Help your child...
• Read smoothly. For example, you say "Your
reading should sound like talking. Listen how
I group these words as I read a sentence."
Search through the text for difficult words and
read them from left to right using three or more
syllables. Example: Miss-is-sipp-i
• Use clues from text to figure out unknown
words to help your child hold onto the meaning
of the word over time.
• Read sentences with a variety of punctuation
smoothly. For example, you say "Listen how I
slow down as I come to a comma." or "Listen
how my voice changes when I read a question
or exclamation point."
Your child and book understanding...

• Remember details of the story over several days.
• Understand bold, italics, or capital letters, etc...
means the word is important.
• Understand that sometimes the story is told from
different perspectives (first person, etc...).
• Understand real world issues that occur in books
and can make connections to their own lives.
Example: poverty, hunger, riots, etc...
