remember you can book up to a year in advance.
You must give notice at least 16 days before the date of
the ceremony.
A notice of marriage is valid for one year from the date
it is given. You both have to give notice. If you live in
different districts you each have to attend your local
office. If either one of you is subject to immigration
control, you must both give notice at a designated
Register Office.
Make sure your documents are originals not photocopies.
Remember a civil ceremony can have no religious
connotations.
We welcome your comments so please feel free to give
us feedback.
We are constantly trying to improve our services and we
can only do this with your help. Don’t forget we are here
Readings
An Apache Indian Prayer
May the sun bring you new energy by day;
May the moon softly restore you by night,
May the rain wash away your worries
And the breeze blow new strength into your being.
All the days of your life may you walk gently
through the world and know its beauty.
Now you will feel no rain,
For each of you will be shelter for the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
For each of you will be warmth for the other.
Now there will be no more loneliness,
For each of you will be companion for the other.
Now you are two persons,
But there are three lives before you:
His life, her life, and your life together.
Go now to your dwelling place
To enter into the long days of your life together.
May beauty surround you both
In the journey ahead through all the years.
May happiness be your companion
To the place where the river meets the sun,
And may your days together
Be good and long upon this earth.
A Marriage, Mark Twain
A marriage makes of two fractional lives a whole,
It gives two purposeless lives a work,
and doubles the strength of each to perform it.
It gives to two questioning natures a reason for
living and something to live for.
It will give new gladness to the sunshine,
a new fragrance to the flowers, a new beauty to
the earth and a new mystery to life.
A Walled Garden
“Your marriage”, he said, “should have within it a secret
and protected place, open to you alone.
Imagine it to be a walled garden, entered by a door to
which only you have the key.
Within this garden you will cease to be a mother, father,
employee, homemaker or any other roles which you fulfil
in daily life.
Here you are yourselves, two people who love each other.
Here you can concentrate on one another’s needs”,
So take my hand and let us go back to our garden.
The time we spend together is not wasted but invested.
Invested in our future and the nurture of our love.
Extract from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
(The advice a father gives his daughter when she is
thinking about marriage) Louis de Berniere
Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like a volcano and
then it subsides. And when it subsides you have to make
a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have
so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you
should ever part. Because this is what love is.
Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not
the promulgation of promises of eternal passion, it is not
the desire to mate every second minute of the day. No,
don’t blush, I am telling you some truths. That is just
being ‘in love’ which any fool can do. Love itself is what
is left over when being ‘in love’ has burned away, and this
is both an art and a fortunate accident.
Your mother and I had it. We had roots that grew towards
each other underground, and when all the pretty
blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we
were one tree not two. But sometimes the petals fall away
and the roots have not entwined. Imagine giving up your
home and your people, only to discover that after six
months, a year, three years, that the trees have no roots
and have fallen over.
Imagine the desolation. Imagine the imprisonment.
After the Lunch,
Wendy Cope
On Waterloo Bridge, where we said our goodbyes,
The weather conditions bring tears to my eyes.
I wipe them away with a black woolly glove
And try not to notice I’ve fallen in love.
On Waterloo Bridge I am trying to think:
This is nothing. You’re high on charm and drink.
But the jukebox inside me is playing a song
That says something different and when was it wrong?
On Waterloo Bridge with the wind in my hair
I am tempted to skip. You’re a fool. I don’t care.
The head does it’s best but the heart is the boss –
I admit it before I am halfway across.
I carry your heart with me,
e. e. cummins
I carry your heart with me
(I carry it in my heart)
I am never without it
(anywhere I go you go, my dear;
and whatever is done by only me
is your doing, my darling)
I fear no fate
(for you are my fate, my sweet)
I want no world
(for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the sky of the sky of a
tree called life,
which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can
hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart.
I carry your heart
(I carry it in my heart)
The First Day, Christina Rossetti
I wish I could remember the first day,
first hour, first moment of your meeting me,
If bright or dim the season, it might be
summer or winter for aught I can say,
so unrecorded did it slip away.
So blind was I to see and foresee,
so dull to mark the budding of my tree
that would not blossom yet for many a May.
If only I could recollect it, such
a day of days! I let it come and go
as traceless as a thaw of bygone snow;
It seemed to mean so little, meant so much;
If only now I could recall that touch,
first touch of hand in hand – did one but know!
I knew that I had been touched by love
I knew that I had been touched by love the first
time that I saw you, and felt your warmth and
heard your laughter.
I knew that I had been touched by love when I was
hurting from something that happened, and you came
along and made the hurt go away.
I knew that I had been touched by love when I quit
making plans with my friends and starting Dreaming
dreams with you.
I knew that I had been touched by love when suddenly I
couldn’t make any decisions by myself any more, and I
had the strong desire to share everything with you.
I knew that I had been touched by love the first time we
spent alone together, and I knew that I wanted to stay
with you forever because - I had never felt this touched
by love.
Sonnet from the Portuguese,
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
my soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
for the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s most quiet
need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right,
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the fervour put to use
In my old griefs and with my childhood’s faith…
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose with my
lost youth,
I love thy breath, smiles, tears of all
my life – and if fate choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Sonnet 18, William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate;
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometimes too the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his golden complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines.
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade.
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou growest.
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see.
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Marriage joins two people in the circle of its
Love, Edmund O’Neill
Marriage is a commitment to life, the best that two
people can find and bring out in each other. It offers
opportunities for sharing and growth that no other
relationship can equal. It is a physical and an emotional
joining that is promised for a lifetime.
Within the circle of its love, marriage encompasses all of
life’s most important relationships. A wife and a
husband are each other’s best friend, confident, lover,
teacher, listener and critic.
Marriage understands and forgives the mistakes life is
unable to avoid. It encourages and nurtures new life,
new experiences and new ways of expressing a love that is
deeper than life.
When two people pledge their love and care for each
other in marriage, they create a spirit unique unto
themselves which binds them closer than any spoken or
written words. Marriage is a promise, a potential made in
the hearts of two people who love each other and takes a
lifetime to fulfil.
I Promise, Dorothy R. Colgan
I promise to give you the best of myself
And to ask no more than you can give.
I promise to respect you as your own person
and to realise that your needs are no less
important than my own.
I promise to share with you my time
and my attention and to bring joy,
strength and imagination to our relationship.
I promise to keep myself open to you,
to let you see through the window of my
world into my innermost fears and feelings,
secrets and dreams.
I promise to grow along with you,
to be willing to face changes in order
to keep our relationship alive and exciting.
I promise to love you in good times and in bad,
with all I have to give and all I feel inside
in the only way I know how,
completely and forever.
Flowers, Wendy Cope
Some men never think of it,
You did, you’d come along and say
you’d nearly bought me flowers,
but something had gone wrong,
the shop was closed or you had doubts -
The thoughts that minds like ours dream up incessantly,
you thought I might not want your flowers.
It made me smile and hug you then,
Now I can only smile.
But look, the flowers you nearly bought
Have lasted all this while!
Wedding Day
Now comes the knitting, the tying,
the entwining into one,
Mysterious involvement of two, whole separate people.
Into something altogether strange and changing,
new and lovely.
Nothing can ever be, we will never be, the same again.
Not merged into each other irrevocably, but rather
from now on we go the same way, in the same direction,
agreeing not to leave each other lonely, or discouraged, or
behind.
I will do my best to keep my promises to you and
keep you warm.
And we will make our bed beneath the bright and ragged
quilt of all the yesterdays that make us who we are.
The strengths and frailties we bring to this marriage are
the very things that will make us rich indeed.
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
and nodding by the fire, take down this book,
and slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
but one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
and loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
and paced upon the mountains overhead
and hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
